Cradle To Grave: A Study Of Sustainable Food Practices In A University Setting, Ryan Babich, Sylvia Smith Mar 2010

Cradle To Grave: A Study Of Sustainable Food Practices In A University Setting, Ryan Babich, Sylvia Smith

Posters

The goal of this research was to understand the process of food service sustainability through a limited “cradle-to-grave” analysis of Southern Illinois University’s campus dining facilities. The process of researching the dining halls’ sustainability was broken into three separate stages: food mileage analysis, food waste analysis, and vermicomposting analysis.

The first stage examined the food mileage for each food item. Using a mileage calculator and a carbon footprint calculator, we were able to determine miles traveled and the amount of CO2 produced by the university. Results showed that the dining halls were 15.67% sustainable in its food purchasing process. The …

Phytochemical Screening Of Methanolic Extract And Antibacterial Activity Of Active Principles Of Hepatoprotective Herb, Eclipta Alba, Sunita Dalal, Sudhir K. Kataria, K. V. Sastry, Svs Rana

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Aerial parts of Eclipta alba are used traditionally for the treatment of several diseases of liver, skin and stomach. Methanolic extract and active principle compound of a well known Indian hepatoprotective herb, Eclipta alba was tested for in vitro antimicrobial studies. It was evaluated using zone of inhibition studies and minimum inhibitory concentration. The extract exhibited activity against all six strains studied. Phytochemical screening of the extract revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, coumestans, saponins and alkaloids etc. Ethylacetate fraction and further pure isolated wedelolactone showed enhanced antimicrobial activity. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhimurium were most susceptible. Shigella …

The Making Of The Supreme Court’S Free Exercise Clause Jurisprudence: Lessons From The Blackmun And Powell Papers In Bowen V. Roy, Paul E. Mcgreal

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Providing keen insight into the evolution of the Supreme Court’s free exercise clause jurisprudence, this Article picks up the behind-the-scenes story as the Court turned from Jensen v. Quaring to the case of Bowen v. Roy. The Article examines the Court’s decision making process in Bowen using unpublished correspondence and draft opinions from the papers of Justices Harry Blackmun and Lewis Powell. These materials show the justices’ concern with a possible slippery slope if religious believers were exempt from generally applicable laws and regulations. That common concern pulled the justices in different directions, fracturing the Court and leaving no majority …
