Protein And Energy Levels For Wintering Beef Calves And Effects On Subsequent Production, Marcus Hoelscher Feb 1960

Protein And Energy Levels For Wintering Beef Calves And Effects On Subsequent Production, Marcus Hoelscher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The need for minimum amounts of protein and energy by animals for maintenance, growth and production has been recognized for many years. It is also well known that the requirements will vary depending on species, age, weight and rate of growth or production. In order to provide livestock feeders with useful guides in feeding, several feeding standards containing recommended nutrient requirements have been prepared. The most commonly used standards for beef cattle are the “Morrison Feeding Standards” (1956) and the National Research Council’s “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” prepared by the Subcommittee on Beef Cattle Nutrition (1959). Feeding standards give …

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows Jan 1960

The Effects Of Different Methods Of Freezing On The Viability Of Rabbit Ova, Mansur Ferdows

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the period between 1940 and 1960 artificial insemination of dairy cows grew from the experimental stage to an extensive business enterprise in the United States. According to the Dairy herd Improvement Letter (Vol. 36, No. 3, A.R.S., U.S.D.A.) only 7,359 cows and heifers were artificially inseminated in 1939, but by 1959 this number had increased to 6,932,249. Along with the extended use of superior sires, a logical conclusion was that some attention should be directed toward increasing the use of good female germ plasm. If this could be accomplished, a more rapid improvement in the quality of dairy cattle …

Effects Of Irrigation And Fertilization On Alfalfa Yield And Quality, Donald J. Brosz Jan 1960

Effects Of Irrigation And Fertilization On Alfalfa Yield And Quality, Donald J. Brosz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quality of agricultural products is a concern of the American farmer. Quality alone often decides the market value of his product and may be the deciding issue in his net profit. So that he may demand top prices, the producer of bread wheat must produce a grain which is high in protein because high protein wheat is required by flour mills for high grade flour. The farmer raising barley, however, may have to aim for low protein grain since this is the most desirable for the malting industry. The shape, size, and cooking quality of potatoes seems to improve …

Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller Jan 1960

Ruminal Variation In Ph, Temperature, Bacterial Flora, And In Vitro Activity As Affected By Ration Change And Season, Norman Theodore Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The outstanding importance of the vast member of microorganisms in the rumen to the nutritional physiology of the ruminant makes it imperative that the factors influencing the numbers and types of these organism be thoroughly understood. A knowledge of when these ruminal fluctuations occur and their causes, whether it be due to external environment or dietary change, would be of significant value in the preparation of rations which could stimulate the ruminal flora to their maximum efficiency and in turn receive maximum feed efficiency from the animal. The specific objectives of this project are as follows: to make periodic checks …

A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood Jan 1960

A System For Making Selective Matings In Dairy Cattle, Basil Ralph Eastwood

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term “selective matings” implies the selection of a sire to breed to each female on an individual, rather than a group or herd basis. Mating systems, other than random mating, may be classed either as the mating of like to like or as the mating of unlikes. This likeness or unlikeness may be based either on blood relationship or on individual appearance. The advantage and limitations of each mating system have been well worked out on a theoretical basis, and some of system have been thoroughly tested by experimentation and in the field. In actual practice many breeders use …

Study Of Dietaries And Nutritional Status Of Adolescent Indian Girls In Boarding Schools Of The Dakotas, Margaret I. Talcott Jan 1960

Study Of Dietaries And Nutritional Status Of Adolescent Indian Girls In Boarding Schools Of The Dakotas, Margaret I. Talcott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The adolescent period is recognized as a crucial one in the development of individuals. This study is centered on the nutritional status of girls who are in this stage of development. Cooperative regional studies by experiment stations and school lunch studies in several states have covered many phases of nutritional status for various population groups in recent years. Investigators agrees that there is need for further information in regard to the dietary practices and nutritional status of adolescents, and there appears to be the greatest concern with respect to adolescent girls. The average annual birth rate for Indians in the …

Physiologic Specialization Within Sphacelotheca Reiliana (Kühn) Clint. On Sorghum And The Biology Of Its Chlamydospores In The Soil, Ibrahim Aziz Al-Sohaily

