Teaching Social Skills As A Component To Reduce Problem Behavior In A Preschool: A Clinical Case Study, Kelly E. Scott

Research Papers

This study examined the efficacy of behavioral skills training (BST) to teach appropriate requesting and a differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) paired with a timeout procedure to decrease problem behavior of a 4-year-old typically developing boy who attended a local Pre-kindergarten half-day program. The participant engaged in problem behavior in the form of aggression, property destruction, and taking materials from peers. The BST program consisted of instruction, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback to increase appropriate requesting of materials and attention. The DRA procedure was implemented and combined with a 1-min timeout procedure. A fixed interval (FI) schedule was implemented. After …

An Assessment Of Cwa Section 303(D) Prioritization Of Impaired Water Bodies In Illinois, Daniel Jablonski

Theses

Water quality has been an issue of concern since the settlement of man and continues to be of great concern today in many locations around the world. In the United States, to address the issues of water pollution, the U.S. Congress passed the Clean Water Act (CWA) in 1972. This study examines the implementation and prioritization of impaired water bodies listed on the Illinois CWA section 303(d) list between 1992 and 2004. This study used the Delphi survey method to obtain opinions from water quality/management experts that reside in the state of Illinois. The goal of this study was to …

Serious Play: Evaluating The Comedic, Political And Religious Relationships Between The Daily Show, The Colbert Report And South Park, Noah Jerome Springer Aug 2011

Serious Play: Evaluating The Comedic, Political And Religious Relationships Between The Daily Show, The Colbert Report And South Park, Noah Jerome Springer

Theses

The goal of this paper is to create a framework through which the television programs The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and South Park can be evaluated collectively. The framework of "serious play" permits the analysis of the relationship between the three programs, specifically regarding their comedic, political and religious functions. This textual analysis proposes that when examined together through serious play, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and South Park are best visualized through a legal analogy which is supported by serious play.

Technology Development In Water Resource Management, Daniel J. Epstein, Larry E. Brazil, Gerald N. Day

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

In developed nations, technological advancements rapidly
are changing every aspect of our lives: how we work, how
we communicate with each other, and even how we are
entertained. The influence of technology is readily
apparent. The subtleties of technology and its less
apparent influences also are tremendous. Advances in
computer technology, communications, and manufacturing
are affecting all sectors, including engineering. In the
arena of water resources, technological advances have
helped to not only develop a better understanding of our
physical systems but have allowed improved operational
and institutional tools to be developed to support water
management. These advances have the …

From Scientific Knowledge To Policy About Climate Change In The Great Lakes: An Analysis Of Two-Mode Networks Of Co-Authored Documents, I-Chien Chen, Ken Frank, Youngmi Lee, Maria Lemos, Tingqiao Chen, Scott Everett Kalafatis, Henry Renee Jun 2011

From Scientific Knowledge To Policy About Climate Change In The Great Lakes: An Analysis Of Two-Mode Networks Of Co-Authored Documents, I-Chien Chen, Ken Frank, Youngmi Lee, Maria Lemos, Tingqiao Chen, Scott Everett Kalafatis, Henry Renee

2011

Recent work on the knowledge formation of climate change suggests that the set of ideas one holds to be true is influenced by the group of people who interacts with the same social contexts and by the views of authorities recognized by the group. From knowledge formation to political action, the mechanism not only depends upon participators' ability to integrate, but to cooperate with the public interests, policy makers, and other scientists of the verity of these claims.

This study explores how stakeholders in Great Lakes climate change access environmental knowledge in their networks and how that affects their decision-making. …

New Species Of Marsupial Frog (Hemiphractidae: Gastrotheca) From An Isolated Montane Forest In Southern Peru, Alessandro Catenazzi, Rudolf Von May Jun 2011

New Species Of Marsupial Frog (Hemiphractidae: Gastrotheca) From An Isolated Montane Forest In Southern Peru, Alessandro Catenazzi, Rudolf Von May

Publications

We describe a new species of marsupial frog (genus Gastrotheca) from an isolated patch of cloud forest in the upper reaches of the Pachachaca River, a tributary of the Apurimac River in southern Peru (Apurimac Region). The new species is small with males less than 30 mm and a single female 35.3 mm in snout–vent length. A juvenile was collected from inside an epiphytic bromeliad at ~3 m, suggesting that this species is arboreal or uses bromeliad tanks as microhabitats. We describe the advertisement call, which has a dominant frequency above 2.2 kHz. Based on morphology and advertisement call, …

Immigrant Non-Profit Organizations: How Do They Serve Their Constituencies?, Gustavo A. Amaya May 2011

Immigrant Non-Profit Organizations: How Do They Serve Their Constituencies?, Gustavo A. Amaya

Research Papers

Immigration has become one of the most important topics in the United States. According to the Census Bureau (2011), Hispanics are officially the largest minority group in the nation. This has a direct impact on new legislation and federal, state and local government decision making. The consequences of these actions directly influence the way public administrators do their job. To better understand the changes and its consequences, all these levels of government must understand the situation and all factors involved to the best of their capabilities. This research paper explores the services a group of Mexican immigrant non-profit organizations provide …

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper May 2011

The Integral Role Of Organizational Characteristics And Their Impact On Lean Implementation Success, John J. Cooper

Dissertations

ABSTRACT The increasingly competitive nature of the manufacturing industry has forced manufacturers to examine alternatives to traditional management philosophies. Although lean's success had been proven it was not uncommon for companies that opt to implement lean concepts to meet with mixed results and sometimes even outright failure. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between organizational characteristics and issues associated with lean implementation. The study identified the following organizational characteristics (a) organizational leadership, (b) organizational culture, and (c) organizational change and examined the role each played in lean implementation efforts. The study also looked at sixteen individual …

