Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The study was carried out to investigate the central nervous system activity of Treculia africana. The central nervous system depressant properties of Treculia africana were determined using: Novelty –Induced Rearing and Grooming, Locomotor activity, Ketamine-induced sleeping time and effect on rectal body temperature. The crude extract produced decrease in rearing, grooming and locomotor activity. It also potentiated ketamineinduced sleeping time and produced hypothermic effect in mice. The crude extract possessed sedative effect, which may be through increase in the activity of GABA in the brain.

The Relational Determinants Of Legislative Success: Strong And Weak Ties Between Legislators, Justin H. Kirkland Jan 2010

The Relational Determinants Of Legislative Success: Strong And Weak Ties Between Legislators, Justin H. Kirkland

2010

In the repeated interactions of a legislative session, legislators develop working relationships that can be used in the pursuit of legislative goals. I develop a theory of influence diffusion across a legislative network of relations based on strategic actors building relationships in order to increase legislative success. Building on sociological theory initially developed by Granovetter, my research indicates that it is the weak ties between legislators that are the most useful in increasing legislative success. I test my theory using state legislative data from eight state legislatures, along with a second analysis of the US House of Representatives. Empirical analysis …

The Voter Is Only A Tweet Away Micro Blogging During The 2009 European Parliament Election Campaign In The Netherlands, Maurice Vergeer, Liesbeth Hermans, Steven Sams Jan 2010

The Voter Is Only A Tweet Away Micro Blogging During The 2009 European Parliament Election Campaign In The Netherlands, Maurice Vergeer, Liesbeth Hermans, Steven Sams

2010

In many western countries politics increasingly suffers from declining interest and declining participation in the political processes (Flickinger & Studlar, 2007). This not only applies to national politics but also, or even more so, to European politics. The European Union in particular is said to suffer from a severe democratic deficit (cf. van Os, Jankowski, & Vergeer, 2007). In general, support for the European Union is low: only a small majority (52%) supports its country’s EU membership (European Commission, 2009). This is reflected in the low voter turnout (43%) for the EP elections. The Netherlands, although its population supports the …

Laboratory Evaluation Of Two Bioenergetics Models For Brown Trout, Gregory Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward Jan 2010

Laboratory Evaluation Of Two Bioenergetics Models For Brown Trout, Gregory Whitledge, Przemyslaw G. Bajer, Robert S. Hayward

Publications

Laboratory growth and food consumption data for two size classes of brown trout Salmo trutta that experienced three distinct feeding regimes at two temperatures were used to evaluate the abilities of two bioenergetics models to predict fish growth. Accuracy of cumulative consumption predictions was also tested for one of the models. Model errors for predicting relative growth rate of individual fish were regressed on observed mean daily consumption rate to assess whether consumption-dependent prediction error commonly observed in bioenergetics models for other fish species was exhibited by the two brown trout bioenergetics models. Both models yielded unbiased estimates of brown …

The American Flag And The Body: How The Flag And The Body Create An American Meaning, Jennifer Marmo Jan 2010

The American Flag And The Body: How The Flag And The Body Create An American Meaning, Jennifer Marmo

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

“The most universally recognizable symbol of American government” is the American flag (Hopkins, 1991, p. 817). The American flag is vital to our nation and to its citizens, particularly as the flag remains a major symbol during the country’s times of peace and war. This paper explores the connections between the American flag and the corporeal body. A historical review of the creation of the American flag ignites the discussion of how Americans use their physical bodies to offer meanings of the American flag. From the presented taxonomy of meanings, an interpretation of the effect of the flag on the …

Publications

Recent advances in the statistical analysis of microsatellite data permit calculation of sex-specific dispersal rates through sex- and age-specific comparisons of genetic variation. This approach, developed for the analysis of data derived from co-dominant autosomal markers, should be applicable to a sex-specific marker such as mitochondrial DNA. To test this premise, we amplified a 449 bp control region DNA sequence from the mitochondrial genome of the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu), and estimated intra-class correlations among herds sampled from three Texas populations. Analyses on data partitioned by breeding group showed a clear signal of male-biased dispersal; sex-specific fixation indices associated with …

Building And Managing Political Consensus Through The Internet: A Projectual Model, Marco Artusi, Andrea Maurizzi Jan 2010

Building And Managing Political Consensus Through The Internet: A Projectual Model, Marco Artusi, Andrea Maurizzi

2010

This paper focuses on the digital applications in political communication and for building consensus, assuming that we need to overcome the idea of the Internet as a simple means of mass communication, and instead analyse it as a social medium for acquiring, activating, and involving people in a specific political idea or movement. The social developments under way in Internet networks are leading to an integration between reality and virtual reality, thus making the Internet an increasingly faithful representation of the real world and of different subjects’ social networks. This makes Internet a great opportunity for building consensus.

