Induction Of Parturition In The Ovine, Ernest L. Harman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The effects of flumethasone and prostaglandin F2 (PGF) on the time of parturition were studied in the ewe. Pregnant ewes with known conception dates were allotted into a 3 x 3 x 2 factorial designed experiment (1973 study) and into a completely random designed experiment (1974 study). In the 1973 study treatments consisted of three hormones (flumethasone, PGF and saline control), three levels (low, .5 mg flumethasone, 5 mg PGF, 1 cc saline; medium, 1.0 mg flumethasone, 10 mg PGF, 2 cc saline; high, 1.5 mg flumethasone, 15 mg PGF, 3 cc saline) and two routes of administration (IM …
Propagation Of Selected Native Prairie Plants By Leaf Tissue Culture, Bernard Erlyn Ellis
Propagation Of Selected Native Prairie Plants By Leaf Tissue Culture, Bernard Erlyn Ellis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Preservation of our native prairie has long been neglected while extensive farming practices have reduced the native prairie to isolated areas of untillable land. These diminishing acres of prairie (Jenkins 1971, Tinker 1971) are our remaining link with the stable environment after man has disrupted the landscape to his advantage. The objective of this investigation was to produce plantlets of selected native prairie plants by leaf tissue culture and to eventually establish them in the field. In doing this it was necessary to study the characteristic of each species in both culture and field behavior. Twenty species were selected for …

Alternative Pasture And Forage Systems, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Alternative Pasture And Forage Systems, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Livestock numbers, feed prices and land prices in South Dakota have been increasing annually, but the number of acres available for production of feed and forage has not. Cattle numbers have passed the 5.5 million mark for the first time in 40 years. Feed costs have doubled and, in some cases, tripled in the last year or so. Livestock prices have not increased materially and the livestock producer is in the biggest cost-price squeeze that he has experienced in many years.
Soil Salinity, Sodium Levels, And Corn Production As Affected By Rates Of Applied Beef Wastes, James L. Halbeisen
Soil Salinity, Sodium Levels, And Corn Production As Affected By Rates Of Applied Beef Wastes, James L. Halbeisen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In order to establish relationships between beef waste application rates on the land and its effect on soil, an experiment was conducted at the Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm. Beef steers were fed to a finished market weight from approximately 200 kg (441 lb) with a typical beef finishing ration which varied only in sodium chloride content among the treatments and spread at various rates on the soil. The objectives of this investigation were: 1) to establish a beef waste application rate on dryland that will permit crop production without excessive salt or sodium accumulation in the soil and 2) …

Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington
Bentonite Or Sodium Bicarbonate In High-Concentrate Lamb Diets, Gerald Bruce Huntington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A rapid change of ruminants from high-roughage diets, often used in background feeding programs, to high-concentrate diets used in the finishing phase tends to promote various digestive tract disorders. A major change in diets gradually made over a period of 3 to 4 weeks generally allows time for the rumen microflora to become adapted to the new conditions and minimizes digestive problems. However, performance during this period is often unsatisfactory. In the short-term feedlot finishing of ruminants for slaughter, the importance of profitable weight gains during the initial adaptation phase of the feeding period becomes relatively more important. Methods of …
Maximizing Reproductive Efficiency In The Cow Herd, W. R. Parker
Maximizing Reproductive Efficiency In The Cow Herd, W. R. Parker
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
Maximum reproductive efficiency in a cow herd will not often be achieved accidentally. Every producer must set for himself a goal of the level of reproductive efficiency that he desires to achieve in his herd. A goal that I believe is realistic for South Dakota cattle producers is to have 95 to 100% of his cow herd calve every 12 months and wean a 500 to 600 pound calf. Whatever the goal is, it seldom will be achieved by chance alone. We can't "hope" a group of heifers into reaching puberty by 14 months of age, we can't hope 95% …
Crop Residue Utilization By Beef Cows, J. A. Minyard
Crop Residue Utilization By Beef Cows, J. A. Minyard
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
Costs associated with beef cow-calf production and particularly the high cost of meeting nutritional requirements of beef cows dictate efficient use of all available feeds. Crop residues can be an important and economical source of feed for beef cows in many South Dakota beef operations. Corn, milo, small grain and soybean residues are those most commonly available.
Effects Of Nutrition On Reproduction And Productivity Of Replacement Heifers, G. H. Deutscher
Effects Of Nutrition On Reproduction And Productivity Of Replacement Heifers, G. H. Deutscher
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
Greater emphasis on production efficiency has stimulated ranchers to look for methods of increasing the production of their herds without increasing cow numbers. Proper development of replacement heifers may be one of the best management practices for improving efficiency of a beef operation. Heifer calves which reach puberty early and conceive early in the breeding season will calve early the following year. They should produce a heavy calf at weaning and should rebreed early with the next calf. If this sequence continues each year, lifetime productivity should reach maximum level. Therefore, efficiency of production in a herd could be improved …
Recent Research Reuslts In Breed Evaluation, D. A. Marshall, C. A. Dinkel
Recent Research Reuslts In Breed Evaluation, D. A. Marshall, C. A. Dinkel
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1975
Crossbreeding offers beef producers opportunities to utilize heterosis in lowly heritable traits and to utilize the benefits of selection in highly heritable traits. Selection benefits can be gained through selection of individual breeding animals on their own performance as well as through selection of breeds to be used in the crossbreeding system on the basis of their highly heritable strong points. Dearborn (1969) summarized available research information for breed comparisons up to that time and his table and references are included in the appendix. The purpose of this paper is to update that report and present results of published experiments …

Some Effects Of Egg Fat, Corn Oil And Lard On Adult Rats, R. A. Nelson, C. W. Carlson
South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1974
Much has been said and written about the American diet and its possible effects on heart disease. There are those who contend that major changes must be made in dietary patterns of the American people, while others say that little evidence is available to link diet with heart disease. Researchers will, agree that it is hard to maintain scientific objectivity when human welfare is considered. Therefore, when conducting research of this nature, the ultimate truth is required.

Sunflowers In South Dakota, H. A. Geise
Sunflowers In South Dakota, H. A. Geise
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Domestic sunflower culture was established in the United States after 1880 following introduction of improved varieties that had been developed in Europe before 1600. The Indians in Virginia were using native variety sunflowers for food in 1586, and in New England sunflower oil was being used as a hair dressing in 1615.
During the early 1900's sunflowers were grown in the Northern Great Plains states and prairie provinces of Canada as a silage crop. Sunflowers as an oilseed crop have been grown commercially in Canada since 1943 and in Minnesota since 1947. Commercial birdfeed production in Minnesota began in 1952. …
