Climate Change In The Lumbee River Watershed And Potential Impacts On The Lumbee Tribe Of North Carolina, Ryan E. Emanuel
Climate Change In The Lumbee River Watershed And Potential Impacts On The Lumbee Tribe Of North Carolina, Ryan E. Emanuel
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
A growing body of research focuses on climate change and Indigenous peoples. However, relatively little of this work focuses on Native American tribes living in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States. The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is a large (60,000 member) Native American tribe located on the Coastal Plain in present day North Carolina (U.S.). The tribe has deep connections to the Lumbee River, which flows through a watershed dominated by extensive forested wetlands. In this paper, I outline key issues associated with climate change and water in the region, and I use long-term climatic and hydrologic …

Examining The Effect Of Perseverative Thinking On Physiological Activation In Response To Stress, Kathleen Kelly
Honors Theses
The current study had two aims: (1) measure changes in heart rate variability from the time of learning about a stressor task to completion of the task and (2) measuring the change in heart rate during and after the stressor task. Thirty participants were recruited from a midwestern university campus as well as surrounding communities. The study utilized a laboratory based stressor to examine the influence of perseverative thinking on stress recovery over a 24-hour period. Participants were involved in the study for a continuous 48 hours that included three lab visits. Participants’ activities and heart rates were measured through …
An Analysis Of Bilateral Tripart Hippocampal Volume And Its Relation To Spatial Processing In A Middle Childhood Sample, Emily Marler
An Analysis Of Bilateral Tripart Hippocampal Volume And Its Relation To Spatial Processing In A Middle Childhood Sample, Emily Marler
Honors Theses
Throughout the years, animal research has unearthed that certain cells in the hippocampus contribute to spatial processing, which involves an animal’s recognition of its environmental layout and directionality. In order to apply this work to human children, we will identify whether hippocampal volume is related to spatial processing, including identifying which section(s) of the hippocampus seem to be more related to processing layouts versus directionality. Based on previous literature (Goodrich-Hunsaker, Hunsaker, & Kenser, 2005; McHugh, Fillenz, Lowry, Rawlins, & Bannerman, 2010), we predicted there would be a relationship between bilateral posterior and middle hippocampal regions and spatial processing, such that …

17Β-Estradiol In Carbondale Treated Wastewater Effluent: A Cross Comparison Study, Evan Mcdermott
17Β-Estradiol In Carbondale Treated Wastewater Effluent: A Cross Comparison Study, Evan Mcdermott
Honors Theses
Natural estrogens are endocrine disrupting compounds and common pollutants in municipal wastewater. The concentration of 17β-estradiol was monitored in effluent from both the southeast and northwest Carbondale wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their receiving waters for nine weeks. The analysis was performed using gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS) and the internal standard estrone 3-methyl ether. Recoveries were 60.0±3.9%, and significant loss of analyte was found after storage greater than one week. The northwest effluent (NWE) had higher 17β-estradiol levels of 7.1-76.2ng/L than the southeast effluent (SEE) between Below Detection Limits (BDL)-54.0ng/L, which suggests 17β-estradiol was carried with colloidal organic …
It Is Always Worth It To Check It Again: Examining Nematodes Of Rodents From The Konza Prairie, Hailey Penticoff
It Is Always Worth It To Check It Again: Examining Nematodes Of Rodents From The Konza Prairie, Hailey Penticoff
Honors Theses
The Konza Prairie Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) is centered on the 3,487-hectare tallgrass Konza Prairie in eastern Kansas. The area supports 11 common species of rodents, some of which are reservoirs of zoonotic microparasites, including etiological agents for babesiosis and Lyme disease. Furthermore, each of the rodent species harbors an array of helminths. No baseline inventories of helminths or microparasites have yet been performed through the tallgrass prairie ecoregion. We captured rodents using Sherman traps, processed them via standard museum methods, and examined them for nematodes. Necropsies were completed on the same day of capture and nematodes collected were fixed …

The Impact Of Transnational Nonprofit Work On The Development Of Becoming A Global Citizen, Penny Bowser
The Impact Of Transnational Nonprofit Work On The Development Of Becoming A Global Citizen, Penny Bowser
Honors Theses
Global citizens dive into the culture of a country and adopt new ideology, customs, and traditions, while maintaining their own cultural identity. This paper explores how a nonprofit organization has the ability to provide the necessary resources for a volunteer to expand upon their global citizenry. Nonprofits were created for economic, historical, and professional reasons, then are divided into categories depending upon the goal of the organization. Volunteers choose to serve at nonprofits for social, personal, and professional reasons, but will all make an impact on the people they are serving, despite the reason. By volunteering with a transnational nonprofit …
Spontaneous Hair Cell Regeneration Is Prevented By Increased Notch Signaling In Supporting Cells, Melissa M. Mcgovern, Luyi Zhou, Michelle R. Randle, Brandon C Cox
Spontaneous Hair Cell Regeneration Is Prevented By Increased Notch Signaling In Supporting Cells, Melissa M. Mcgovern, Luyi Zhou, Michelle R. Randle, Brandon C Cox
Articles
During embryonic development, differentiation of cochlear progenitor cells into hair cells (HCs) or supporting cells (SCs) is partially controlled through Notch signaling. Many studies have shown that inhibition of Notch signaling allows SCs to convert into HCs in both normal and drug damaged neonatal mouse cochleae. This mechanism is also implicated during HC regeneration in non-mammalian vertebrates; however, the mechanism of spontaneous HC regeneration in the neonatal mouse cochlea is less understood. While inhibition of Notch signaling can force SCs to convert into HCs and increase the number of regenerated HCs, it is currently unknown whether this pathway is involved …

