Evaluation Of Δd And Δ18o As Natural Markers Of Invertebrate Source Environment And Dispersal In The Middle Mississippi River-Floodplain Ecosystem, David J. Myers, Gregory Whitledge, Matt R. Whiles

Publications

Movement of invertebrates among large rivers, tributaries, and floodplain lakes or dispersal of adult aquatic insects from riverine or floodplain habitats may provide important subsidies to food webs in receiving habitats. Intensive sampling at habitat interfaces and artificial labeling are two approaches to assess freshwater invertebrate dispersal, but these are difficult to implement at a landscape scale. Natural chemical tracers have been used to track dispersal of fishes and marine invertebrates, but the potential applicability of stable isotope ratios as natural tracers of invertebrate dispersal in freshwater environments has not been assessed. We evaluated stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopes (δD …

To support the growing interest in marine fisheries research in areas such as biotelemetry, tagging, and tracking, we assessed the ability of various sedatives to facilitate this research in juvenile cobias Rachycentron canadum (∼300 g), namely, tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222; 150 mg/L), carbon dioxide (CO2; ∼750 mg/L), eugenol (60 mg/L), benzocaine (150 mg/L), and pulsed-DC electrosedation (100 V, 30 Hz, 25% duty cycle, 5-s exposure). Induction times (CO2 [z] > benzocaine [y] > eugenol [y] > MS-222 [y] > electrosedation [x]), recovery of equilibrium (CO2 [z] > eugenol [z] > MS-222 [y] > benzocaine [y] > electrosedation [x]), and responsiveness to tactile stimulus (eugenol [z] …

Articles

Crop productivity is severely reduced by water deficit and drought in many plant species including soybean. Improved root and shoot traits can contribute to drought tolerance ability of the plant. This research was conducted to identify QTL that underlie several root and shoot traits in the ‘Essex’ by ‘Forrest’ (ExF RILs, n=94) recombinant inbred line (RIL) soybean population. Field collected samples were used for gathering phenotypic data of basal root thickness (BRT), lateral root number (LRN), maximum root length (MRL), root fresh weight (RFW), root dry weight (RDW), shoot fresh weight (SFW), shoot dry weight (SDW), and calculating RFW/SFW, and …

Academics And Extracurriculars: A National Study Of College Radio, Lucas R. Mccallister

Research Papers

This study was designed to follow in the steps of a 1969 study of college radio management and structure, both to see how college radio in general has changed, and to update the models presented. A survey was issued through an email listserv affiliated with College Broadcasters Incorporated, and received 50 responses.

Some issues that college radio face have remain unchanged, such staff turnover, training, and college radio and it's relation to the broadcast industry. At the same time, older technologies such as carrier current have fallen by the wayside, while streaming radio has become the new low-cost entry choice. …

Why Gender Matters: A Partial Test Of Travis Hirschi's Element Of Attachment, Danielle Ashley Rios Ms. Jan 2012

Why Gender Matters: A Partial Test Of Travis Hirschi's Element Of Attachment, Danielle Ashley Rios Ms.

Research Papers

Recent studies have demonstrated the important role gender plays in determining the likelihood of involvement in delinquent behavior. Earlier theories of delinquency, including Hirschi’s theory of social control have ignored the importance of gender by ignoring females all together. Using data derived from Wave 1 of the National Youth Survey, the purpose of this study is to conduct a partial test of Hirschi’s Social Control theory to determine whether the theory can properly explain not only delinquency in boys, but also delinquency among girls.

Spatial, Ontogenetic, And Sexual Effects On The Diet Of A Teiid Lizard In Arid South America, J Van Leeuwen, Alessandro Catenazzi, M Holmgren Dec 2011

Spatial, Ontogenetic, And Sexual Effects On The Diet Of A Teiid Lizard In Arid South America, J Van Leeuwen, Alessandro Catenazzi, M Holmgren

Publications

Most lizard species feed on small arthropods, and although some are omnivorous, only a few species are strict herbivores. We studied the diet of Dicrodon guttulatum, a teiid lizard endemic to the arid coastal deserts and dry forests of northern Peru. Herbivory by this lizard has been identified as a potential limiting factor in the regeneration of plant communities in these dry ecosystems. We collected gastric and fecal samples of adult males, adult females, and juveniles of D. guttulatum in different plant communities. Based on the ontogenetic shift from insectivory to herbivory observed in other herbivorous lizards, we hypothesized …

