A Study Of The Effectiveness Of The Three Year Homemaking Program At Brookings High School As Evidenced By Graduates Who Have Established Homes, With Implications For Curriculum Revision, Orthula Doescher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Homemaking education, like all other phases of education must be appraised, evaluated and revised at intervals in order that one may be reasonably sure that it is accomplishing what it purports to do. One purpose is to help girls to assume happily and successfully their inevitable roles as wives and mothers in the fast changing society. The purpose of this study was to have graduates of Brookings High School, who have taken three years of Homemaking, evaluate the course offerings to determine the effectiveness of the program in the light of help and confidence given the girls in their roles …

Swine Production Guide For South Dakota 4-H Club Members, L. J. Kortan
SDSU Extension Circulars
Formerly there were two general types of swine: the lard type and the bacon type. Today, in general, all breeds are considered meat type and are being developed as meat hogs. The more popular breeds are: Hampshire, Berkshire, Yorkshire, Pol.and China, Chesterwhite, Durocs, Spotted Poland China, Tamworth and Landrace. Note the lifelike picture of a finished market hog on this page. An animal like this carries a high percentage of its weight in the most valuable cuts; the ham loins and bacon sides. This is the type of hog now in demand, a type to keep in mind when planning …

Meal Planning For South Dakota 4-H Girls, Jane Meyer
SDSU Extension Circulars
Cooking's fun, so let's begin! Even if you're a very young 4-H girl, you can cook. But, you must start with simple foods. As you learn more, and practice, cooking will be easier. You can then make more difficult dishes, and even plan and prepare some family meals. Let's start by learning some basic rules. You need to be neat and clean; you should always be safe; you should measure correctly; you must know how to read recipes. A good cook knows and follows these rules. You'll want to know them too!

Feeding Systems For Layers, C. W. Carlson, W. Kohlmeyer, W. C. Morgan
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Numerous reports show there are many feeding systems for layers that the poultryman will find satisfactory. The important factor for good results is proper management of the feeding system. Essentially the most common feeding systems recommended and in use today are ( 1) all-mash, ( 2) 18-20 percent protein mash with limited or free-choice grain, and (3) 25-27 percent protein concentrate with free-choice grain. Some poultrymen have reported successful use of a 32 percent protein concentrate fed free-choice with grains. The laying hen has a remarkable ability to balance her own ration, but it has generally been felt that more …
Parakeratosis: A Nutritional Disease Of Swine, R. C. Wahlstrom
Parakeratosis: A Nutritional Disease Of Swine, R. C. Wahlstrom
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
A skin disease of swine called parakeratosis has become increasingly prevalent in South Dakota and throughout the United States during the past few years. Minnesota investigators first described parakeratosis in 1953 and suggested that it was of nutritional origin. Recent research at several experiment stations has shown that high levels of calcium and phosphorus in the ration were associated with the disease and that the addition of zinc had a curative effect. Swine affected by parakeratosis have reduced appetite, fail to grow normally, and often exhibit diarrhea during the early stages of the disease. The skin lesions appear almost simultaneously …

Meat : Selection-Care-Cookery, Rena Wills
SDSU Extension Circulars
Meats are excellent protein foods. Meat protein contains generous amounts of the essential amino acids. These are the amino acids which your food must provide to enable your body to build its protein. Protein rich vegetables and cereals may lack one or more of these essential amino acids. Meat enhances their protein value when it is served with them. The B vitamins and the minerals--phosphorus, iron and copper--are found along with protein in the meat. Pork is an exceptionally good source of thiamine and iron. Under ordinary circumstances, if your protein needs are met, your body's need for the B …
Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus
Listeria Monocytogenes, Alvin G. Fiscus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Organisms of the genus Listeria have stimulated a great deal of interest as a result of their pathogenicity and affinity for the central nervous system. The clinical condition produced by this organism is known as listeriosis, or in ruminants as “circling disease”. The organism was described by Murray, Webb and Swann in 1926 as the causative agent of an eqizootic infection in laboratory rabbits and guinea pigs. Their observations showed that the disease produced emaciation, abundant exudate in serous cavities, necrotic foci in and on various organs, and a marked increase in monocytes circulating in the blood stream. The name …