Exporting America: The U.S. Information Centers And German Reconstruction, James Podesva
Dissertations
This dissertation examines the establishment of United States Information Centers in West Germany immediately after the Second World War, and their role in securing the support of West German elites for American occupation policies, particularly democratic self-government. Located at the intersection of culture, economics, and American politics, the America Houses (Amerikahäuser) educated curious Germans about the United States, presenting a carefully curated vision of American life that minimized conflict and highlighted the material and cultural prosperity enjoyed by the mythical “average American.” The Americans contended that with the adoption of democracy and a reformed market economy, affluence was something West …
Machine-Insect Interface: Spatial Navigation Of A Mobile Robot By A Drosophila, Suddarsun Shivakumar
Machine-Insect Interface: Spatial Navigation Of A Mobile Robot By A Drosophila, Suddarsun Shivakumar
Theses
Machine-insect interfaces have been studied in detail in the past few decades. Animal-machine interfaces have been developed in various ways. In our study, we develop a machine-insect interface wherein an untethered fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) is tracked to remotely control a mobile robot. We develop the Active Omni-directional Treadmill (AOT) model, and integrate into the mobile robot to create the interface between the robot and the fruit fly. In this system, a fruit fly is allowed to walk on top of a transparent ball. As the fly tries to walk on the ball, we track the position of the fly …
Illuminating Dietary And Physiological Change In An Insectivorous Bat Community Exposed To Artificial Light At Night, Zachary Cravens
Illuminating Dietary And Physiological Change In An Insectivorous Bat Community Exposed To Artificial Light At Night, Zachary Cravens
Theses
Global light pollution is increasing worldwide, nearly doubling over the past 25 years, and the encroachment of artificial light into remaining dark areas threatens to disturb natural rhythms of wildlife species, such as bats. Artificial light impacts the behaviour of insectivorous bats in numerous ways, including changing foraging behaviour and altering prey selection. I conducted two manipulative field experiments to investigate effects of light pollution on prey selection in an insectivorous bat community. In the first experiment, I collected fecal samples from 6 species of insectivorous bats in naturally dark and artificially lit conditions and identified prey items using molecular …
Application Of Plant Based Edible Coatings For Maintaining Post Harvest Quality And Extending Shelf Life Of Strawberries, Rajiv Dhital
Application Of Plant Based Edible Coatings For Maintaining Post Harvest Quality And Extending Shelf Life Of Strawberries, Rajiv Dhital
Theses
Strawberries are a popular fruit with a pleasing color and flavor. However, its delicate tissue and high sugar content makes it highly perishable with visible mold. In this study, we have attempted to test feasibility of different edible coatings for extending shelf life of ‘Chandler’ strawberries subjected to simulated vibrations of local transportation. Six types of coatings were compared based on the quality of treated berries. Curcumin and limonene were used as natural antimicrobials and coatings were prepared from their liposomes and were over-coated with methyl cellulose. One set of each coating type were subjected to the simulated vibration of …

Effects Of Defusion And Deictic Frames Interactions On The Development Of Self-As-Context In Individuals With Disabilities, Sebastian Garcia-Zambrano
Theses
MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Ruth Anne Rehfeldt The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a defusion exercise in combination with perspective- taking interactions as a brief protocol based on the Relational Frame Theory (RFT). The protocol was designed to alter verbal statements about the self through the implementation of training on deictic frames (I-YOU, HERE-THERE, AND NOW-THEN) in conjunction with an exercise of defusion. A pre-post design with a control group was implemented to evaluate the effects of the protocol on the frequency rate of self-as-context and self-as-content statements. Adolescents with disabilities were selected and assigned to …
Interpreting Ritual In Ceramics Of Late Mississippian Southern Illinois, Alice Eileen Muntz
Interpreting Ritual In Ceramics Of Late Mississippian Southern Illinois, Alice Eileen Muntz
Theses
This research aims to understand whether and how ritual manifests in ceramic objects dating to the Late Mississippian Period (ca. late 1200s A.D. to A.D. 1500) in southern Illinois. The study focuses on ritual phenomena that occurred at two village sites: Millstone Bluff (11Pp3) and Dillow’s Ridge (11U635). Millstone Bluff has been interpreted as a site of public ritual and unusual symbolic importance evidenced by its general location and topography, spatial organization, and distinctive rock art. Though Dillow’s Ridge was the locale for an inordinate level of lithic tool production, in other ways the site is understood to be typical …
Altered Expression Of Metabolic Proteins Contributes To Neuropathological Disease, Chelsea M. Griffith
Altered Expression Of Metabolic Proteins Contributes To Neuropathological Disease, Chelsea M. Griffith
Dissertations
Recent epidemiological data have shown that metabolic disease is known to increase the propensity for developing cognitive decline and dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease (AD). While this interaction is not completely understood, clinical studies suggest that both hyper- and hypoinsulinemia are associated with an increased risk for developing AD. Indeed, insulin signaling is altered in post-mortem brain tissue from AD patients and insulin and treatments known to enhance insulin signaling, can improve cognitive function. Furthermore, clinical evidence has shown that AD patients and mouse models of AD often display alterations in peripheral metabolism. Since insulin is primarily derived from the periphery …

