Saturated Lipid Sources In Feeds For Sunshine Bass: Alterations In Production Performance And Tissue Fatty Acid Composition, Jesse T. Trushenski

Publications

Feeds rich in saturated (SFAs) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) appear to maximize the retention of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in the fillets of sunshine bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis). To determine whether different sources of SFA and MUFA have equivalent effects on tissue fatty acid (FA) profile change, coconut (CO) and palm oils(PO) were evaluated as partial and complete substitutes for fish oil (FO) in feeds for juvenile sunshine bass. After 8 weeks of culture, the production performance of all groups was within the acceptable range for sunshine bass; however, …

Resisting Anti-Intellectualism And Promoting Legal Literacy, Leonard J. Long Oct 2009

Resisting Anti-Intellectualism And Promoting Legal Literacy, Leonard J. Long

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Professor Long urges everyone involved in legal education, including professors, lawyers, students, and judges, to ask just one question: Of what use is a law school education? Those involved with law school educations should strive to be intellectually curious and well-rounded in education, and not to maintain the narrow view of simply “training lawyers.” For the benefit of society, consumers of legal services, lawyers, and law firms, we must encourage the pursuit of legal literacy. Law students should be encouraged to explore American literature and traditions of Anglo-American law to facilitate their legal literacy and to become cultural elitists. Students …

Is It Time? Reform Of “Don’T Ask, Don’T Tell” And Article 125 Of The Uniform Code Of Military Justice, Levi Bennett

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

In 1993 Congress enacted a statutory ban on military service by open homosexuals. President Obama has pledged that this ban will be repealed. A variety of issues arise as a result of this planned repeal, including whether the presence of open homosexuals will have a negative impact on good order and discipline in military units. This Comment discusses these issues and argues that Congress should repeal the current ban and grant regulatory power over service by open homosexuals to the Department of Defense. This Comment also briefly discusses Article 125 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice penalizing sodomy, and …

Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling Sep 2009

Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling

Publications

Agonistic behavior is a common feature of larval amphibians inhabiting temporary ponds. Given the temporally staggered sequence of hatching by pond-breeding amphibians, ontogenetic patterns of aggression can influence coexistence if larvae of certain species or ages are subject to increased aggression. To determine whether aggression changes through larval ontogeny, we observed agonistic behavior of Ambystoma opacum, Ambystoma tigrinum, and Ambystoma maculatum at four stages of development spanning the larval period. We tracked aggression rates among individual larvae to determine whether previous success, in the form of increased aggression, facilitated success in subsequent contests. All species exhibited distinct ontogenetic …

Seed Germination, Foliar Vestiture And Stem Anatomical Features Of Urena Lobata L. (Malvaceae): An Ethnobotanical And/Or Ethnomedicinal Plant Genetic Resource In Nigeria, Gordian C. Obute, Tessy O. Nwaru

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The seed germination enhancement, foliar vestiture studies and stem anatomical features of Urena lobata L. were investigated against the backdrop of its ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal applications. Results show that the plant branches profusely thus yielding much of the vegetative parts used for various purposes. Germination of the seeds was enhanced by mechanical scarification and sulphuric acid treatments and the acid treatment elicited greater effects than the mechanical scarification. Leaf morphology especially the type and depth of lobes varied within the species while stellate and sharply pointed trichomes were observed on the abaxial and adaxial foliar surfaces. The possible roles of …
