Fatty Liver Disease And Different Grains, Chandi C. Rakshit, C. Wendell Carlson Nov 1984

Fatty Liver Disease And Different Grains, Chandi C. Rakshit, C. Wendell Carlson

South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1984

The definite cause of fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) is still not certain. However, after several studies at this center we can say that the etiology is in part related to nutrition and metabolism as certain dietary ingredients have been shown to have some protective action against the disease (see A.S. Series 76-1, 77-27, 78-5, 79-24, 80-4, 81-5 and 83- 13).
The present experiment was conducted to study the effect of distiller's dried grain (DDG), oats and a mixture of both in layer diets on FLHS. FLHS was experimentally created by force feeding at 120% of the normal intake.

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler Mar 1984

The Effect Of Varying Lysine Levels In Starter Diets On Pig Performance And On Subsequent Performance And Carcass Characteristics, Robert C. Thaler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Lysine is the first limiting amino acid in most cereal-based diets for swine. Thus, in cereal-based diets the lysine- requirement must be met first if the pig's protein anabolism is to be efficient and maximal. The most widely used diet in the swine industry today is the corn-soybean meal diet. Corn is deficient in lysine, but soybean meal is a relatively good source of lysine, so soybean. meal is added to the corn base to increase the diet's lysine content. Synthetic lysine also can be added to corn-soybean meal diets to increase lysine content or added as a replacement for …

S.I. Hayakawa And The Use Of Danger Indicators Of General Semantics, Janine Rae Rudnick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many books and articles have been written about general semantics and specific phrases included in general semantics study. The books generally have a theme of the meaning of words. Very few books or articles, however, have stressed the importance of J. Samuel Bois' danger indicators as part of the meaning of words. "Ego statements" 11 and "either or" 12 indicators have been touched upon in books and articles, but no one has dedicated significant study to the specific danger indicators as presented by Bois. It is this writer's belief that the danger indicators of general semantics should be studied more …

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber Jan 1984

Effects Of Dietary Dehydroepiandrosterone (Dhea) On Body Weight, Food Consumption, And Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6phd) Activity In Lethal Yellow (Ay/Aw) And White-Bellied Agouti (Aw/Aw) Mice (Strain 129/Sv), Lisa Deette Staber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a non-competitive inhibitor in vitro of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), the rate controlling enzyme in the pentose-phosphate shunt. This pathway produces NADPH, a necessary co-factor for the synthesis of fatty acids and ribo- and deoxyribonucleotides. Some researchers believe that by decreasing G6PDH activity, DHEA produces an anti-obesity and anticarcinogenic effect in laboratory mice and rats genetically inclined toward obesity and cancer. It is DHEA's anti-obesity effect which lends it to the study of the yellow obese (AY/-) mouse with its peculiar pleiotropic syndrome. Yellow obese AY/AW mice were found to be more susceptible to dietary DHEA's effects than …
