My research project focuses on change in journalistic practices in the age of global networked technologies. I have collected background information on the history of journalism and how it has evolved through the years. My goal for this project was to develop a unique website about new media …

Time-Out Punishment Of Long Pauses On Fixed-Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Adam Derenne, Alan Baron Apr 2011

Time-Out Punishment Of Long Pauses On Fixed-Ratio Schedules Of Reinforcement, Adam Derenne, Alan Baron

The Psychological Record

Although pre-ratio pausing is a characteristic feature of fixed
ratio (FR) schedules of reinforcement, pausing reduces the rate at
which reinforcement is earned. To determine whether FR pausing
can be altered, 7 rats were studied with procedures in which long
pauses were punished with time-out from reinforcement. A general
finding was that pausing is modifiable. However, tendencies to pause
were highly resistant to change, and for some animals under some
conditions efforts to reduce pausing were unsuccessful. Moreover,
despite the fact that reduced pausing was accompanied by increased
reinforcement rates, long pauses resumed when the punishment
contingency was removed. Two …

Narrative Delay And The Nature Of Love In The Short Film, Come, Walter C. Metz Apr 2011

Narrative Delay And The Nature Of Love In The Short Film, Come, Walter C. Metz

Publications

By showing teenagers falling in love, and then cutting to the loving couple, now elderly, the short film, Come brilliantly uses the excision of the narrative tradition of delay in order to revolutionize the cinema's presentation of love in theoretical synchronicity with Irving Singer's philosophical study, The Nature of Love.

Habitat Selection By Critically Endangered Florida Panthers Across The Diel Period: Implications For Land Management And Conservation, Dave P. Onorato, Marc Criffield, Mark Lotz, Mark Cunningham, Roy Mcbride, Erin H. Leone, Oron L. Bass Jr., Eric C. Hellgren Apr 2011

Habitat Selection By Critically Endangered Florida Panthers Across The Diel Period: Implications For Land Management And Conservation, Dave P. Onorato, Marc Criffield, Mark Lotz, Mark Cunningham, Roy Mcbride, Erin H. Leone, Oron L. Bass Jr., Eric C. Hellgren

Publications

Decisions regarding landscape management, restoration, and land acquisition typically depend on land managers’ interpretation of how wildlife selects habitat. Such assessments are particularly important for umbrella species like the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi), whose survival requires vast wildlands. Some interpretations of habitat selection by panthers have been criticized for using only morning locations in defining habitat use. We assessed habitat selection using a Euclidean distance analysis (EDA) and location data collected throughout the diel period from GPS collars deployed on 20 independent Florida panthers. We corroborated aspects of earlier analyses by demonstrating selection of forested habitats …

Is Sexual Monomorphism A Predictor Of Polygynandry? Evidence From A Social Mammal, The Collared Peccary, Jennifer Daniel Cooper, Peter M. Waser, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy M. Gabor, J. A. Dewoody Apr 2011

Is Sexual Monomorphism A Predictor Of Polygynandry? Evidence From A Social Mammal, The Collared Peccary, Jennifer Daniel Cooper, Peter M. Waser, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy M. Gabor, J. A. Dewoody

Publications

Sexual dimorphism is common in polygynous species, and there is clear evidence that both intra-sexual competition and female preferences can drive the evolution of large body size in males. In contrast, sexual monomorphism is often argued to reflect a relaxation of male mate competition or an intensification of resource competition among females. Alternatively, it might imply opportunities for females to circumvent or counteract male mate competition in a polygynandrous mating system. We test the prediction that sexual monorphism is associated with polygynandry in the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu, Tayassuidae), a social ungulate closely related to the old-world suids. …

In Search Of A Third Culture: Towards An Experimental Science And Nature Cinema, Walter C. Metz Apr 2011

In Search Of A Third Culture: Towards An Experimental Science And Nature Cinema, Walter C. Metz

Publications

This essay attempts to move beyond C.P. Snow’s reductive formulation of the two cultures, positing a third culture forged out of the collision of science documentary television with the avant-garde traditions of the cinema. In particular, I use both scientific and humanistic understandings of memory to compare and contrast a science television program, “Understanding the Mysteries of Memory” (Science Channel, 2002) with an avant-garde film, Report (Bruce Conner, 1967).

Fashimia – Combating Negative Female Self - Image Through Online Community, Dar`Ya Bondareva

Research Papers

The present study aimed to investigate the power and influence of fashion

magazines on Caucasian teenaged girls, aged 13 to 18 years old. Strong negative

associations were found between exposure to fashion magazines and teenage girls`

perceptions of their bodies. Furthermore, the present research studied teenagers online

activities and behavior in order to support the statement that the best way to reach

teenage girls in digital era is through online community. The lack of websites and

magazines that promote positive and healthy body image reinforced the need for

creation of an online community targeted at “plus size” teenaged girls aged …

Employment And Disability: Debugging The Myth Of Employment And Loss Of Benefits., Matthew Fred Mar 2011

Employment And Disability: Debugging The Myth Of Employment And Loss Of Benefits., Matthew Fred

Research Papers

In the United States those with disabilities have few options for support outside of family and friends.  For most persons with disabilities this support comes in the form of either Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) provided through the Social Security Administration (SSA).  Throughout the years qualifying for these benefits has become a labor intensive process.  During this process a person must demonstrate an inability to work under a definition that nearly requires a complete incapacity of the individual.  This difficulty in qualifying has resulted in a long held belief among recipients that if one returns …

Control Of Impulsive Choice Through Biasing Instructions, Douglas J. Navarick Mar 2011

Control Of Impulsive Choice Through Biasing Instructions, Douglas J. Navarick

The Psychological Record

College students repeatedly chose between an immediate,
small reinforcer (viewing animated cartoons for 15 s then waiting
75 s before the next trial) and a delayed, large reinforcer (a delay
of 55 s, then a viewing period of 25 s, followed by 10 s of waiting).
Participants were classified as impulsive if, in Session 1, they
chose the immediate, small reinforcer on at least 70% of trials, or
as self-controlled if they chose it on 30% or less. In Session 2,
informing impulsive participants about how much viewing time
each schedule offered reduced but did not eliminate impulsive
responding . …
