Impulsive Choice In Adults: How Consistent Are Individual Differences?, Douglas J. Navarick Aug 2012

Impulsive Choice In Adults: How Consistent Are Individual Differences?, Douglas J. Navarick

The Psychological Record

With animated cartoons as the reinforcer, college students repeatedly made choices between a schedule providing 15 s of viewing followed by 75 s of waiting and a schedule providing 55 s of waiting followed by 25 s of viewing and then 10 s of waiting. Individual differences in choice behavior were extreme: In the second half of the first session, on at least 70% of the trials, 40% of subjects chose the small (15-s) reinforcer (impulsivity) and 40% the large (25-s) reinforcer (self-control). Each of these subjects continued to choose the same schedule consistently throughout the second session 1 - …

Stimulus Movement And The Intensity Of Attention, David A. Washburn, R. Thompson Putney Aug 2012

Stimulus Movement And The Intensity Of Attention, David A. Washburn, R. Thompson Putney

The Psychological Record

A stimulus movement effect has been reported in which learning by nonhuman animals was significantly better with moving than with stationary stimuli. In the present investigation, this effect was extended to human participants (N = 56) and further explicated. In Experiment 1 the students responded significantly more accurately and rapidly on a battery of computerized tasks with moving versus stationary stimuli. In Experiment 2 performance on a concurrent task was systematically slowed even as performance was enhanced on two different primary tasks by stimulus movement, which supports the interpretation that these effects are mediated by attention. A distinction between procedural …

Fast Mapping And Exclusion (Emergent Matching) In Developmental Language, Behavior Analysis, And Animal Cognition Research, Krista M. Wilkinson, William V. Dube, William J. Mcilvane Aug 2012

Fast Mapping And Exclusion (Emergent Matching) In Developmental Language, Behavior Analysis, And Animal Cognition Research, Krista M. Wilkinson, William V. Dube, William J. Mcilvane

The Psychological Record

Researchers from behavior analytic, developmental, and comparative perspectives have all investigated the conditions under which new arbitrary (symbolic) stimulus-stimulus relations are acquired. For example, young children, people with severe mental retardation, and several species of nonhuman mammals all exhibit emergent matching (EM) in the context of a well-established matching-to-sample baseline: When presented with an undefined sample stimulus and a comparison array that includes one undefined comparison and one or more baseline comparisons, participants select the undefined comparison. Further, subsequent testing may show a learning outcome: Exposure to EM trials may result in a new defined relation involving the formerly undefined …

Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly Aug 2012

Anterior Hypothalamic Stimulation Decreases Serum Immunoglobulin G Concentrations, Paul L. Lambert, Ernest H. Harrell, Kimberly Kelly

The Psychological Record

Neuroimmunological research has indicated that hypothalamic structures play an important role in the modulation of immunoresponsivity. We report that electrical stimulation of the anterior hypothalamus decreases the concentration of Immunoglobulin G (lgG) in rat serum. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to either an anterior or dummy electrode group. Following the determination of baseline IgG concentrations animals were placed in an operant chamber where electrical stimulation was delivered to animals in the anterior group. Animals in the dummy electrode group were placed in an operant chamber but received no brain stimulation through the attached cable. IgG concentrations were determined for …

Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta Aug 2012

Superstitious Behavior And Response Stereotypy Prevent The Emergence Of Efficient Rule-Governed Behavior In Humans, Richard Pisacreta

The Psychological Record

This study examined whether humans would learn to solve simple problems by applying an efficient rule, that is, concept teaming. Twenty-four college students were shown a series of five letter combinations created from the first three letters of the alphabet (A, B, and C), presented on a computer terminal (e.g., ACAAA). Pressing computer keyboard keys changed the letters of the alphabet. When all five letters were identical (e.g., AAAAA), the computer informed the subject that they were correct. The most efficient solution to each problem (the rule) was to change only letters that did not match the majority of the …

Punishment Generalization Gradients With Humans, Jennifer O'Donnell, John Crosbie Aug 2012

Punishment Generalization Gradients With Humans, Jennifer O'Donnell, John Crosbie

