An Artificial Latrine Log For Swamp Rabbit Studies, Eric M. Schauber, Paul D. Scharine, Clayton K. Nielsen, Lyann Rubert
Publications
Managers use latrine surveys to monitor swamp rabbit (Sylvilagus aquaticus) populations but may miss rabbits in sites lacking suitable latrine logs. We tested artificial latrine logs in logless thickets in southern Illinois, USA, generally detecting swamp rabbits in fewer visits than by live-trapping. Artificial logs can aid swamp rabbit monitoring, especially in logless habitats.

Effects Of Sex, Age, And Season On Plasma Steroids In Free-Ranging Texas Horned Lizards (Phrynosoma Cornutum), Corina L. Wack, Stanley F. Fox, Eric C. Hellgren, Matthew P. Lovern
Publications
The Texas horned lizard (Phrynosoma cornutum) is protected in several states due to its apparently declining numbers; information on its physiology is therefore of interest from both comparative endocrine and applied perspectives. We collected blood samples from free-ranging P. cornutum in Oklahoma from April to September 2005, spanning their complete active period. We determined plasma concentrations of the steroids, progesterone (P), testosterone (T), and corticosterone (CORT) by radioimmunoassay following chromatographic separation and 17β-estradiol (E2) by direct radioimmunoassay. T concentrations in breeding males were significantly higher than in non-breeding males. P showed no significant seasonal variation within either sex. …

"What Are We Missing?" Usability’S Indexical Ground, Alan Zemel, Timothy Koschmann, Curtis Lebaron, Paul Feltovich
Publications
In this paper, we describe how usability provides the indexical ground upon which design work in a surgery is achieved. Indexical and deictic referential practices are used 1) to constitute participation frameworks and work sites in an instructional surgery and 2) to encode and manage participants’ differential access to the relevancies and background knowledge required for the achievement of a successful surgical outcome. As a site for both learning and work, the operating room afforded us the opportunity to examine how usability, which is a critical design consideration, can be used as a resource for learning in interaction. In our …

A Distributed System For Parallel Simulations, Mengxia Zhu, Nanda K. Yadav
A Distributed System For Parallel Simulations, Mengxia Zhu, Nanda K. Yadav
Computer Science Publications
We presented the technologies and algorithms to build a web-based visualization and steering system to monitor the dynamics of remote parallel simulations executed on a Linux Cluster. The polynomial time based algorithm to optimally utilize distributed computing resources over a network to achieve maximum frame-rate was also proposed. Keeping up with the advancements in modern web technologies, we have developed an Ajax-based web frontend which allows users to remotely access and control ongoing computations via a web browser facilitated by visual feedbacks in real-time. Experimental results are also given from sample runs mapped to distributed computing nodes and initiated by …
Soybean Genomics: Developments Through The Use Of Cultivar “Forrest”, David A. Lightfoot
Soybean Genomics: Developments Through The Use Of Cultivar “Forrest”, David A. Lightfoot
Articles
Legume crops are particularly important due to their ability to support symbiotic nitrogen fixation, a key to sustainable crop production and reduced carbon emissions. Soybean (Glycine max) has a special position as a major source of increased protein and oil production in the common grass-legume rotation. The cultivar “Forrest” has saved US growers billions of dollars in crop losses due to resistances programmed into the genome. Moreover, since Forrest grows well in the north-south transition zone, breeders have used this cultivar as a bridge between the southern and northern US gene pools. Investment in Forrest genomics resulted in the development …

In Silico Comparison Of Transcript Abundances During Arabidopsis Thaliana And Glycine Max Resistance To Fusarium Virguliforme, Jiazheng Yuan, Mengxia Zhu, David A. Lightfoot, M Javed Iqbal, Jack Y. Yang, Khalid Meksem
Articles
Background
Sudden death syndrome (SDS) of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) is an economically important disease, caused by the semi-biotrophic fungus Fusarium solani f. sp. glycines, recently renamed Fusarium virguliforme (Fv). Due to the complexity and length of the soybean-Fusarium interaction, the molecular mechanisms underlying plant resistance and susceptibility to the pathogen are not fully understood. F. virguliforme has a very wide host range for the ability to cause root rot and a very narrow host range for the ability to cause a leaf scorch. Arabidopsis thaliana is a host for many types of phytopathogens including bacteria, fungi, viruses and …