Informing A Transformative Multicultural Approach: Seeking A Content Form And A Medium For Illinois Indian Resources For Preservice Social Studies Teachers, Dan W. Hechenberger

Dissertations

The demographic imperative drives a fundamental tenet of multicultural education: We must more thoroughly acknowledge US diversity by incorporating authentic ethnic heritage in social studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate recommendations, from three levels of educators, on content form and medium for preservice social studies teachers in using resources for an ethnic minority relevant to the state of Illinois and US history, the Illinois Indians. I also explored how varied participant perspectives informed those recommendations and gave meaning to multicultural education via such content.

Research questions involved perceptions, attributes, and needs of preservice social studies teachers. Data …

An Evaluation Of Hibiscus Moscheutos Ssp. Lasiocarpos And Ipomoea Pandurata As Host Plants Of The Specialist Bee, Ptilothrix Bombiformis (Apoidea: Emphorini) And The Role Of Floral Scent Chemistry In Host-Selection., Melissa Diane Simpson Dec 2009

An Evaluation Of Hibiscus Moscheutos Ssp. Lasiocarpos And Ipomoea Pandurata As Host Plants Of The Specialist Bee, Ptilothrix Bombiformis (Apoidea: Emphorini) And The Role Of Floral Scent Chemistry In Host-Selection., Melissa Diane Simpson

Theses

Ptilothrix bombiformis (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) is a specialist bee belonging to the tribe Emphorini. The emphorine phylogeny suggests that Convolvulacea is the ancestral plant family and independent evolutionary host-switches to several unrelated plant families have occurred. The role of floral scent has been well-characterized in pollination systems involving moths, butterflies, bumblebees, and honeybees, but little is known about how specialist bees mediate host selection, or how host-choice evolved in specialist bees. This research investigates the role of floral scent in host selection by P. bombiformis. Ptilothrix bombiformis has traditionally been classified as a Hibiscus (Malvaceae) oligolege. My research shows that it …

Austral Autumn And Winter Seasonal Affects On Benthic Foraminiferal Communities: Bransfield And Northern Gerlache Straits, Laura Anne Bordelon Dec 2009

Austral Autumn And Winter Seasonal Affects On Benthic Foraminiferal Communities: Bransfield And Northern Gerlache Straits, Laura Anne Bordelon

Theses

The Southern Ocean has unique seasonal qualities due to the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) thermo-isolating the Antarctic continent. During summer months, surface primary productivity from algal blooms is very high. In the winter months, limited daylight hours (4 in winter) and formation of sea ice prevents sun light from reaching surface waters, therefore limiting productivity. The short seasons of productivity and long winters in Antarctica combined with seasonal changes in deep ocean temperatures, salinity, and fluxes of organic matter impact foraminiferal population dynamics. Fluctuations in surface primary productivity, as well as living foraminiferal assemblages have been documented around the Antarctica …

Fire History And Current Stand Structure Analysis Of A Midwestern Black Oak Sand Savanna, Cody Douglas Considine Dec 2009

Fire History And Current Stand Structure Analysis Of A Midwestern Black Oak Sand Savanna, Cody Douglas Considine

Theses

Management and restoration of black oak dominated sand savannas often rely on historic vegetative descriptions (settler accounts, surveyor notes, aerial photographs). It is commonly assumed that fire alone maintains savanna structure and composition, however little information is known about the specific fire frequency needed to maintain these systems. The objective of this study was to quantify and correlate characteristics of stand structure with fire history of the Kankakee Sands savannas in northeastern Illinois. Fire history chronologies were determined through dendrochronological methods from 289 dated fire scars identified on 58 black oak (Quercus velutina) trees located throughout four wooded sites. Tree …
