The Effects Of Mental Warm-Up On Jump Shooting Accuracy Among Selected Boys' High School Basketball Players, Thomas J. Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mental practice, as a warm-up activity, on performance in shooting accuracy as measured by success in the execution of a fifteen foot jump shot at an angle of forty-five degrees. A second purpose was to determine whether a relationship existed between the change in shooting accuracy from pre-test to post-test and academic achievement as measured by each subject’s grade point average. The subjects were sophomore and junior members of the Roncalli High School basketball team of Aberdeen, South Dakota. They were divided into two groups through the use of …

Estimate Of Production By A Population Of Fathead Minnows, Pimpephales Promelas, In A South Dakota Prairie Wetland, Ronald D. Payer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Estimates of production and population densities were obtained for an autochthonous population of fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, in a South Dakota prairie wetland. The study was conducted from May to September of 1976. Population estimates were obtained using a Schnabel-type mark and recapture model. Fish were marked either by fin clipping or granular fluorescent pigments driven into the dermal tissue. Production estimates were derived both arithmetically and graphically. The estimated population of adult fathead minnows declined from 194 in May and June to 26 in July. Production by adults was estimated at 0.10 kg, or 0.0007 gm/m²/yr. The population …

The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen Jan 1977

The Relationship Between Soil Test And Small Grain Response To P Fertilization In South Dakota Field Experiments, Paul Elias Fixen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Phosphorus is one of the two most limiting nutrients to crop production in South Dakota. Because of this fact, many recommendations for P fertilizer are made each day by the South Dakota State University Soil Test Lab. Nearly 65,000 tons of available O are marketed each year in South Dakota as commercial fertilizer. This amounts to over 18 million dollars or expense for South Dakota farmers. Therefore, it becomes essential that recommendations for phosphorus fertilizer be as accurate as our knowledge of the soil-plant system allows. Those recommendations are currently based on the results of the Modified Bray 1, 1:7 …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Like all mushrooms, the morel mushroom is a fungus. Morels are the fruiting bodies produced by members of the genus, Morchella, Morels are often considered to be a class with truffles by mushroom hunters. Unlike other mushrooms, the morel is not toadstool shaped, but looks like a sponge on a stalk, this makes it easy to identify. There are no poisonous mushrooms that resemble morels. Morels are widely distributed. Morels are known to occur in North America, Europe, and Israel. They are found in a wide variety of topographies, from mountains to plains. They can be found on grasslands, orchards, …

Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn Jan 1977

Inheritance Of Regrowth And Other Characters In Smooth Bromegrass, Geprge Lance Holborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Land utilization is becoming increasingly important; farmers and ranchers are continually striving to produce more from production sites and to realize some production from their presently non-productive areas. Progress in this direction must be forthcoming in all areas of agriculture. In the case of cool-season grass species, growth takes place in the spring and fall of the year. With the exceptions of the cool-season grass species, orchardgrass, Dactylis glomerata L., little if any mid-summer growth is produced. Orchardgrass, however, is not winter-hardy or very productive under dryland conditions in South Dakota. Currently, there are no cool-season grass varieties recommended to …

Effect Of Type Of Birth, Breed Of Sire And Postweaning Nutrition On Ewe Lambs. Ii. Production At 12 Months Age, A. L. Slyter, D. Morris, D. G. Levis

South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977

The practice of breeding ewes to lamb at 12 months of age has not been widely accepted by commercial operators, even though previous research has indicated that it can be done successfully in some management systems. One reason for this might be that long-term effects on lifetime productivity have not been evaluated. This paper summarizes production performance during the first year of a lifetime study currently in progress. Data from 382 Suffolk Targhee and Targhee ewes born in 1971-1975 and developed under two different nutritional levels are included in this report. Subsequent lifetime production for these ewes will be reported …

Rumesin For Growing And Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry Nov 1976

Rumesin For Growing And Finishing Cattle, L. B. Embry

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Much of the research with feedlot cattle has been devoted to studies of ways to improve feed utilization. A large portion of feed energy, and also protein, available to the ruminant results from microbial fermentation in the rumen, or rumen-reticulum. Environmental conditions maintained in the rumen are important in the rate of fermentation and the resulting end-products. Numerous experiments have shown that volatile fatty acids (VFA)--major ones being acetic, propionic and butyric produced by microbial fermentation in the rumen play major roles in energy metabolism of ruminants.

Utilization Of Crop Residues And Highly Lignified Waste Products In Wintering Rations For Beef Cows, L. D. Kamstra Nov 1976

Utilization Of Crop Residues And Highly Lignified Waste Products In Wintering Rations For Beef Cows, L. D. Kamstra

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Although residues and waste fiber can be fed in many types of ruminant rations at low levels as a replacement for the forage, greater usage can probably be found in maintenance or wintering rations. A crop residue or waste material is no better than its available nutrient composition. How closely this nutrient composition will meet the requirement of animals determines how the material can be used and what supplemental feeds are required. The nutrient requirement of 1,100 lb. dry pregnancy mature cows in the middle third of pregnancy could be used as a basis for requirements for a maintenance or …

Aspen Material As A Feed Ingredient In Ruminant Rations, L. D. Kamstra, M. Singh, L. B. Embry, L. Peterson Nov 1976

Aspen Material As A Feed Ingredient In Ruminant Rations, L. D. Kamstra, M. Singh, L. B. Embry, L. Peterson

South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1976

Aspen (Populus tremuloides), covering in excess of 58,000 acres in the Black Hills area and over 3 million acres in the Upper Great Lakes area, has not been harvested in sufficient amounts to perpetuate growth. Periodic harvesting is not only necessary to assure an aspen stand but younger trees are needed as a source of food for grouse, deer and other wildlife. Although aspen serves as a source of fiber for paper, lumber, insulation and other industrial uses, it is presently not used for these purposes in the Black Hills region. In all regions where aspen grows whether or not …

Crafty Carp Cookery, D. Deethardt Nov 1976

Crafty Carp Cookery, D. Deethardt

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

A study has been made on the acceptability of carp meat from several eastern South Dakota lakes and the Oahe Reservoir on the Missouri River. It was evident from this study that carp from these sources were acceptable for human consumption (1.).
The nutritive value of fresh-water fish varies somewhat depending on the season of the year, geographical area of capture, size and sex of the fish, feeding habits and other factors. For this reason, only approximate nutrient values can he given for carp.
In the experiments conducted by home economists of the Agricultural Experiment Station at South Dakota State …
