Ecological surprises, substantial and unanticipated changes in the abundance of one or more species that result from previously unsuspected processes, are a common outcome of both experiments and observations in community and population ecology. Here, we give examples of such surprises along with the results of a survey of well-established field ecologists, most of whom have encountered one or more surprises over the course of their careers. Truly surprising results are common enough to require their consideration in any reasonable effort to characterize nature and manage natural resources. We classify surprises as dynamic-, pattern-, or intervention-based, and we speculate on …

Biological Activity Prediction Of An Ethno Medicinal Plant Cinnamomum Camphora Through Bio-Informatics, D. Abiya Chelliah Apr 2008

Biological Activity Prediction Of An Ethno Medicinal Plant Cinnamomum Camphora Through Bio-Informatics, D. Abiya Chelliah

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Having established that there is a market for a particular chemical substance and an opportunity for new or improved production, the action is necessary to put these ideas into practice in the field of its activity prediction. Biological Activity Spectrum (BAS) of a compound represents the complex of pharmacological effects, physiological & biochemical mechanisms of action, specific toxicity (mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, teratogenicity & embryotoxicity) which can be revealed in a compound's interaction with the biological system. Biological Activity Spectrum describes the intrinsic properties of the compound dependent on it's structural particularities. It may be revealed in experiment under any conditions (dosage, …

Floristic Inventory And Quantitative Vegetation Analysis Of Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest In Piranmalai Forest, Eastern Ghats, Tamil Nadu, India, C. Pitchairamu, K. Muthuchelian, N. Siva

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Tree diversity, species richness, basal area, population structure and distribution patterns were investigated in disturbed, moderately disturbed and undisturbed areas of the tropical dry deciduous forest of Piranmalai, Eastern Ghats in Tamil Nadu. The forest areas were selected based on the disturbance index. Six sites of 0.1 ha area were established in the Piranmalai forest. Two sites, Nehru park (N.P) and Foot hill (F.H), were located close to the mining, quarrying and human settlement area, while two other sites, Vannar iruppu (V.I) and Alaguchokkan (A.C), are located in a selective felling area, and two others, Dhargha area (D.A) and Veerappan …

How To Identify Rare And Endangered Ferns And Fern Allies, A. Benniamin, V. Irudayaraj, V. S. Manickam Mar 2008

How To Identify Rare And Endangered Ferns And Fern Allies, A. Benniamin, V. Irudayaraj, V. S. Manickam

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Identification of rare and endangered plant species is the first requirement for any conservation programme. The IUCN guideline is the only available method to identify the rare and endangered species and it requires vast data on the wild population of the target species. None of the biological characters, which are playing main role in the survival and distribution of several species, is used in IUCN guideline. In the meantime there are several difficulties in following IUCN guideline, particularly the non availability of complete field data. Moreover, the same guideline can not be used for all the groups of species in …

The aim of this investigation is to provide an overview of qualitative study of the earthquake affected area toward identification of environmental issues and sustainable development. The results of these studies suggest that Environmental issues and Sustainable Development concepts have often been ignored in relief, rehabilitation and development activities in the earthquake affected areas state of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. This study contributes to our current knowledge of disaster relocation literature and sustainable development of community. Hopefully, the information that is provided here will help guide policy makers, practitioners, and researchers in their applied and academic work and further the …