Growth And Physiology Of A Soil Organism Which Is Resistant To The Toxic Effects Of Sodium Selenite, John C. Mickelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The occurrence of selenium in soils of the United States and its cinnection with a disease of livestock originally called selenium poisoning , is well established. The states of North Dakota and South Dakota have both reported areas of land on which the disease occurs. In 1954, soil samples (from areas in South Dakota in which there is solenium poisoning) we've brought to the South Dakota State College Experiment Stot1on for analysis. From one of those samples, a bacterium was found which was noted as being resistant to the toxicity of selenium and also as being capable of reducing sodium …
A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
A Survey Of The Value Of The Homemaking Curriculum In South Dakota With Implications For Revision, Carol Siemann Wagner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Homemaking education is no longer “cooking sand sewing” but is a program directed toward the goal of helping students to become happy, responsible family members. From this goal stems the family centered approach to teaching. It relates the curriculum to the realities of family living by using family life situations for learning experiences. The teacher is no longer the authority on material to be learned. To develop the family centered program, parents and students are cooperating with teachers in curriculum planning. A Guide for Developing a Homemaking Curriculum in Junior and Senior High Schools of South Dakota, published in …
The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte
The Effect Of Vitamin D. Supplementation On The Growth And Development Of Swine, Darwin Eugene Stolte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vitamin D, through its specific action in calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone growth, is necessary for the production of a sound, well-developed skeleton which his essential to profitable pork production. The fact that common feeds used in swine rations, especially grains and plant protein supplements, are lacking in calcium, vitamin D and in some cases phosphorus, accounts in part for the appearance of rickets and kindred deficiency symptoms under many practical conditions. Rickets and related bone diseases are normally abated by sufficient exposure to direct sunlight. However, in instances where swine are confined indoors or do not receive sufficient …

A Genetic Analysis Of Economic Characteristics Of Range Beef Heifers, Keith O. Zoellner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The beef cattle industry is one og the major sources of rural income in South Dakota. According to the South Dakota Crop and Livestock Reporting Services (1956), there were 1,492,000 beef cows and yearling beef heifers on the farms and ranches in South Dakota as of January 1, 1957. They also reported that sales from cattle and calves amounted to approximately 34.6 percent of the gross farm and ranch income in the state. Since the beef cattle industry is a major source of the farm and ranch income in South Dakota, any improvement in the performance of beef cattle will …

Comparative Study Of The Scholastic Ability, Scholastic Achievement And Activity Participation Of Home Economics Students At South Dakota State College, Deloris E. Mangels
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The status of the professional home economist is dependent at least partially on the relative standing of the home economics student to other students. While it is recognized that additional factors influence the home economist’s status upon graduation, it is felt that certain knowledge concerning the background of the home economics student would provide valuable information basic to developing a better understanding of home economists and their professional. This study is designed primarily as an investigation of the students enrolled as home economics majors at South Dakota State College. It concerns comparative data of the home economics and the non-home …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Part I. Studies of the effect of dietary carbohydrate and fat.--Part II. Studies of the effect of adding various fractions of linseed oil meal to the diets, including chemical work on the fractions.
The selenium poisoning problem has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota. In these two states, the damage to farm animals has been of great concern to farmers and ranchers in certain areas. The search for control measures against selenium poisoning has involved the testing of purified chemical compounds and natural food products. Purified chemical compounds found to be somewhat effective against selenium poisoning have been …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
An intensity of grazing experiment was initiated in 1942 at the Cottonwood Range Field Station to study the effects of heavy, moderate, and light grazing on the vegetation and on cow and calf production. Results of the first 9 years of this study were reported in South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Bulletin 412 in 1951. These studies have been continued and intensified. The present publication is a progress report on the effects of the intensity of grazing on cow and calf production since 1953 and on the cumulative effects of different grazing intensities on the native vegetation.
Consumption And Preference For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag
Consumption And Preference For Butter And Margarine In Two South Dakota Cities, Norman L. Rollag
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Most of the butter manufactured by South Dakota creameries is Grade B or under as determined by our present Federal grading system. A recent South Dakota study showed that 81 per cent of the butter was Grade B and 19 per cent Grade C, The same study found that about 80 per cent of South Dakota Butter was shipped to markets where a large amount of the other butter was of a higher grade and premiums were paid for higher quality. Present quality standards for butter are based to a large extent on taste preferences of consumers which were assumed …