The Psychological Record

Electric-shock punishment produces stimulus-generalization gradients with animals. The purpose of the present experiments was to determine whether response-cost punishment produces similar gradients with humans. In Experiment 1, psychophysical procedures were used to generate a set of 10 horizontal lines that differ in length such that adjacent lines were indiscriminable, then reinforcement gradients were obtained with those lines to show that gradients can be produced with those stimuli. In Experiment 2, subjects pressed a lever for points exchangeable for money on a VI schedule in the presence of each stimulus, then points were lost immediately after each response in the presence …

Eco-Theatre And New Media: Devising Toward Transnational Balance, Marnie Jane Glazier Aug 2012

Eco-Theatre And New Media: Devising Toward Transnational Balance, Marnie Jane Glazier

Dissertations

This dissertation seeks to address the pivotal ecological and technological realities of the twenty-first century, currently giving rise to new patterns of existence and new paradigms of human inquiry. This study will ask how technological innovation and environmental urgency have altered the ways in which human beings think, and thus perceive the world around them, changing human behavior, or non-behavior, and calling forth new imperatives for the arts, and namely for the Theatre. Most significantly, the dissertation attempts to traverse the shadow-lands, between our ecologies and our technologies, exploring those essential points of convergence in the borderlands where Eco-Theatre and …

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer Aug 2012

Evaluation Of Growing Media For Annual Herb Production In Green Roof Modular Trays, Mary Margaret Fischer

Theses

Extensive urban development has led to the resurgence of green roofs. These vegetated roofs provide significant ecological and economic benefits including mitigation of the urban heat island effect, reduced storm-water runoff, lower energy costs, increased biodiversity, and improved aesthetics, as well as food production and security. Urban agriculture and food security are becoming increasingly important factors of the green roof renaissance. Due to weight load limitations of potential buildings, the ability to produce quality food in shallow media, less than 6.75 cm, could encourage green roof food production. The effectiveness of a commercially available green roof media and a vermicompost …

Influence Of Coffee Vermicompost On Growth And Nutrient Quality Of Greenhouse Spinach And Field Grown Green Bell Peppers, April Lorraine Vigardt

Theses

The vermicomposting of coffee grounds shows great promise for urban areas and university campuses. Several studies have examined using coffee grounds as a substrate for vermicomposting, however, little is known about its effect on plant growth, yield and quality. Therefore, two studies were conducted to assess these effects on greenhouse spinach and field grown bell peppers. Coffee vermicompost (VC) was utilized in a greenhouse spinach study over two spring growing seasons (2011 and 2012). Coffee VC was added to a 1:1:1 (peat, soil, sand) medium by volume (0, 25, 50 and 75%) in 4.5 L clay pots and seeded with …

Do Large, Infrequent Disturbances Release Estuarine Wetlands From Coastal Squeezing?, Jesse Fruchter Aug 2012

Do Large, Infrequent Disturbances Release Estuarine Wetlands From Coastal Squeezing?, Jesse Fruchter

Theses

As disturbance frequencies, intensities, and types have changed and continue to change in response to changing climate and land-use patterns, coastal communities undergo shifts in both species composition and dominant vegetation type. Over the past 100 years, fire suppression throughout the Northern Gulf of Mexico coast has resulted in shifts towards woody species dominance at the expense of marsh cover. Over the next 100 years, sea levels will rise and tropical storm activity is projected to increase; resultant changes in salinity could reduce cover of salt-intolerant fresh marsh species. Together, the effects of fire suppression upslope and rising salinities downslope …

Beyond Materiality In Animation: Sensuous Perception And Touch In The Tactile Existence Of "Would A Heart Die?", Ellen C. Rocha Souza Aug 2012

Beyond Materiality In Animation: Sensuous Perception And Touch In The Tactile Existence Of "Would A Heart Die?", Ellen C. Rocha Souza

Research Papers

This research focuses on the tangibility three-dimensional stop-motion animation allows in its authorial process, and on the tactility and materiality it evokes on the other side of the screen. Based on these assumptions, I seek to demonstrate how the sense of touch is evoked by the tactility of materials used in three-dimensional stop-motion animation, by drawing on the concepts of fabrication (Wells, 1998), haptic visuality (Marks, 2002), tactile image (Barker, 2009), and on the embodied viewer’s experience as defined by Vivian Sobchack (1992; 2004). This work is also directed to the application of theories to an empirical experience on materiality …

High-Resolution Niche Models Via A Correlative Approach: Comparing And Combining Correlative And Process-Based Information, Victor Bogosian Iii, Eric C. Hellgren, Michael W. Sears, Raymond W. Moody

