Effects Of Joint Space Use And Group Membership On Contact Rates Among White-Tailed Deer, Eric M. Schauber, Daniel J. Storm, Clayton K. Nielsen Feb 2007

Effects Of Joint Space Use And Group Membership On Contact Rates Among White-Tailed Deer, Eric M. Schauber, Daniel J. Storm, Clayton K. Nielsen

Publications

Establishment and spread of infectious diseases are controlled by the frequency of contacts among hosts. Although managers can estimate transmission coefficients from the relationship between disease prevalence and age or time, they may wish to quantify or compare contact rates before a disease is established or while it is at very low prevalence. Our objectives were to quantify direct and indirect contacts rates among white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and to compare these measures of contact rate with simpler measures of joint space use. We deployed Global Positioning System (GPS) collars on 23 deer near Carbondale, Illinois, USA, from …

Behavioral Indicators Of Predator Space Use: Studying Species Interactions Through The Behavior Of Predators, Kenneth A. Schmidt, Eric M. Schauber Jan 2007

Behavioral Indicators Of Predator Space Use: Studying Species Interactions Through The Behavior Of Predators, Kenneth A. Schmidt, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

Predation has major impacts on survival and reproductive success for many species. To quantify these effects, ecologists often choose to intensively study prey populations to measure predation rates and/or estimate predator abundance. But in some cases, predation rates are less strongly related to predator abundance per se than to spatial and temporal patterns of predator space use; thus, quantifying the latter may provide meaningful surrogates of predation rates that scale up to larger areas. This is particularly true when safety for prey, especially sessile and vulnerable prey, is strongly linked to predator-free space. Our own research programs have used two …

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington Jan 2007

Formulating The Triangle Of Doom, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Charles Goodwin, Alan Zemel, Gary Dunnington

Publications

Considerable attention has been paid in the CA literature to the glossing practices through which participants in conversation formulate who they are, what they are talking about, where the things they are talking about are located, and so forth. There are, of course, gestural glossing practices as well. For any concept or category presented gesturally, however, there is a range of possibilities from which a particular formulation may be adopted on any actual occasion of use. Identifying alternative formulations serves as a useful analytic exercise for exploring the pragmatic consequences of a produced gesture. In our own research, we have …

Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler Jan 2007

Comparative Fatty Acid Composition Of Eggs From White Bass Fed Live Food Or Commercial Feed, Ryan L. Lane, Christopher C. Kohler

Publications

We evaluated the influence of two broodstock feeding practices on fatty acid composition and viability of eggs in white bass Morone chrysops. The two dietary groups tested were (1) white bass females fed a commercially formulated feed (crude protein, 45%; crude fat, 16%) and (2) white bass females maintained on live food (fathead minnow Pimephales promelas and golden shiners Notemigonus crysoleucas). Significant differences existed between the dietary treatments in egg fatty acid levels. Eggs of white bass fed live food contained more 11-octadecenoic acid (18:1[n-7]), α-linolenic acid (18:3[n-3]), arachidonic acid (20:4[n-6]), docosahexaenoic acid (22:6[n-3]), and total n-3 fatty …

Phylogenetic Relationships And Ecological Speciation In The Mistletoe Tristerix (Loranthaceae): The Influence Of Pollinators, Dispersers, And Hosts, Amico C. Guillermo, Romina Vidal-Russel, Daniel L. Nickrent Jan 2007

Phylogenetic Relationships And Ecological Speciation In The Mistletoe Tristerix (Loranthaceae): The Influence Of Pollinators, Dispersers, And Hosts, Amico C. Guillermo, Romina Vidal-Russel, Daniel L. Nickrent

Publications

Phylogenies can provide valuable information on biotic and abiotic factors associated with speciation. We examined species relationships in Tristerix (Loranthaceae), a genus of 11 species with an Andean distribution from Colombia to Chile. A previous classification divided Tristerix into subgenera Tristerix (two species) and Metastachys (nine species). We tested this classification by generating a molecular phylogeny of the genus using nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS and chloroplast atpB-rbcL intergenic spacer and trnL-F regions. All partitions generally gave congruent trees, thus a combined analysis was conducted. Tristerix was composed of a northern clade (six species) and a southern clade (four species). Tristerix …

Piscicidal Plants Of Nepal: Checklist, Ethnobotanical Uses And Indigenous Practices, Ananda R. Joshi, Kunjani Joshi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Fish catching with the aid of plants and their parts is an ancient practice. The rural communities of Nepal collect piscicidal plants and their parts from various habitats, such as forest, scrub, grassland, cultivated fields, wetlands and riverbanks and use them following traditional methods and practices to stupefy fish. However, at present, the piscicidal plants and their ethenobotanical information are being eroded as a result of haphazard exploitation of resources, habitat destruction and land use change (Joshi and Joshi, 2005). The loss of traditional knowledge within cultures undergoing rapid change is just as irreversiable as the loss of species (Joshi …

Bala (Sida Cordifolia L.): Is It Safe Herbal Drug?, Amrit Pal Singh

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Bala is important medicinal plant of Ayurvedic system of medicine. Previous works have reported presence of ephedrine in Bala although it has not been reported in other varieties of Bala. Extracts of Sida cordifolia standardized to ephedrine are available in the Indian as well as international market. In western world ephedrine once upon a time was widely used for weight loss but recently it has been banned due to reported hepatotoxicity (injurious to the liver). Bala and its varieties including atibala (Sida rhombifolia L.) are exclusively used in Ayurvedic composite formulations. Owing to presence of ephedrine and norpesudoephedrine (PPA) …