Multiple Captures Of White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus): Evidence For Social Structure?, George A. Feldhamer, Leslie B. Rodman, Timothy C. Carter, Eric M. Schauber
Multiple Captures Of White-Footed Mice (Peromyscus Leucopus): Evidence For Social Structure?, George A. Feldhamer, Leslie B. Rodman, Timothy C. Carter, Eric M. Schauber
Publications
Multiple captures (34 double, 6 triple) in standard Sherman live traps accounted for 6.3% of 1355 captures of Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mice) in forested habitat in southern Illinois, from Oct. 2004 through Oct. 2005. There was a significant positive relationship between both the number and the proportion of multiple captures and estimated monthly population size. Multiple captures were all intraspecific and occurred significantly more often from Nov. through Mar. when animals were not reproductively active, but this was confounded by seasonal changes in abundance. Age/gender distribution of animals in double captures did not differ from that expected from random pairing. …

Conservation And Management Plans For Angiopteris Evecta (Forst.) Hoffm. (Marattiaceae: Pteridophyta): An Endangered Species, Kamini Srivastava
Conservation And Management Plans For Angiopteris Evecta (Forst.) Hoffm. (Marattiaceae: Pteridophyta): An Endangered Species, Kamini Srivastava
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Angiopteris evecta, due to its rarity, is potentially a species of high value for fern enthusiasts. This is a threatened species which is included in the endangered categories in the ‘Red Data Book’ of International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. Since this species is also known to be of importance for its ethnomedicinal uses, this is a matter of great concern. If we do not think about its conservation and protection, this species could very well disappear from the face of this earth. For these reasons, the present paper deals with the habitat, cultural value and …

Ethnobotanical And Ethnomedicinal Survey Of Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, District Gondia (M.S.) India- Part I, D. K. Koche Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The purpose of this study was to document the indigenous folk knowledge of the inhabitants of the Nagzira Wild Life Sanctuary in eastern Maharashtra, a region of the Indian subcontinent long known for its extraordinary beauty and biodiversity. One important result of the survey that was conducted of the inhabitants of this rugged hill country is that it revealed a total of 70 different plant species having ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal uses. Taxonomically, the plants used by the villagers of this area were classified under 32 families of angiosperms.
Computational Monitoring And Steering Using Network-Optimized Visualization And Ajax Web Server, Mengxia Zhu, Qishi Wu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Computational Monitoring And Steering Using Network-Optimized Visualization And Ajax Web Server, Mengxia Zhu, Qishi Wu, Nageswara S.V. Rao
Computer Science Publications
We describe a system for computational monitoring and steering of an on-going computation or visualization on a remote host such as workstation or supercomputer. Unlike the conventional “launch-and-leave” batch computations, this system enables: (i) continuous monitoring of variables of an on-going remote computation using visualization tools, and (ii) interactive specification of chosen computational parameters to steer the computation. The visualization and control streams are supported over wide-area networks using transport protocols based on stochastic approximation methods to provide stable throughput. Using performance models for transport channels and visualization modules, we develop a visualization pipeline configuration solution that minimizes end-to-end delay …
Movement And Habitat Selection By Invasive Asian Carps In A Large River, Kelly L. Degrandchamp, James E. Garvey, Robert E. Colombo
Movement And Habitat Selection By Invasive Asian Carps In A Large River, Kelly L. Degrandchamp, James E. Garvey, Robert E. Colombo
Publications
We evaluated the habitat use and movements of 50 adult bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis and 50 silver carp H. molitrix by means of ultrasonic telemetry during spring–summer 2004 and 2005 to gain insight into the conditions that facilitate their establishment, persistence, and dispersal in the lower Illinois River (river kilometer 0–130). Movement and habitat use were monitored with stationary receivers and boat-mounted tracking. The relative availability of four macrohabitat categories (main channel, island side channel, channel border, and connected backwater) was quantified to determine selection; discriminant function analysis was used to evaluate changes in physical characteristics within each category. A …

Evolutionary Medicine Of Kani Tribal’S Botanical Knowledge In Agasthiayamalai Biosphere Reserve, South India, John De Britto, R. Mahesh
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Agasthiayamalai Biosphere Reserve in Tirunelveli zones have had five Kani tribal settlement surveys of ethnomedicinal utilization with more than 480 species of which only 70 species are been reported during the field study 2006-2007. Collected ancestral knowledge was documented in database format by the software Visual Basic 6.0 and M.S Access. Kani tribes reveal that they are capable of treating various diseases. Exploitation and documentation of traditional medicine is essential for the future. Such study will be useful to understand the role and importance of the tribal botanical knowledge in the conservation of medicinal plants of this area.
