The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson Dec 2012

The Pragmatic Role Of Code-Switching And Simultaneous Production During Play Contexts Of Bimodal Bilingual Hearing Children Of Deaf Parents, John R. Hanson

Theses

It is difficult, if not impossible to find another code-switching condition that allows for the production of "simultaneous" language use in communication like that which is found in bimodal bilingualism. In 2002, Bauer, Hall, and Kruth conducted a study that examined code-switching in a play context for a German/English bilingual child. Emmorey, Borinstein, and Thomson in 2005 investigated bimodal bilingualism in adults. However there has not been a study like these for hearing children using ASL/English who have Deaf parents. By applying Bauer, Hall, and Kruth's study as a template for research into code-switching and adapting some of the processes …

How Parents Use Television To Enrich Their Children's Cultural Identity: The Case Study Of Shalom Sesame And Jewish Life, Elizabeth Michele Spezia Dec 2012

How Parents Use Television To Enrich Their Children's Cultural Identity: The Case Study Of Shalom Sesame And Jewish Life, Elizabeth Michele Spezia

Theses

A small-scale ethnographic case study of young children's learning from television in southern Illinois provides understanding about the frameworks used for interpreting media use in family life. The research consisted of in-home interviews about patterns of using the media, observations, and family diaries of children's viewing behavior to examine family engagement with a prosocial television program, Shalom Sesame, depicting Jewish culture, Hebrew language, holidays, and the land of Israel. Family responses to the program are identified in terms of appeal, use, and overall fit with Jewish identity and tradition in the homes. Data analysis reveals that quality educational program features …

Image Bodies, Avatar Ontologies: Rendering The Virtual In Digital Culture, Adam M. Davis Dec 2012

Image Bodies, Avatar Ontologies: Rendering The Virtual In Digital Culture, Adam M. Davis

Dissertations

In 2009 five avatar-themed films were released, one of which became the highest grossing film to date, signaling that in addition to their popularity in videogames and virtual worlds, avatars are culturally salient figures which demand scholarly attention. Avatars, virtual environments, and user behavior have evolved significantly since virtual reality captured public and academic attention at the close of the twentieth century, and this dissertation is an attempt to theorize the avatar in contemporary digital culture. By interlacing new media philosophy and analyses of cinematic texts I situate the avatar at the nexus between digital images and interactive bodies, with …

Devising Cybernetic Fruit: A Posthuman Performance Methodology, Nico Wood Oct 2012

Devising Cybernetic Fruit: A Posthuman Performance Methodology, Nico Wood

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Devising is a collaborative method of experimental theatre production that seeks to decenter traditional power structures. Posthumanism is a philosophical lens that uses postmodern ideology to critique and expand Humanist convictions. Cybernetic Fruit: A Posthuman Fairytale was a cast performance that deployed devising methodologies in order to stage posthumanist research. This essay examines Cybernetic Fruit in order to reveal unique processes, question authorship, and articulate the connections between posthumanism and devising.

“I Am An American”: Communicating Refugee Identity And Citizenship, Brett J. Craig Oct 2012

“I Am An American”: Communicating Refugee Identity And Citizenship, Brett J. Craig

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This study examines the messages in a citizenship preparation class being utilized by refugees and instructors. Through an ethnographic study of a citizenship class at an urban community center in a Midwestern city, an examination of these messages reveals assimilationist expectations and norms for refugees adjusting to American society. Responses from the refugees reveal how these messages are being either accepted or resisted as they negotiate new identities. A contradiction was found between what the citizenship class teaches and the perceptions of refugees regarding the meanings of American citizenship. In particular, refugees reported to often face a difficult situation in …

The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy Oct 2012

The Performance Cult Of The Room: Embodied Audiencing And Movie Riffing As Shared Sense-Making, Matt Foy

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This ethnographic study explores everyday cultural performance and embodied audiencing practices at a performance-centered midnight screening of the 2003 cult film The Room.

Prior to attending and co-performing the film’s group audiencing ritual, the author explores fan appropriation of the previously obscure film and fan-generated and circulated performance scripts. Drawing on thick description and bodily knowledge gained from attending and performing The Room’s audiencing ritual, the author explores how the ritual’s scripts are embraced, embellished, and deviated from while critiquing problematic aspects of the ritual.

Within these intersections, the author discusses ways in which cultural performance and embodied …

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres Oct 2012

Legitimacy, Innovation, And Harmonization: Precursors To Operationalizing Biofuels Sustainability Standards, Jody M. Endres

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

How to balance land uses to sustainably feed, clothe, and power a burgeoning population aspiring to western lifestyles will be a profound, if not the most profound, challenge to policymakers in the 21st century.  And, climate change’s unpredictable effects on natural systems will exacerbate already complex, uncertain, and contentious land use decision-making.  While biomass-based energy policies gained momentum throughout the 2000s as one way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, assumptions about biofuels’ environmental and societal benefits are beginning to come under closer scrutiny.  In response, public laws have incorporated varying forms of sustainability considerations.  Many private standards have emerged, however, …

Burdens Of Proof And Qualified Immunity, Kenneth Duvall Oct 2012

Burdens Of Proof And Qualified Immunity, Kenneth Duvall

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

Despite the need to strike a proper balance between effective § 1983 suits to deter government misconduct and corresponding, robust defenses to deter frivolous suits, courts across the nation cannot agree on the fundamental questions of what the proper defenses to § 1983 actions are or how to allocate the burdens of proof in such litigation.  This Article would remedy this situation, proposing an approach that offers both a single defense to § 1983 claims and a uniform allocation of the burdens of proof when that defense is raised.

In Part II, this Article briefly explains the burdens of proof, …