Have Household Exposure Claims Washed Out In Illinois?: Nelson V. Aurora Equipment Co., 909 N.E.2d 931 (Ill. App. Ct. 2009), Kelly M. Murray

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Asbestos litigation is the longest-running mass tort litigation in the history of the United States.  Law suits concerning asbestos exposure emerged during the 1970s, after it was conclusively proven that asbestos exposure caused serious health conditions.  The diseases caused by exposure to asbestos, however, typically do not manifest themselves for twenty to forty years after the initial exposure.  Due to the extended latency period, more plaintiffs emerge as time goes on, and litigation tactics must evolve to accommodate new classes of plaintiffs.  Nelson v. Aurora Equipment Co. marks one of the most recent trends in this toxic tort litigation: …

On The Interpenetration Of Nature And Spirit: A Loving Relationship With The Earth And Our Natural Environment, Christina Marie Gould Dec 2011

On The Interpenetration Of Nature And Spirit: A Loving Relationship With The Earth And Our Natural Environment, Christina Marie Gould

Dissertations

In this dissertation I examine our relationship with the Earth and our natural environment by clarifying what it means to be human. I do this by looking at the interpenetration of spheres of being or philosophical anthropology to articulate how the human being is the dynamic meeting point of life and spirit. In this interpenetration of life and spirit, the task of the human being as loving flashes forth. On the basis of this task, it is possible to realize a loving relationship with the Earth and our natural environment that is not based on domination or use. To understand …

The canopy cover of the Pinus contorta forests of west-central Alberta, dictates colonization of the forest floor ground layer. This dynamic ground layer is a mosaic of feather mosses and reindeer lichens in a system driven by disturbance. In this project, anthropogenic was used to control canopy cover change and study its effects on the ground layer. Timber companies selectively mechanically thinned sections producing three experimental areas with uncut controls. Data were collected from 182, 6.5 m2 plots located in the four thinning areas. Six general areas of inquiry were posed around determining ground layer responses to canopy opening: 1) …

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway Dec 2011

Patternicity And Persuasion: Evolutionary Biology As A Bridge Between Economic And Narrative Analysis In The Law, James D. Ridgway

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Although economic and narrative analyses are clearly useful in exploring legal issues, their foundations and persuasive power have not been thoroughly investigated.  Evolutionary biology can now explain how human beings instinctively approach legal problems, and what features from economic and narrative analysis are rooted in the information processing functions of the brain.  As a result, the most effective aspects of each can be synthesized into a new tool, the archetypal narratives of human interaction.  This article proposes that evolutionary biology indicates that human beings process legal arguments using three archetypal narratives: (1) the story of cooperation, which describes maximizing the …

Fill Material Pollution Under The Clean Water Act: A Need For Legislative Change, Kory R. Watson Dec 2011

Fill Material Pollution Under The Clean Water Act: A Need For Legislative Change, Kory R. Watson

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Clean Water Act was implemented to restore and maintain the Nation’s waters. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System is the principal permitting scheme under the Clean Water Act that is designated to achieve that objective.  In the wake of ambiguous regulations on fill material, a loophole in the Clean Water Act has arisen. Currently, an entity can apply for a fill permit to discharge waste normally regulated under the Nation Pollutant Discharge Elimination System if the discharge is composed of a sufficiently high concentration of solids. This Comment discusses the regulations on fill permitting and the cases interpreting them. …

Common Crowd Dynamics: Shaping Behavioral Intention Models, Marcel Bouchard Dec 2011

Common Crowd Dynamics: Shaping Behavioral Intention Models, Marcel Bouchard

Theses

As the human population grows, so too does the need to understand human behavior. One particularly important aspect of human behavior is how it changes within conglomerations of people, i.e. crowds. In this thesis, a method for modeling crowd behavior is proposed. This method draws inspiration from the concept of behavioral intention and the related forces of attitudes, influences, and social norms. These topics are first defined and detailed, followed by a survey of related research. Next, the model is presented and adapted to three common crowd dynamics, each stressing a different component of behavioral intention. Observations are made about …