Publications

Correlative and process-based approaches to describing the ecological niche in a spatially explicit fashion have often been compared in an adversarial framework. We sought to compare niche models developed via classic (correlative only), niche (process-based information), and hybridized (correlative augmented with process-based derived information) approaches, with the goal of determining if the added effort of process-based model development yielded better model fit. Correlative data layers (i.e., habitat models) included vegetation community types, Euclidean distance statistics, neighborhood analyses, and topographically-derived information. Mechanistic data layers were estimates of thermal suitability derived from field-collected datasets and biophysical calculations, and estimates of prey biomass …

There’S Something British About That: Aural Expressionism And Montage In Hitchcock’S Blackmail, Psycho, And The Birds, Laura D. Borger Jun 2012

There’S Something British About That: Aural Expressionism And Montage In Hitchcock’S Blackmail, Psycho, And The Birds, Laura D. Borger

Research Papers

This paper examines the use of visual and aural expressionistic techniques used in Hitchcock’s films Blackmail, Psycho, and The Birds. Hitchcock’s exposure to Soviet montage and German expressionist techniques as a member of The London Film Society may have influenced Blackmail, one of his first sound films. Once mastering the aural expressionism techniques he experimented with in Blackmail, it is as if Hitchcock reverts to silent film-making in later films with Psycho and The Birds. The intensity of image and sound is why Psycho and The Birds are lasting American cultural icons. Rather than …

Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer May 2012

Giving Students The Reins: Taking Advantage Of Service-Learning's Potential As A Pedagogy For Teaching Writing, Tereza Joy Kramer

Dissertations

Service-learning helps students experience the practical applications of learning to write well; it also offers opportunities for students to develop a sense of civic responsibility. Although service-learning is growing in popularity, this pedagogy is not prevalent in English departments. Additionally, service-learning courses across all disciplines typically do not empower students to make their own project decisions. Given these tendencies, it is useful to consider whether service-learning is an effective pedagogy for writing, whether students should be designing their own projects, and what writing instructors could do to facilitate students' growth as writers while completing projects in the community. This is …

Irish Chefs And Restaurants In The Geography Of “Local” Food Value Chains, Leslie Duram, Mary Cawley

Publications

Restaurant chefs and owners have a potentially influential role to play in promoting the use of local foods and supporting producers. Indeed chefs are taste makers, and their conceptualization of local food can influence consumers’ perceptions, knowledge and geographical awareness. Yet their role is not well documented in research literature. In-depth interviews were conducted with seven purposively selected chefs in Galway City, Ireland, who are seeking to develop a local cuisine. Menus, websites, and statements of philosophy were also analyzed. Attention focused on the definition of local food, sources of supply, how local food is used in cuisine, and how …

Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier May 2012

Voice Of Women In Byzantine Music Within The Greek Orthodox Churches In America, Rachel Nicole Brashier

Theses

Byzantine chant, the music of the Greek Orthodox Churches in America, embeds meanings and functions as a methodological tool which constructs and teaches about the role of women within church communities. This thesis explores how as cultural group identity, belongingness, and gender identity are semiotically iconized, purified, and recursively transmitted through the liturgical music of the church, specifically hymns about women saints and The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God. This work is a culmination of twelve years of ethnomusicological fieldwork conducted by the author in Midwestern Greek Orthodox churches and monasteries, using participant-observation techniques. The work outlines the …

Evaluation Of Soybean Recombinant Inbred Lines For Yield Potential And Resistance To Sudden Death Syndrome, James Arthur Anderson May 2012

Evaluation Of Soybean Recombinant Inbred Lines For Yield Potential And Resistance To Sudden Death Syndrome, James Arthur Anderson

Theses

Evaluation of soybean recombinant inbred lines for seed weight yield, agronomic traits, and resistance to sudden death syndrome Sudden death syndrome (SDS) caused by Fusarium virguliforme is a devastating disease in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) that causes up to 70% of yield losses depending on the developmental stage when the plant become infected. The characterization of resistance is greatly significant for disease management. Therefore, three populations were developed by crossing three resistant lines, `Hamilton', LS90-1920 and LS97-1610 with a susceptible line to SDS, `Spencer'. Ninety-four F5:6 recombinant inbred lines from each population (Hamilton x Spencer, LS90-1920 x Spencer, and …
