Genetic Structure Of American Black Bears In The Desert Southwest Of North America, Dave P. Onorato, Eric C. Hellgren, Ronald A. Van Den Bussche, Diana L. Doan-Crider, J Raymond Skiles, Jr. Jun 2007

Genetic Structure Of American Black Bears In The Desert Southwest Of North America, Dave P. Onorato, Eric C. Hellgren, Ronald A. Van Den Bussche, Diana L. Doan-Crider, J Raymond Skiles, Jr.

Publications

Abstract American black bears (Ursus americanus) have recolonized parts of their former range in the Trans-Pecos region of western Texas after a >40-year absence. Assessment of genetic variation, structuring, gene flow, and dispersal among bear populations along the borderlands of Mexico and Texas is important to gain a better understanding of recolonization by large carnivores. We evaluated aspects of genetic diversity and gene flow for 6 sampling areas of black bears in southwestern North America using genotypic data from 7 microsatellite loci. Our results indicated that genetic diversity generally was high in the metapopulation of black bears in …

Space Use And Survival Of White-Tailed Deer In An Exurban Landscape, Daniel J. Storm, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf Jun 2007

Space Use And Survival Of White-Tailed Deer In An Exurban Landscape, Daniel J. Storm, Clayton K. Nielsen, Eric M. Schauber, Alan Woolf

Publications

Exurban development is nonmetropolitan, residential development characterized by a human population density and average property size intermediate between suburban and rural areas. Although growth in exurban areas is outpacing that of urban, suburban, or rural landscapes, studies of deer (Odocoileus spp.) ecology in exurban areas are nonexistent. During 2003–2005, we studied space use (i.e., seasonal home-range and core-area size and habitat use relative to human dwellings) and survival of 43 female white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) in an exurban setting near Carbondale, Illinois. Deer had larger home ranges than most suburban deer populations and generally smaller home ranges …

Production Of Trans-C18:1 And Conjugated Linoleic Acid Production By Ruminal Microbes In Continuous Culture Fermenters Fed Diets Containing Fish Oil And Sun Flower Oil With Decreasing Levels Of Forage, Amer Abughazaleh, B. N. Jacobson Jun 2007

Production Of Trans-C18:1 And Conjugated Linoleic Acid Production By Ruminal Microbes In Continuous Culture Fermenters Fed Diets Containing Fish Oil And Sun Flower Oil With Decreasing Levels Of Forage, Amer Abughazaleh, B. N. Jacobson

Peer-reviewed Articles

Previously, feeding fish oil (FO) and sunflower seeds to dairy cows resulted in the greatest increases in the concentrations of vaccenic acid (VA, t11 C18:1) and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in milk fat. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of forage level in diets containing FO and sunflower oil (SFO) on the production of trans C18:1 and CLA by mixed ruminal microbes. A dual-flow continuous culture system consisting of three fermenters was used in a 3 × 3 Latin-square design. Treatments consisted of (1) 75:25 forage:concentrate (HF); (2) 50:50 forage:concentrate (MF); and (3) 25:75 forage:concentrate (LF). …

Ethnobotanical Studies On Some Rare And Endemic Floristic Elements Of Eastern Ghats-Hill Ranges Of South East Asia, India, Dowlathabad Muralidhara Rao, Thammineni Pullaiah

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The Eastern Ghats, one of the nine Floristic Zones in India. Eastern Ghats are spread over three States of India, namely Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The hilly areas of Eastern Ghats in Andhra Pradesh are mainly inhabited by 33 aboriginal/tribal communities, who still practice the age old traditional medicines and their application. There are 62 different tribes, inhabited in Orissa. The inhabitants of the aboriginal tribal communities, who still practice the age old traditional medicines and their applications. The author undertook ethno medicobotanical studies in Eastern Ghats along with systematic survey. Many tribal people depending on naturally growing …

Testing A Mahalanobis Distance Model Of Black Bear Habitat Use In The Ouachita Mountains Of Oklahoma, Eric C. Hellgren, Sara L. Bales, Mark S. Gregory, David M. Leslie, Jr., Joseph D. Clark May 2007

Testing A Mahalanobis Distance Model Of Black Bear Habitat Use In The Ouachita Mountains Of Oklahoma, Eric C. Hellgren, Sara L. Bales, Mark S. Gregory, David M. Leslie, Jr., Joseph D. Clark

Publications

Regional wildlife–habitat models are commonly developed but rarely tested with truly independent data. We tested a published habitat model for black bears (Ursus americanus) with new data collected in a different site in the same ecological region (i.e., Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, USA). We used a Mahalanobis distance model developed from relocations of black bears in Arkansas to produce a map layer of Mahalanobis distances on a study area in neighboring Oklahoma. We tested this modeled map layer with relocations of black bears on the Oklahoma area. The distributions of relocations of female black bears were …

Spatial Selection And Inheritance: Applying Evolutionary Concepts To Population Dynamics In Heterogeneous Space., Eric M Schauber, Brett J Goodwin, Clive G Jones, Richard S Ostfeld May 2007

Spatial Selection And Inheritance: Applying Evolutionary Concepts To Population Dynamics In Heterogeneous Space., Eric M Schauber, Brett J Goodwin, Clive G Jones, Richard S Ostfeld

Publications

Organisms in highly suitable sites generally produce more offspring, and offspring can inherit this suitability by not dispersing far. This combination of spatial selection and spatial inheritance acts to bias the distribution of organisms toward suitable sites and thereby increase mean fitness (i.e., per capita population increase). Thus, population growth rates in heterogeneous space change over time by a process conceptually analogous to evolution by natural selection, opening avenues for theoretical cross-pollination between evolutionary biology and ecology. We operationally define spatial inheritance and spatial selective differential and then combine these two factors in a modification of the breeder's equation, derived …

Indirect Interactions Among Dendrophages: Porcupines Predispose Pinyon Pines To Bark Beetle Attack, Linda M. Ilse, Eric C. Hellgren Apr 2007

Indirect Interactions Among Dendrophages: Porcupines Predispose Pinyon Pines To Bark Beetle Attack, Linda M. Ilse, Eric C. Hellgren

Publications

Discerning linkages among trophic levels and untangling indirect interactions is essential to understanding structuring of communities and ecosystems. Indeed, indirect interactions among disparate taxa are often essential to the functional role of these species. The goal of this research was to test the hypothesis that the relationship between 2 dendrophagous taxa, the North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) and the pine engraver beetle (Ips hoppingi), is an asymmetric indirect interaction mediated by a common host. We proposed that damage by the porcupine predisposes the papershell pinyon pine (Pinus remota) to colonization by pine engraver beetles. …
