The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl
The Effects Of Feeding A Ration Containing Erythromycin Thiocyanate To Growing-Finishing, Eldon Walter Juhl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A large number of Midwest farmers depend upon the swine enterprise for a part of their annual income. Swine sales constitute a large per cent of the cash farm income in this geographical area and therefore these animals represent a very important phase of livestock production. Approximately 18 per cent of the total cash farm income in South Dakota is obtained from the production of hogs. A successful swine producer is primarily interested in obtaining the greatest return for his financial investment and labor output. In order to attain these goals it is often desirable to feed a highly fortified …
Respiration Rate As A Measure Of Performance In Adaptation Studies In Oats, Norman E. Williams
Respiration Rate As A Measure Of Performance In Adaptation Studies In Oats, Norman E. Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate differences, if any, in respiration rates found among varieties
generally similar but strongly contrasting in a few specific yield influencing characters. The basic assumption has been that yield is the summation of p hysiological processes and the components of yield should therefore also be expected to be based on these processes. Eight oat varieties which represented gross differences in phenotypic expression of yield, maturity and plant type were selected for this study. The material used in this study was grown at Brookings during the 1958 season in three replications with blocks completely randomized. In …

Methionine And Related Compounds And Selenium Poisoning, O.E. Olson, C.W. Carlson, Eriks Lettis
Methionine And Related Compounds And Selenium Poisoning, O.E. Olson, C.W. Carlson, Eriks Lettis
Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)
The problem of selenium poisoning has been known for many years, but the mechanism by which this element exerts its toxicity has not been clarified. As a result, what control measures are now available are of an empirical nature, and they fail to the give the most desirable protection. In search of a better control mechanism, the role of compounds containing biologically active methyl groups has been studied. Some experimental work indicated that these types of compounds might indeed be involved in the metabolism of selenium. However, not all workers’ data were in agreement, and it was felt that further …

Wintering Calves With Alfalfa Hay Or Prairie Hay, L. B. Embry, A. C. Dittman, G. F. Gastler
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Alfalfa hay has been recognized for many years as being a high-quality roughage for cattle. However, some cattle feeders in the state prefer prairie hay over alfalfa hay.
The experiment reported here was designed to compare the performance of calves wintered on (1) alfalfa hay alone, (2) a mixture of alfalfa hay and prairie hay, (3) prairie hay and soybean meal pellets, and (4) prairie hay alone. In addition to these companions, some studies were made on the effect of winter gains on summer performance of the calves when grazing native prairie pasture.

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
South Dakota State College research workers, with the help of the Field Station Advisory Council and the cooperation of the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks, began planning and establishing experimental projects at the Antelope Range Field Station in 1947. The Range Station consists of 7,920 acres of range Janel in east-central Harding County. A large part of this tract, 6,680 acres, is under the control of the state office of School and Public Lands; 1,120 acres are owned by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks; and 120 acres are privately owned by a neighbor. Prior to …

Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer
Effect Of Various Feed Additives On Gain, Feed Efficiency And Digestibility Of Rations By Lambs, Paul R. Zimmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is now an established practice to feed continuously certain feed additives in the rations of simple stomach animals for the control of disease, digestive troubles, bloat, internal parasites and for their growth stimulating properties. It is very important that additives of an antibacterial nature in rations for ruminants be studied thoroughly so their beneficial effects, if any, can be determined. If the bacteria are not functioning normally and digesting properly, the animal will suffer. Digestion of the ration would also be affected, and the efficiency of feed conversion would diminish. Supplements to the ruminant ration in the form of …

Some Effects Of Antibiotics On A Candida Albicans Population In The Intestinal Tracts Of Chickens, Roger E. Winans
Some Effects Of Antibiotics On A Candida Albicans Population In The Intestinal Tracts Of Chickens, Roger E. Winans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Poultrymen are becoming extremely conscious of any disease which results in a decrease in production. Some of these diseases are the result of new intensive methods of management which place considerable stress on the individual bird. Probably the most important fungal diseases of poultry are aspergillosis, favus and moniliasis. Aspergillosis, an infection of the respiratory tract, is generally thought to be caused by Aspergillis fumigatus Frensius. Favus, a chronic dermatomyoosis (dermatomycosis?) is caused by Achorian gallimae. Moniliasis an infection of the mucous membrane lining the upper digestive tract is associated with Candida albicans and other members of the genus Candida. …
An Investigation Of Costs For Heating And Power Generation At South Dakota State College, Julius William Ulmer
An Investigation Of Costs For Heating And Power Generation At South Dakota State College, Julius William Ulmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This investigation is to determine the amount of steam necessary to heat the buildings and to generate power on the campus of South Dakota State College. It is also concerned with a comparison of the cost of producing steam by burning coal and by burning natural gas. Part of the campus buildings are heated by low pressure steam. When the turbo-generator is in operation, the turbine exhaust steam is used for heating purposes. During periods of cold weather the turbine exhaust steam is not sufficient, and therefore steam at boiler pressure is reduced to the turbine exhaust pressure through a …

Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh
Stilbestrol For Growing-Fattening Cattle, Dean Vinton Radabaugh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The production of beef in South Dakota is one of the largest industries in the state. Those in the business of producing beef are constantly looking for newer methods of management, nutrition and breeding which will economically increase the production of beef. It has been shown that adding diethylstilbestrol to the rations or implanting diethylstilbestrol pellets in the ears will generally economically increase beef production by increasing rate of gains and feed efficiency. Several questions have been raised by livestock producers and research workers since the introduction of stilbestrol in beef cattle production. Some questions are: Does the administration of …
Comparison Of Cellulose Digestion In Vivo And In Vitro, Charles Frederick Lefevre
Comparison Of Cellulose Digestion In Vivo And In Vitro, Charles Frederick Lefevre
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Because of the time consuming and costly nature of the total collection in vivo digestion trials, various other methods have been tried to get reliable digestibility data in a faster and less costly manner. One of the more recent methods being used is the “artificial rumen” (in vitro) technique. This method makes use of rumen bacteria and simulated conditions in the rumen of the animal. Cost, tie, and labor saving are definitely in its favor. Some of the work reported indicates the in vitro technique can be a useful method in nutrition research. Studies on the effect of stage of …
The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani
The Amino Acid Composition Of Four Varieties Of Rice From India, Devaki B. Kripalani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the evaluation of protein quality rather than the total quantity of protein in foods. This is indeed a timely approach, as utilization of the amino acids, which are constituents of proteins, is dependent on all of the essential amino acids being present simultaneously and in proper proportion. Because rice is widely used by the people in India and since there is no particularly rich source of protein, other than the pulses, in the diet of common people, more information on the amino acid composition of the foods (especially rice) commonly consumed, is …
The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson
The Physiology And Some Nutritional Aspects Of A Rumen Bacterium, Norma P. Christopherson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the interesting symbiotic relationships in nature is that existing between the ruminants and their microbial population. This arrangement has solved for them the problem of existing on an herbivorous diet. Most mammals can derive little benefit from the potentially available energy in plant materials, which is locked in the complex, insoluble polysaccharide, cellulose. Cellulase is not a mammalian enzyme, but it is part of the chemical machinery of a number of bacteria, some species of which reside in the rumen. Many different organisms are present and their biochemical activities have not as yet been completely delineated. All of …
