Bovine Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma : In Vitro Investigations Of A Viral Etiology, Mary A. Anson Jan 1976

Bovine Ocular Squamous Cell Carcinoma : In Vitro Investigations Of A Viral Etiology, Mary A. Anson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma, commonly known as cancer eye, is a common and economically important problem to the U.S. cattle industry. This neoplasm is particularly significant in aged breeding stock. The tumor usually originates from the squamous epithelial cells of the corneal-scleral junction and the nicitating membrane of the eye. Eye cancer lesions progress from small pin point plaques to large tumors involving the eye and surrounding tissue. This disease causes parital or total loss of vision in the affected eye and the cancer may metastasize. The objectives of this research were to: investigate the properties of tumor cell …

Compositional And Metabolic Evaluation Of Colostrum Preserved By Four Methods During Warm Ambient Temperatures, Susan Mary Annexstad Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A study of giant Canada geese (Branta Canadensis maxima) nesting on stock ponds in western South Dakota was conducted during 1974 and 1975. Analysis of 10 selected variables at nests on natural sites indicated that distance of water below high water level and percent slope from wetland to horizon, contributed the most to the use of the site. Distance from wetland to horizon and disturbance factors were two important variable measured to determine use of artificial nesting structures. First nests were initiated on 1 April 1974 and 8 April 1975. Twenty-five nests (16 percent) were located on artificial nesting structures, …

Building Geometry And Wind Effects On Model Open-Front Building Ventilation, Anthony J. Koenig Jan 1976

Building Geometry And Wind Effects On Model Open-Front Building Ventilation, Anthony J. Koenig

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many variations of building geometries and natural ventilation designs are currently being produced and marketed for cold confinement beef structures. Since these buildings are widely used and ventilation problems are evident, research was conducted with the following objectives: 1. Determine the effect of model configuration, wild direction and ventilation panel opening on ventilation characteristics (ridge vent flow and temperature difference) in three model, open-front beef buildings. 2. Develop prediction equations for the relationships between ventilation characteristics and climatic conditions. 3 Compare ventilation system performance in three, open-front model buildings.

The Nutritive Value Of High Protein Oats, Double Mutant, Waxy, Opaque-2 And Normal Corns In Pig Starter Diets, Steven L. Robbins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The value of the mutant corns has been demonstrated in their ability to support superior performance of animals consuming them and in the need for less supplemental protein in diets containing he corns. Research conducted at South Dakota University showed that oats can constitute 60% of the grain portion of growing and finishing swine diets with less supplemental protein and no reduction in pig performance. The purpose of the research reported herein was to study the value of high protein oats in pig starter diets as well as availability of lysine in the grain. The inclusion of opaque-2, double mutant …

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee Jan 1976

A Study Of Milk Composition In South Dakota, Jeng-Jung Yee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The composition of cow's milk, including both the fat and solids-not-fat (SNF) content, is known to vary over rather broad ranges. Breed and individuality of the cow are the major factors influencing this, but many other factors are known to exert their influence. However, it has generally been observed that compensation or complementing occurs when the milk of cows is mixed together; so that the composition of milk from a herd will tend toward averages or norms. This effect usually is even more marked as the milk from two or more herds is commingled. Payment for milk on the basis …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Easter lily, L. longiflorum Thunb. Is known not only for its ornamental value, but also for its large chromosomes, making it ideal cytological material. Big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii Vitman, is a South Dakota native grass. It possesses many desirable characteristics and unique adaptations to this region. This research has primarily dealt with the development of methods for cloning the species L. longiflorum and A. gerardii by tissue culture of leaf and/or floral parts. The pattern of plantlet differentiation from the cultures was also histologically studied.

Purine-Thiamine Anabolism During Cellular Morphogenesis In Myxococcus Xanthus, Wen-Cherng Tsai Jan 1976

Purine-Thiamine Anabolism During Cellular Morphogenesis In Myxococcus Xanthus, Wen-Cherng Tsai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purine-thiamine anabolism during cellular morphogenesis in Myxococcus xanthus was investigated. One of the approaches was to test vegetative and myxospore (2.5 h and 8 h) extracts of M. xanthus CW-2 for their ability to synthesize the second de novo intermediate, 5'-phosphoribosylglycinamide, from beginning precursors either by way of phosphoribosyl-pyrophosphate amidotransferase (EC 2.4.2.14) or ribose-5-phosphate aminotransferase. Results indicate the presence of both the amido- and aminotransferases in both types of extracts, and both enzymes appear to be present at about the same level (per milligram of protein) in vegetative cells, myxospores (2.5 h and 8 h), and in a bacterial prototype, …

Growth, Reproduction And Blood Characteristics Of Hereford Females, Harold R. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this experiment was to measure the effects of level of wintering nutrition and pasture treatment upon growth and reproduction of Hereford heifers from weaning to 4 1/2 years of age. Levels of certain blood constituents were determined at periodic intervals throughout the study as additional indicators of adequacy in intake for some major nutrients and for measures of general health of the animals. Data pertaining to weight and feed are reported in the English system, even though the metric system was used in the Review of Literature section. This was considered desirable in view of present common …

Intake And Digestibility Of Brown-Midrib Corn Silage By Lactating Dairy Cows, James Allen Rook

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two short-term trials evaluated brown-midrib-3 (bm3) mutant (low lignin) corn silage for early lactation Holstein cows. In trial 1, five cows per group were individually fed a ration of silage and grain (60:40 ratio, dry matter basis) from week 2 through 8 of lactation. Lignin percentages for bm3 and normal silages were 4.9 and 6.4. Cattle fed the bm3 ration consumed 19% more total dry matter as percent of body weight than cows fed normal. Digestibilities of dry matter, cell-wall contents, acid detergent fiber, and energy were 3 to percentage units higher for the bm3 …

Protein Levels In Diets Of Sows During Gestation And Lactation, George W. Libal, Richard W. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1975

Research conducted during the past several years has shown that dietary protein could be reduced in gestation diets without affecting number or size of pigs farrowed. A limited amount of research has also indicated that the protein requirement during lactation may not be as great as previously recommended. However, data are limited on the long time effects during successive reproductive periods, particularly when low protein diets are fed during both the gestation and lactation periods. The North Central Swine Nutrition Research Committee agreed that this was an area where more information was needed and a cooperative project was initiated to …

Moldy Feed - Good Or Bad, George Semeniuk, C. W. Carlson Nov 1975

Moldy Feed - Good Or Bad, George Semeniuk, C. W. Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1975

Molds develop in feed in response to the nourishment they get from the feed. They develop only in the presence of air and as the result of favorable moisture conditions, which must be above a relative water vapor pressure equivalence of 65 to 70%. They develop very slowly at near-freezing temperatures and rapidly as temperatures rise. By enzyme action, they convert the energy components of the feed (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) into their own body structure with loss to the air mainly of metabolically-generated heat, water, carbon dioxide, ammonia and of fragments of their body as spores. They may or …
