Adequate Diet For The School Child, Susan Z. Wilder
Adequate Diet For The School Child, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Every mother is anxious that her children grow into men and women who will be a credit to the home and community from which they come. Probably one of the biggest factors that will help to bring this about is the food that the mother prepares every day and which she trains the children to eat. She does get tired of ever lastingly preparing food and often wonders if she is feeding the right thing for health and growth.

The natural is the beautiful. Failure to recognize this truth has resulted in strange fashions. We have all seen or heard of styles which cause deformity. We wonder at the African tribes who go thru torture to elongate the lobes of their ears; we send missionaries to China to Christianize them, and one of the first acts of the missionary is to teach them to refrain from binding the feet. And yet at home we are binding our feet, deforming them by the type of shoe we wear. A distorted, malformed foot is no more beautiful than a misshapen head, …

“What shall I have for dessert” is an ever present question to the busy house-wife. Desserts that are easy to make, attractive and wholesome, are always acceptable. Fresh fruits or canned fruits make the simplest desserts. The housewife who has a good supply of other of these can always fool that she has something fine for dessert at a moments notice. An Experimental Comparison Of The Feeding Value Of Soy Bean With Alfalfa Hay For Feeding Dairy Cows, Wilard R. Beall

The tendency during the last few years has been to use more and more of the legumes for feeding dairy cows. Just a few years ago (1)”Dairymen near the Yakima Valley, Washington state, fed their cows nothing but alfalfa hay during the winter. The cows received 40 to 50 pounds of alfalfa per cow per day and produced from 6,000 to 7, 000 pounds of milk per year. A Guernsey cow gave 20 pounds of milk per day, four and one-half months after calving and have received no feed but alfalfa hay for two months previous to that time. The …

Cured Meats Temptingly Served, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
The question of better and more extensive use of home grown products is always of interest to the farmer’s wife. This is particularly true if by their use she can reduce the cost of living and at the same time serve the family well balanced meals that mean right living and better health. Home butchering gives the family a meat supply that is much cheaper than that which can be purchased each day from the butcher shop. There is the advantage of having the finer cuts of meat a t a very nominal price. If interest has been taken in …

No man has a more difficult task than the farmer. He deals with the irresistible laws of nature and economics. He makes daily use of the teachings of chemistry, biology, bacteriology, entomology, botany, geology, and physics. He must know the laws of heredity, nutrition, and growth. He must have clear vision and prophetic foresight, since his turnover is slow at the best. He is at once a laborer, an employer of labor, a manufacturer and a tradesman, a capitalist, and a business manager. He must have broad understanding, sound reasoning, and good judgment. He has the joy of productive achievement. …

Adequate Diet For The School Child, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Ease of digestion and adequacy in protein, minerals, and vitamins are absolutely essential for the school child. The results of mistakes in the feedings of school children are not seen as quickly as in the case of younger children. Mistakes in feeding at this age may result in serious diseases conditions later on. The adolescent child probably requires as much or more food than the adult because he is growing rapidly. The three food needs for both children and adults are those to supply building materials for repair and growth, fuel foods for heat and energy, and to take care …

Eating for Health is more important than for the more pleasure and satisfaction of eating. But why not plan your meals for both?