Convenient Death And Imperial Implications In R.L. Stevenson's 'The Suicide Club', Ethan Taylor Stephenson
Convenient Death And Imperial Implications In R.L. Stevenson's 'The Suicide Club', Ethan Taylor Stephenson
2018
This article argues through a biopolitical lens that R.L. Stevenson’s short-story cycle “The Suicide Club” anticipates the mass destruction of human life during WWI via the fictionalized case-study of London’s clandestine Suicide Club. In the heart of the British Empire, the Club facilitates suicidal desires in a perverse game of trading cash for dead bodies. When Prince Florizel of Bohemia, the quasi-protagonist, wages war on the Club, two competing sovereign games (sovereign in both the biopolitical sense of having power over the life and death of others and in the monarchical sense) clash in a conflict that enlists servile and …

Factors Causing Corn Yield Increases In The United States, Danielle Freelove
Factors Causing Corn Yield Increases In The United States, Danielle Freelove
Research Papers
Corn is a vital commodity in both production and the trade market. Being one of the most abundant crops grown in the United States, it is crucial that we understand what factors of corn production are most important. Most of the research found up until now is mainly on how weather affects the average corn yields. Looking at the other factors, like biotech acres planted, row width, and plant population per acre, give the public and farmers the knowledge they need to make important decisions about what they consume or grow. Since there is such a big debate on whether …

Illinois As A World Provider Of Virtual Water And Advocate For Clean Water: How Does Illinois Fit Into The Global Water Crisis/Solution?, Kara Lawrence
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
Although politically Illinois has recently been plagued with an extensive budget crisis and stalemate on how to overcome its large deficits, Illinois as a state is fortunate in its exceptional natural geography which provides both abundant fresh water resources and fertile agricultural soils (Lant, 2005). As such, Illinois plays an important role in the global water crisis as a water supplier through its exports of crops which consume vast quantities of water. The state is a leading exporter of corn, soybeans, and swine, and through these commodities is supplying what many experts call “virtual water” to the world. Virtual water …
Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin
Comparison Of New Metrics For Assessment Of Risks Of Occupational Noise, Wisam Al-Dayyeni, Jun Qin
Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts
Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common occupational related health problems worldwide. Exposure to excessive noise is the major avoidable cause of permanent hearing loss. The conventional metrics for noise evaluation cannot accurately assess the exposure risks to high-level complex noise, which commonly occurs in many industrial and military fields. Recently, we have developed two advanced models, an adaptive weighting (F-weighting) and a complex velocity level (CVL) auditory fatigue model, to evaluate the risks of occupational noise. In this study, we compared performances of five noise assessment metrics, including F-weighted sound pressure level (SPL) LFeq, CVL …

Performance Results Of Using Waste Vegetable Oil Based Biodiesel Fuel In A Turboshaft Gas Turboshaft Engine, Donald Bartlett 5218591, Blaine M. Heisner
Journal of Applied Sciences and Arts
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel product made from triglycerides with properties similar to petroleum-based fuel. It is blended with various petroleum fractions to produce automotive and transportation fuels and is not typically utilized as a standalone fuel. Biodiesel can be manufactured from various feedstock including straight vegetable oils (SVO), waste vegetable oils (WVO), and animal fats. Although most U.S. biodiesel is made from SVO, using WVO feedstock is a much cheaper option. As biodiesel fuel offers certain advantages over petroleum based fuels, the aviation industry has gradually advanced the use of the fuel in gas turbine engines. However, increased viscosity …

Increased Overwinter Mortalities Of White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) Fawns During A Drought Year, Marie I. Tosa, Matthew Thomas Springer, Clayton Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Mortality rates of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus (Zimmerman, 1780)) fawns have been quantified throughout North America. Few studies, however, have assessed cause-specific mortality of fawns after the first 3 months of life or during a severe weather event. During 2010-2014, we captured and radiotracked 93 fawns in southern and central Illinois and recorded 18 mortality events. In order of importance, survival rates were affected by days since capture, year of drought, age at capture, week post-capture (1/0 indicator), and region. Estimated overwinter (fall through spring) survival rate (± SE) of fawns in both regions during 2010-14 was 0.83 ± …