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corresponding to the title, the present study was concerned with two aspects. In the first of these, two chlamydosporous sori from corn were collected from California and Washington and 18 chlamydosporous sori from sorghum were collected from California, New Mexico, Texas, and India. Chlamydosporous cultures or paired monosporidial cultures from these were hypodermically injected as desired into seedlings of one or more of four sweet corn varieties and 57 sorghum varieties. Chlamydosporous cultures from the two corn sources yielded head smut on three sweet corn varieties and not on any of 14 sorghum varieties. Cultures from 14 of 18 sorghum …

A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy Jan 1960

A Physiological Study On The Amino Acid Requirements Of Sphaerophorus Necrophorus, Douglas W. Kennedy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Investigation into the growth requirements of Sphaerophorus necrophorus (Flugge, 1886) Prevot, 1938 presents a difficult area for study. Only a few such investigations have been attempted in the past for this highly pleomorphic, gram negative, and thread like micro-organism. At present, there is a great deal of confusion concerning its growth characteristics. The development of a chemically defined medium will certainly play an important role in obtaining consistent growth characteristics which are more typical of the organics. The importance of this organism has been centered upon its role as a pathogen. As a cause of necrobacillosis diseased of domestic and …

A Search For Rules For International Wheat Surplus Disposal, James L. Leibfried Aug 1959

A Search For Rules For International Wheat Surplus Disposal, James L. Leibfried

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Before a cooperative plan can be formulated for utilizing the wheat surpluses in underdeveloped countries, there are three points on which the exporting nations will have to agree. They are: (1) uniform terms (rates of interest and repayment, and etc.) for concessional sales; (2) the level of commercial wheat imports, if any, that the underdeveloped countries should be required to maintain; and (3) a basis for determining the quantity of wheat each exporting nation should supply on concessional terms. The general purpose of this study was to attempt to establish a basic rule for determining the level of commercial wheat …

The purpose here was two-fold: (1) to compare several kinds of salts and get some idea of their relative toxicities; and (2) to establish what concentrations of salts would be best used in experimental work with large animals.

Antibacterial And Antifungal Agents In Diets For Laying And Breeding Hens, C.W. Carlson May 1959

Antibacterial And Antifungal Agents In Diets For Laying And Breeding Hens, C.W. Carlson

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

In general, the use of arsenic acids (arsanilic acid and 3-nitro 4 hydroxyphenylarsonic) in the diets of laying hens has been observed as a slight increased rate of egg production or improved feed efficiency. However, detrimental effects can be observed with each of the arsenic acids when fed in exceptionally high energy diets. But on average, a 3% improvement in egg production has been observed. Data obtained over the past 2 years at this laboratory with the use of several antibiotics including penicillin, oleandomycin, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline, and streptomycin plus arsanilic acid, the nitrofurans (furazolidone and nitrofurazone) and nystatin in diets …

Alfalfa Silage Effect Of Storage Methods On Feeding Value And On Preservation Of Nutrients, W. C. Mccone, O. E. Olson May 1959

Alfalfa Silage Effect Of Storage Methods On Feeding Value And On Preservation Of Nutrients, W. C. Mccone, O. E. Olson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Feeding trials using beef cattle were conducted with baled alfalfa hay and with alfalfa silage stored in the stack, trench, and upright silo.
Based upon feed costs at the time of storage, the average feed costs per 100 pounds of gain for the several experiments were as follows: baled hay, $18.70; upright silo, $22.35; trench silo, $30.58; and stack silo, $33.58. The greatly increased costs in the case of the trench and stack were the result of excessive fermentation and spoilage losses because air was not properly excluded.
The chemical composition of the dry matter of the various silages was …

High Quality Oats For Growing Pigs, R. C. Wahlstrom Feb 1959

High Quality Oats For Growing Pigs, R. C. Wahlstrom

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

These trials indicate that high quality oats is a good feed for growing-finishing swine. The results show that you can satisfactorily use it to replace up to 40% of the corn in rations when your pigs are on pasture. When they are in dry lot you can replace up to 50% of the corn in mixed rations. Oats with a test weight of less than 35 pounds a bushel may not be as satisfactory.

SDSU Extension Circulars

Sparkling good health is the greatest gift you can give your family. Your children are homemaking trainees and can learn from you. Hundreds of scientific studies show that there is no substitute for good food in the right amounts for building a healthy body. As a result of such research: We know the minimum daily requirements for food values. Better, we have Recommended Daily Allowances that provide a safe margin or individual differences. The foods we need each day are divided into Basic 7 or Basic 4 groups that furnish similar body needs. We know what food values each of …
