Interrelationships Of Mercury, Selenium And Arsenic In Broiler Diets, R. J. Emerick, J. C. Chern, I. S. Palmer, R. A. Nelson
South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
In previous reports from the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (A.S. Series 73-18, 74-19 and 75-37), the effects of methylmercury on growth, egg production and egg hatchability were documented for Leghorn-type hens. In these studies, methylmercury at levels up to 10 p.p.m. of the diet had no effect upon growth but reduced egg production, egg quality and hatchability. Selenium was shown to be partially effective in overcoming these detrimental effects of mercury. On the other hand, an arsenic-selenium interaction is known to exist and many of the environmental segments providing mercury also contain elevated levels of arsenic. Studies described below …

A System Of Predicting The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Cattle, Danny G. Fox, J. Roy Black, Gerry L. Kuhl
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
The CNES framework needs further generalization since it was developed using average frame size British breed cattle receiving a growth stimulant and fed in a thermal neutral environment. The objective of this paper is to generalize the CNES by using suitable adjustment factors to take into account alternative frame sizes, breeds, sexes and ages, varied body conditions due to previous nutritional treatment, the use of various growth stimulants and feed additives, the associative effects of feedstuffs and various environments. The physiological effects of these factors are estimated using results from a variety of experiments. Dry matter intake equations are described, …

Utilization Of Aspen Trees As Ruminant Feed Component, L. D. Kamstra, M. Singh, J. Sharps
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
When traditional roughages are in short supply or high in price, other fibrous feed sources for ruminants should be considered if available at a competitive price. One such fibrous material shown to have potential as a ruminant feed is the aspen tree (Populus tremuloids Michx.) harvested in its entire form to include bark, leaves and trunk. The aspen tree is the most widespread tree species in North America and the least utilized. Estimates exceed 6 million acres of mature trees in an area which would include the Black Hills (58,000 acres), the Great Lakes region and the Rock Mountain region. …
Composition Of South Dakota Silages, A. W. Halverson
Composition Of South Dakota Silages, A. W. Halverson
South Dakota Cattle Feeders Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
Questions are sometimes raised about the nutritional quality of silages which are harvested and put up in South Dakota. Therefore, chemical data on 1973-75 samples from throughout South Dakota were averaged and subjected to statistical treatment by the coefficient of variation methods. Comparisons were made with United States values on similar feed as reported in the Atlas of Nutritional Data on United States and Canadian Feeds and published by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS, 1971). Total digestible nutrient values (TDN's) were calculated on the South Dakota feeds by use of the digestion coefficients listed in the NAS (1971) reference.

Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Feeding Brood Sows, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Pregestation, gestation, and lactation are critical periods in swine nutrition. Work at many experiment stations has shown that sows will produce larger litters if their energy intake is limited during gestation than if they are allowed access to a self feeder. In the gestation period, weight gains must be controlled, because over-fatness often decreases litter size, besides increasing feed costs. In the nursing period, plentiful milk production requires liberal feeding; however, there is evidence that milk production is to some extent related to the number of nursing pigs. It would appear reasonable to feed the lactating sow on the basis …

A research project was initiated in the fall of 1970 to evaluate the effect of breed of sire, level of postweaning nutrition, age at first breeding and type of birth on subsequent reproductive performance of the ewe. Data from the growth phase of lambs produced in this study from 1971 through 1975 are presented in this report .
Opportunities With Sheep In South Dakota, Vern Fritz
Opportunities With Sheep In South Dakota, Vern Fritz
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
The question is often asked of me, "What's your future with your industry?" I normally reply, "It'll be whatever I make of it--no better and no worse." It appears that the opportunities with sheep in South Dakota would follow the same pattern--whatever we are willing to make of them!

Methods Of Supplementing Carotene And Vitamin A To Vitamin A-Depleted Sheep, R. M. Luther, L. B. Embry, D. F. Samuel, L. F. Bush
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1977
The primary objective of these experiments was to study the effectiveness of different methods of supplementing vitamin A to vitamin A-depleted lambs as measured by growth, blood plasma levels and liver stores of vitamin A. The second objective was to determine effect of oral and injection methods of carotene administration on subsequent vitamin levels in blood plasma, liver, heart and kidney tissue. Responses were monitored over a period of about 4 weeks.
Sodium Bentonite, Sodium Bicarbonate And Limestone Supplementation In High-Concentrate Diets For Ruminants, Barry Howard Dunn
Sodium Bentonite, Sodium Bicarbonate And Limestone Supplementation In High-Concentrate Diets For Ruminants, Barry Howard Dunn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the past several years, there has been increased interest in what has been referred to by some as the two-phase feeding of ruminants. This includes backgrounding, when animals are fed diets high in roughage during a growing period, followed by high-grain feeding during a relatively short finishing period. An interim period of grain adaptation, usually 2 to 3 weeks in length, is necessary in this feeding system to avoid the deleterious effects of the rumen acidosis associated with abrupt changes from predominantly roughage diets to high-grain diets. Feedlot performance during this adaptation phase is generally lower than desired. The …
Lysine-Energy Relationships In Corn-Soybean Meal Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, James L. Girard
Lysine-Energy Relationships In Corn-Soybean Meal Diets For Growing And Finishing Swine, James L. Girard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increasing feed costs in recent years have led researcher and producers to look to different sources for their feedstuffs. Many by-products of various industries have been studied to determine their potential as livestock feeds. One product that has been used to spare feed grains in the diet by increasing the total dietary energy and increasing feed efficiency. The amino acid lysine represents another opportunity to decrease food costs of swine diets when protein supplementation is costly. Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most practical swine diets. The addition of lysine has proven effective in diets adequate in other …
In Vitro Analysis Of Pre- And Early Postimplantation Development Of Lethal Yellow (Ay/Ay) Mouse Embryos, Linda L. Johnson
In Vitro Analysis Of Pre- And Early Postimplantation Development Of Lethal Yellow (Ay/Ay) Mouse Embryos, Linda L. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The dominant AY gene of the agouti locus (linkage group V) in the house mouse (Muse musculus) is one of approximately eleven alleles specifying coat color. Homozygosity of the AY allele is thought to cause death of the embryo in utero around the time of implantation. For this reason the AY/AY genotype is called the lethal yellow mouse. The precise time that the primary gene defect is first expressed is not known. Attempts to pinpoint the phenocritical period in an effort to discover the basic biochemical alteration specified by the lethal gene have thus far …
