Hydrophilic And Lipophilic Antioxidant Capacity And Content Of Phenolic Compounds In Fresh Khat Leaves (Catha Edulis Forsk.), Yakov Vinokur Et Al.
Hydrophilic And Lipophilic Antioxidant Capacity And Content Of Phenolic Compounds In Fresh Khat Leaves (Catha Edulis Forsk.), Yakov Vinokur Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Khat (Catha edulis Forsk.) is used in East Africa and Middle East as a mild stimulant and traditional remedy. At the same time, long-term use of khat may have adverse health effects. The stimulant action of the plant is related to the presence of amphetamine-like alkaloids, primarily cathinone. In addition, the khat leaves are rich in phytochemicals with health-promoting potential, such as polyphenols and ascorbic acid. In this work, the content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of hydrophilic and lipophilic fractions were investigated in fresh leaves and stems from two distinct genetic forms of khat (“red” and “green”). …

Intra-Specific Genetic Relationship Analyses Of Cinnamomum Trivancoricum Based On Gc-Ms Volatile Oil Markers, Muthiah Maridass
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Cinnamomum trivancoricum (Lauraceae) is an endemic species to India. The identification and genetic relationship of these species were studied based mainly on volatile oil constituents and their retention time. The color of essential oils was brown and the number of components of oils that were identified from Kodaiyar, Karaiyar, Thenmalai and Kodaikkanal samples were 22, 20, 19 and 18 which accounts 85.6%, 85.4%, 91.26% and 85% of their contents, respectively. Among them, terpinen-4-ol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, a-terpineol, and β-caryophyllene were the major compounds. A Dendrogram based on Jaccard’s similarity coefficients indicated that the distribution pattern of the four accessions was coherent with …

Mistletoes are familiar to most Europeans and North Americans because of the Christmas folklore associated with these parasitic flowering plants (33,116). Some may also know these plants are parasites of trees but do not realize that mistletoes are widespread, ecologically important components of forests worldwide. Although some mistletoe species are damaging pathogens, most do not impact economically valuable crops and forest products but actually play key roles in forest ecosystems. Particularly in Loranthaceae, coevolutionary relationships with birds (involving pollination and seed dispersal) have fueled several adaptive radiations, thus producing one of the most diverse and fascinating life forms on our …

Water Resources Management Under Competing Demands In The Walawe River Basin, Sri Lanka, Neelanga Weragala, Jagath J. Kaluarachchi
2008
Many developing countries depend on their agricultural production to ensure food security. However, along with agriculture, there are many other sectors that impose demands on basin water resources. Declining water supplies and growing demands require better management decisions in water allocation. This paper describes the current water demand and supply situation in a rural river basin of a developing country and analyzes several solutions to overcome the water allocation issues.

Qualitative Nature Of Some Traditional Crude Drugs Available In Commercial Markets Of Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, S. Ganesan, Roopam Y. Bhatt
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Medicinal plants have been used since ancient times for the treatment of human ailments. Interest in medicinal plants has been shown throughout the world because of the safe and effective constituents of plant products. The increasing demand for herbal medicines, both in the developing and developed countries, has provided the stimulus for the workers in this field to maintain the quality and purity of their herbal raw materials and finished products. The standardization problem relating to herbal drugs arises from the complex composition of drugs that are used in the form of whole plants, plant parts or extracts obtained there …

Swertia L. (Gentianaceae) In Nepal Himalaya: Checklist, Phytogeography, Ethnobotany And Conservation Status, Kunjani Joshi, Ananda Joshi
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Swertia L., a morphologically diverse but taxonomically distinct genus’s circumscription has often been debated. Four problems still need to be solved: species delimitation, section delimitation, and relation with allied genera and domestication of the species for economic benefits. In the present paper an attempt has been made to prepare a checklist of Swertia species, and documentation of distribution patterns, existing ethnobotanical uses and conservation practices in Nepal. Some integrated measures, which might help to fill up the gaps in our knowledge, are also recommended.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets
In the present study, the aqueous and alcoholic extract of Pithecellobium dulce leaves were evaluated for radical scavenging activity using reducing power assay method. Aqueous extract showed potent free radical scavenging activity, than alcohol extract. The observed activity could be due to higher phenolic content in the extracts (0.2171& 0.2042 mg/g in aqueous and alcohol extract respectively). HPTLC fingerprint profile of the ethanol and aqueous extracts were developed which would serve as reference standard for quality control of these extracts

Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Man has been using plants as a source of food, medicines and many other necessities of life since ancient times. Even to this day the primitive tribal societies that exist depend on the plant life in their surroundings. Though there were investigations of the edible economic values of the higher plants, especially the pteridophytes and angiosperms have been unfortunately ignored. The pteridophytes are used in Homoeopathic, Ayurvedic, Tribal and Unani medicines and provides food, insecticides and ornamentations.

Will Herbal-Paracetamol Combination Drug Prevent Both Liver And Kidney Disease? - Results And Possibilities, Anjali Sharma, Mukesh Makwana, H. S. Rathore
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
An attempt has been made to briefly review the existing information on herbal compounds which could combat acetaminophen (paracetamol) toxicity. A careful perusal of literature revealed that acetaminophen overdose not only damages liver but also the kidney. Nevertheless, the kidney was badly ignored in studies aimed at preventing paracetamol toxicity with herbal drugs. On account of such major neglect, so far no herbal-paracetamol combination could be made. Milk thistly is only well researched drug which appears as a suitable future candidate, but its action towards the kidney must be studied. The importance of such studies in the future is discussed.