Frameworks For Estimating Virtual Water Flows Among U.S. States, Stanley T. Mubako May 2011

Frameworks For Estimating Virtual Water Flows Among U.S. States, Stanley T. Mubako

Dissertations

The United States is the world's top virtual water exporting nation, but not much is known about the country's internal virtual water flow patterns and the volumes involved. Previous studies have suggested that the import of virtual water, defined as the volume of water required to produce a commodity or service, can relieve pressure on a region's water resources. This study seeks to quantify virtual water flows among U.S. states using the water footprint and input-output analytical methods, and to compare the quantitative results to actual water use volumes in agriculture. The results showed an overall pattern where virtual water …

Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley May 2011

Analyzing Predator-Prey Models Using Systems Of Ordinary Linear Differential Equations, Lucas C. Pulley

Honors Theses

The main operating concern of all species in any ecosystem or natural environment is rooted in the battle for survival.  This constant battle for survival is most highlighted in the two main modes of species interaction; categorized as predation or competition.  This research focused on applying biological mathematics to analyzing predation relationships, especially the relationship between the Canadian Lynx and the Snowshoe Hare.  This predation relationship is quite special, because these species interact in a relatively isolated manner compared to others, meaning their populations fluctuated in a regular cycle.  These population fluctuations can be defined and analyzed mathematically using systems …

Characterization Of Two Distinct Hfq Genes In Burkholderia Cenocepacia Hi2424, Samantha Sue Sellers May 2011

Characterization Of Two Distinct Hfq Genes In Burkholderia Cenocepacia Hi2424, Samantha Sue Sellers

Theses

Species in the genus Burkholderia are found in a wide variety of environments ranging from plant rhizospheres to the human respiratory tract. Even though they have great biotechnological and bioremediative potential in preventing some plant diseases, promoting crop production, and degrading toxic compounds, some species of Burkholderia can be serious pathogens to those who have compromised immune systems, particularly those with Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Many Burkholderia species have two distinct copies of the hfq gene, a rare phenomenon in bacteria studied to date. As a global regulatory protein, Hfq has been shown to act as an RNA chaperone involved in …

A Comparison Of Native And Colonial American Conceptions Of Self: Implications For Competing World-Views, Marjorie R. Cavey May 2011

A Comparison Of Native And Colonial American Conceptions Of Self: Implications For Competing World-Views, Marjorie R. Cavey

Theses

Native and Colonial Americans had vastly different approaches to the world, and viewed nature and other people in quite dissimilar ways. The concept of self is central to this project because personal values and attitudes toward others are grounded in agency - actions that emerge from the self and define the way that one treats his or her surroundings and everyone or thing in it. The way that one's self is perceived is necessarily communicated within the context of social settings. Situation in a world of other people (and of nature) requires that actions be weighed in accordance with agency. …

Quantifying And Manipulating Spatiotemporal Trends In Rodent Space Use And Consumption Rates On Incidentally Encountered Prey, Tyler Evan Schartel May 2011

Quantifying And Manipulating Spatiotemporal Trends In Rodent Space Use And Consumption Rates On Incidentally Encountered Prey, Tyler Evan Schartel

Theses

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity in predator activity can generate and influence the availability of refugia to prey. In eastern forests, white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and eastern chipmunks (Tamias striatus) are abundant generalist rodents, and large-scale removal experiments have confirmed they are important predators of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) pupae and songbird nests and eggs. Models predict the extinction of gypsy moth populations when confronted with abundant mouse populations, but small-scale (10s of m) heterogeneity in rodent activity may allow for the persistence of moth populations. I quantified the magnitude, variability, temporal persistence, and spatial structure of white-footed mouse and eastern chipmunk activity, …

Framing Climate Change: A Comparing Analysis Of Chinese And American Elite Newspaper’S Coverage On Climate Change During 2009 Copenhagen Summit, Zixian Gao

Research Papers

Climate change is a global issue not only about the natural environment but also international political relations. Different countries have different perspectives on mitigating climate change. The Copenhagen Summit provides a chance for studying different countries’ standpoint on climate change. This current paper did a framing study of the news reports about climate change on an elite Chinese newspaper and an elite U.S. newspaper and their view on each country. The results revealed that both the People’s Daily and the New York Times tent to cover politics and economics more than other social contexts. Renewable energy was also often discussed. …

Attitudes Of Spouses Toward Job And Family Responsibilities Of Professionals In The Agricultural Education And Communications Profession, Adrienne M. Jackson Gulley Ms

Research Papers

The field of education, specifically the profession of teaching, is one of the most visible and underappreciated professions practiced today. Though improvements with recognition towards teachers have increased over time, the demands and expectations of teachers have also increased.  In the growing profession of agriculture, the demands and challenges of an agriculture teacher bring both positive and negative outcomes in the life of an individual.  The purpose of this study was to determine the job satisfaction of spouses toward job and family responsibilities of individuals in leadership positions within agricultural education and communications. This study was significant because it analyzed …

Research Papers

Video games have been used as marketing tools from the early beginnings of the media. In this research paper, I briefly examine some of examples throughout the years of how this was introduced and its effectiveness. Therefore, this document seeks to answer how a free video game might function as a marketing tool for student recruitment and retention while also re-connecting alumni to their own memories of SIUC campus life. The creation, production, marketing, and impact of the game SIU Campus Life Pinball are thoroughly examined. The results include the unpredictable nature and impact of modern day social networking
