Rural Community Perspectives On Preparedness And Adaptation To Climate-Change And Demographic Pressure, Laura Mayagoitia, Brian Hurd, Jose Rivera, Steve Guldan
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
This study investigates local-scale adaptation and long-run capacity building in acequia communities in Northern New Mexico, where there is a long record of resilience and adaptive capacity spanning more than four centuries. These communities may be particularly vulnerable to current stresses from population growth, changing community composition, and projections of water scarcity that are expected to accompany long-run climatic changes. This paper uses a survey approach to explore factors and community characteristics that contribute to community adaptation, the level and extent of community preparedness, and the preferred community actions to cope with stresses and disturbances. Key findings suggest that land …
Directed Forgetting: Short-Term Memory Or Conditioned Response?, Wendy S. Miller, Harvard L. Armus
Directed Forgetting: Short-Term Memory Or Conditioned Response?, Wendy S. Miller, Harvard L. Armus
The Psychological Record
Previous researchers have interpreted the phenomenon of directed forgetting in terms of animal short-term memory and rehearsal. An alternative explanation-that directed forgetting is attributable to the response or nonresponse to a sequence of stimuli-is proposed and tested with rats. Rats were tested for directed forgetting using a variation of the standard directed forgetting task, in which the sample was followed by either a remember cue or a forget cue, and in which there was a second cue immediately before the presentation of the comparison stimuli. Results appear to support the memory and rehearsal explanation of directed forgetting.

Practical Applications Of Emerging Online Business Models: Developing A Digital Comic Book Prototype, Jason D. Allen
Practical Applications Of Emerging Online Business Models: Developing A Digital Comic Book Prototype, Jason D. Allen
Research Papers
Advancing online technologies have traditional legacy media scrambling to generate consistent revenue streams in the digital space. Even though online and mobile technologies encourage publishers to develop new content for the web there are inherent challenges to adapting tactile non digital formats into ones and zeros. Furthermore, the digital space has yet to define a specific business model applicable for all online media. Presenting current trends in digital publishing of comic books as well as traditional media, this document defines emerging online business models and case examples of consumer purchase incentives. The defined business models and literature provide a guided …

Pbs And The Young Adult Viewer, Tamara Cherisse John
Research Papers
Attracting and retaining teenage and young adult viewers has been a major challenge for most broadcasters. This study evaluates the perception of the U.S. Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) among young adults between the ages of 18 and 35. The objectives of this study were to examine whether or not PBS appeals to young adults between the ages of 18 and 35, the perception of the young adult viewer by media managers within a local PBS station, and to study efforts made locally and nationally to reach young adult viewers. A survey of 180 participants and interviews with five media managers …

We present the first reconstruction of the parasitoses among the people of the Loma San Gabriel culture, as represented by 36 coprolites excavated from the Cueva de los Muertos Chiquitos in Durango, Mexico. The coprolites date to approximately 1,400-yr-ago. Species identified based on eggs recovered include the trematode Echinostoma sp., the tapeworms Hymenolepis sp. and Dipylidium caninum, and the nematodes Ancylostoma duodenale, Enterobius vermicularis, and Trichuris trichiura. After rehydration and screening, 2 methods were used to recover eggs from these samples including spontaneous sedimentation and flotation. Samples were analyzed by 3 different laboratories for independent verification …
Experimental Tree Removal In Tallgrass Prairie: Variable Responses Of Flora And Fauna Along A Woody Cover Gradient, Aaron L. Alford, Eric C. Hellgren, Ryan Limb, David M. Engle
Experimental Tree Removal In Tallgrass Prairie: Variable Responses Of Flora And Fauna Along A Woody Cover Gradient, Aaron L. Alford, Eric C. Hellgren, Ryan Limb, David M. Engle

Woody plant encroachment is a worldwide phenomenon in grassland and savanna systems whose consequence is often the development of an alternate woodland state. Theoretically, an alternate state may be associated with changes in system state variables (e. g., species composition) or abiotic parameter shifts (e. g., nutrient availability). When state-variable changes are cumulative, such as in woody plant encroachment, the probability of parameter shifts increases as system feedbacks intensify over time. Using a Before-After Control-Impact (BACI) design, we studied eight pairs of grassland sites undergoing various levels of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) encroachment to determine whether responses of flora and …

Abstract
This paper analyzes the relationship between the theatrical and filmic work of Woody Allen. I begin with an assessment of Mighty Aphrodite’s literal use of the ancient Greek stage. I use this prologue as a frame for developing an intertextual reading of Annie Hall (1977) using George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion (1913). I conclude with a set of reflections that allow the theatrical to be used as a frame for understanding Woody Allen’s films more generally, with a brief case study of Deconstructing Harry (1997).

Vertical Integration For Long-Term Sustainability In The Dairy Industry, Bethany L. Gilles
Vertical Integration For Long-Term Sustainability In The Dairy Industry, Bethany L. Gilles
Research Papers
The purpose of this study is to determine and analyze whether it is feasible for a milk processing facility to vertically integrate by establishing a dairy farm, and to determine the relationships of production variables to milk production costs. The results of this study will be used to help aid in working towards reducing the consumer’s retail price for milk by utilizing a vertical integration strategy that involves the direct ownership of a dairy farm by a milk processing plant. Data utilized in this study was taken from the United States Department of Agriculture statistics from the years between 2000-2011, …
Integration Of Technology Into The Classroom: Effects On Reading Comprehension, Susan C. Stearns
Integration Of Technology Into The Classroom: Effects On Reading Comprehension, Susan C. Stearns
Research Papers
Reading comprehension is critical to understanding written communication. Even when students are able to recognize words and fluently read text, they my not comprehend what is read. Learning to comprehend text is critical for students to be successful in school and future careers. As new technologies emerge, there is a push to integrate technology into the classroom to promote academic success among students. Furthermore, the No Child Left Behind Act mandates the use of technology in the classroom. This research review investigated peer-reviewed studies comparing the effects of computer technology as a supplemental tool to support and improve the reading …

This commentary focuses on the importance that DNA sequence analysis has in biodiversity studies and the need for improving administrative procedures regarding biodiversity research in Peru. Given the rapid loss of biodiversity and natural resources in many areas of Peru, research aimed at identifying, characterizing, and describing biodiversity is a priority for developing appropriate conservation and mitigation strategies. For current and future research on Peruvian biodiversity and conservation, we emphasize the importance of using an integrative taxonomy approach, including the study of evolutionary processes associated with areas of high biodiversity and endemism. Additionally, it is essential that governmental institutions responsible …

Drought affects soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and other crops productivity in the US and other parts of the world. Relative water content (RWC) is an important indicator for plant water deficit tolerance (WDT). The objective of this study is to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for RWC and several other leaf traits such as leaf dry weight (LDW), leaf fresh weight (LFW), and leaf turgid weight (LTW) in two soybean recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, one derived from a cross of ‘Essex’ and ‘Forrest’ (ExF, n=94) and the other is derived from a cross of ‘PI 438489B’ and …
