The results of this work prior to 1954 were reported in South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars 104 and 107.

Antibiotic Accumulation In An Outdoor Anaerobic Poultry Manure Lagoon, Dennis A. Messmer Jan 1964

Antibiotic Accumulation In An Outdoor Anaerobic Poultry Manure Lagoon, Dennis A. Messmer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is an increasing trend towards the concentration of poultry populations. With the increased popularity of confinement housing and the purchasing of the feed, less land is needed to raise and keep poultry. A serious problem arising from this change is that manure disposal is becoming increasingly difficult for owners of large poultry flocks. Lagoons have been used as a means of poultry waste disposal. This method of manure treatment is not new. The stabilization of waste in a lagoon is limited by the biological population which in turn is controlled by: nutrition, temperature, oxygen, and toxic materials. Oxytetracycline is …

Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick Jan 1964

Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In any feeding operation considerable attention should be given to the selection of a proper ration. A ration that will produce the most rapid gain will not necessarily produce the most economical gain. Rate of gain and fattening depend on the intake of digestible energy in excess of maintenance when the ration contains adequate amounts of other essential nutrients. Since many feed additives have become available in recent years, it is important to know their effects with various types of rations. Diethylstillbestrol have been reported to consistently improve gain and feed efficiency. Other feed additives have not been investigated as …

Problems In The Freeze-Drying Of Foods, Minakshi Desai Jan 1964

Problems In The Freeze-Drying Of Foods, Minakshi Desai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Natural drying of edible seeds and fruits with the aid of the sun and wind is one of the oldest methods of preserving food and was practiced even by the people of the Stone Age. Drying means the removal of water, whereas dehydration means the application of special techniques for the removal of water with minimum damage to appearance, flavor, texture, and nutritive value. Among various methods of dehydration, freeze-drying most satisfactorily fulfills the requirements of minimum damage. Freeze-drying, also known as lypohilization, was introduced as a method of treating glands for pharmaceutical purposes. Being a slow and expensive process, …

Studies On The Limiting Amino Acids In Laying Hen Diets, Darwin Gene Britzman Jan 1964

Studies On The Limiting Amino Acids In Laying Hen Diets, Darwin Gene Britzman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experiments were conducted over a period of two years to study the effects of amino acid supplementation of low and high energy and low and high protein diets on the performance of SCWL laying hens. This research was conducted in two different environmental conditions; one a litter floor, cold-wall poultry house, the other a warm-wall poultry house with individual cages. In the litter floor, cold-wall environment, methionine and lysine were added singly and in combination to a 16 percent protein diet containing 1414 Calories of metabolizable energy per pound and methionine singly and a combination of methionine and lysine to …

1962 Annual Report : Extension Service Indian Program In South Dakota, Cooperative Extension Service, South Dakota State College

SDSU Extension Circulars

Because of great differences in economics and people on each reservation area, it is not possible to set forth in this report the specific objectives of all programs conducted. Several broad objectives were therefore selected for major program emphasis. They are: To strengthen and encourage adult responsibility in community living through leadership training. To encourage through training programs greater utilization of the unemployed and underemployed human resources of the reservation population. To teach better nutrition and food habits and to improve the uses of surplus food commodities distributed to welfare clients. To teach sound ranch management principles to Indian ranch …

A Survey Of The Extent Of Adult Homemaking Education In Vocationally Approved High Schools In South Dakota With Implications For Possible Expansion, Marlene Olson Westby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to learn the extent of adult homemaking education in vocationally approved high schools in South Dakota and to investigate opinions concerning possibilities for increasing the adult homemaking program. Analysis of the data from the returned questionnaires revealed that, while homemaking education for adults is available as a part of the vocational program in some high schools in South Dakota, in the majority of high schools, it is found to be entirely lacking. Of the 109 vocationally approved high schools investigated, 13 offered adult homemaking classes at some time during the three-year period. The majority, …

Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen Jan 1963

Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last 25 years, several experiments have been conducted to study the amount of vitamin A and carotene needed by cattle. More emphasis has been devoted to carotene since cattle rations contain varying amounts of this precursor of vitamin A. Increasing market demands for lightweight cattle have brought about changes in methods of feeding. Cattle are being fattened rapidly at young ages using rations which contain a large amount of concentrates. Such rations are often low in carotene and need vitamin A or carotene supplementation. Recently, several research workers have questioned the adequacy of present recommended vitamin A and …

Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen Jan 1963

Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Greater production and efficiency of management in the livestock industry has increased the need for artificial breeding of farm animals. The solution to the development of artificial insemination in any species depends greatly on being able to preserve the semen for several days with minimum loss in fertilizing capacity. Synchronization of estrus could make swine artificial insemination practical and economical. Four separate experiments were conducted with a total of 176 gilts in an attempt to synchronize estrus and conception in gilts by use of exogenous hormones. The first experiment was conducted with 48 gilts. The two hormones used in this …

A Study Of The Present Physical Education Facilities, Equipment And Curriculum For Seventh And Eighth Grade Girls At Freeman Davis School In Mobridge, South Dakota, And Recommendations For An Improved Program, Betty Ann Shay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Physical education in our schools is perhaps the least standardized of all the various curricula. Mobridge, South Dakota, is a town of approximately 4,400 residents located beside the Missouri River in the north central part of the state. Mobridge is a progressive city and has shown its interest in the physical and social well-being of its citizens. Physical education is an integral and vital part of education. It is necessary to evaluate any existing program of physical education periodically to reexamine the aims and objectives and to make certain that the needs, interests, and abilities of individual students are actually …
