A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Teton Dakota Indians of the northern Great Plains have stirred the imagination of the people in America since they were first encountered by the early explorers. The frontiersmen found them living in the woodlands of the western Great Lakes where they were settled farmers. A century of warfare between the Chippewa and the Dakotas finally came to an end when the former group had occupied the woodland farms of northern Minnesota and the latter had migrated on to the plains. After wandering and fighting as they retreated westward, the Teton Dakotas were gradually transformed from peaceful woodsmen into skilled …

A Social System Analysis Of The Changing Food Practices Of The Teton Dakota Indians, 1800-1900, Norma R. Seerley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food is a necessary element for satisfying a basic need of man. Without it, man could not exist. All of these foods have caloric values and vitamin content, and all are available to the various societies. A society also defines the purpose and emphasis to be given food. It may be a means for stilling hunger or getting nutrition; it may regard eating as a duty or virtue, or as a gustatory pleasure, or even as a social or religious communion. The Dakota’s choice of foods was originally fashioned by the kinds of foods available. Through recordings in history, the …
Genetic Components And Phenotypic Relationships Of Blood Constituents And Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Lowell Lewis Wilson
Genetic Components And Phenotypic Relationships Of Blood Constituents And Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Lowell Lewis Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The production and marketing of meat is the world’s largest agriculturally related industry in terms of employment and gross product value. Thirty-one billion pounds or 30 percent of the total world supply of all types of meats, including poultry products, were consumed in the United States during 1963. Approximately 45 percent of this meat was beef and an additional 2.7 percent was veal. In order to retain the present advantage, all phases of the beef industry must continually search for improvements in production and marketing practices which would reduce the cost per edible unit or increase the quality of the …

The Effect Of Heterosis On Yield Components In Hybrids Of Wheat, Verlin Gene Boeder
The Effect Of Heterosis On Yield Components In Hybrids Of Wheat, Verlin Gene Boeder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Plant hybridizers of the past have found definite increases in yield and vegetative growth of F1 plants intraspecific and interspecific crosses. In more recent times, the successful utilization of hybrid vigor in cross-pollinated crops regulated by sterility systems has stimulated the search for usable sterility systems in cereal grains. In wheat which is self-pollinated, this method of improving yield has recently become possible with discovery of male sterility and fertility restoring mechanisms. It has often been observed that certain varietal or line combinations will produce more desirable progeny than others. Therefore, it is essential that information be obtained on sources …
Laboratory Rearing Of Western Corn Rootworms And Hybridization Of The Western Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica Virgifera) And Northern Corn Rootworm (D. Longicornis) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Ada Mae Hintz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Corn rootworms are beetles of the family Chrysomelidae, genus Diabrotica whose larvae feed on the roots of corn. Large populations of the western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera Leconte, recently developed in Nebraska and surrounding states, thus increasing the economic importance of these insects. Widespread soil insecticide treatments for both species were adopted after 1951 and have become widely accepted. Considering their economic importance, little is recorded about the biology of rootworms. Perhaps this is because they are soil insects. This study was undertaken to provide some of the basic information necessary to research on better methods of control. Members …
Phosphorous Uptake By Oat Seedlings From Phosphorus Fertilizer Applied To A Subsoil As Affected By Soil Moisture, Dean E. Wesley
Phosphorous Uptake By Oat Seedlings From Phosphorus Fertilizer Applied To A Subsoil As Affected By Soil Moisture, Dean E. Wesley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an outgrowth of preliminary investigation by Hovland and Wesley to determine environmental conditions required by plants to establish vegetative cover on highway back slopes. From the nutritional phase of this study it was determined that nitrogen and phosphorus were the only deficient elements in the four exposed subsoils that were investigated. Deficient nutrients are supplied to exposed subsoils by the application of commercial fertilizer. The fertilizer is usually applied on the soil surface and seldom worked more than a few inches down onto the soil. In th Northern Great Plains, this zone of fertilizer placement dries out …

Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports
This fourth annual report of the research program at the Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm is presented herewith. The report has special significance for those engaged in agriculture and the agriculturally related businesses in the nine county area of southeast South Dakota, but it will be useful to many outside the area. The results shown are not necessarily complete nor conclusive. Interpretations given are tentative because additional data resulting from continuation of these experiments may result in conclusions different from those based on any one year.

Swine Housing Research - Southeast Experiment Farm, R.W. Seerley, H.G. Young, J.F. Frederikson
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
The development of the Southeastern Experimental Farm has created the opportunity for studies in swine housing management. Initial steps taken to develop a program were the construction of three temporary structures, which were described in the 1963 Animal Science Mimeo Series. Results of the first summer study (A.S. Mimeo 63 -1) were reported. Daily gains and feed required per pound of gain were approximately the same among pigs on slotted floor, concrete floor with slotted dunging alley and concrete floor with bedding. More labor was required for the conventional concrete floor and sloping floor than was required for the completely …

On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L. J. Kortan
On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L. J. Kortan
SDSU Extension Circulars
In attempts to make selection more effective, swine breeders have become increasingly conscious of the importance of a good swine breeding program and of the part that heredity plays in improving performance and carcass quality. Breeders no longer select breeding stock on the basis of sight alone. Modern selection programs emphasize performance records and carcass cut-out values. This is desirable because research has indicated that visual inspection alone cannot identify animals which are genetically superior. Good feeding and management can result in larger, faster growing litters. However, these improvements in nutrition and management do not become a part of a …

The Carbohydrate Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of Western Hheatgrass At Various Growth Stages As Determined By Leaf Number And Cutting Date, Dennis L. Schentzel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the major factors influencing the nutritional value of grass is stage of maturity. The relationship of lignification to maturity and plant digestibility has been studied extensively. One of the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stage of maturity on hemicellulose content of western wheatgrass and further the content of its component sugars. Western wheat grass is a rhizomatous cool season perennial grass which is very important in South Dakota ranges. Another purpose of this study is to note whether cutting date and leaf number are good measures of the stage of maturity as measured …
