Forage Potential Of Some Annual Native Trifolium Species In The Ethiopian Highlands, Levi Mudogog Shadeya Akundabweni
Forage Potential Of Some Annual Native Trifolium Species In The Ethiopian Highlands, Levi Mudogog Shadeya Akundabweni
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As initial testing, this research aimed to screen, describe and evaluate annul native clovers as potential forages. Pure clover stands were studied at three Ethiopian highland locations with introduced species used for comparison (checks). Intraspecific differences in T. tembense were studied as a spaced plant. Interspecific differences were evaluated with and without added phosphate on: dry matter yields at different harvest times, self-reseeding, seed yields, leaf tissue mineral contents, proportions of plant organs, and forage quality. Yields of clovers sown during short (SR) and long rainy seasons (LR) were compared. Native clovers performed significantly better than checks. Screening was best …
The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm
The Economic Feasibility Of Small Scale Cooperatively Organized Fuel Alcohol Production In Eastern South Dakota, Daryl Arthur Brehm
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research on the economic feasibility of a cooperatively organized small-scale fuel alcohol plant is justified for several reasons. Policy makers could consult the results of this study as an aid in making decisions about public subsidies for fuel alcohol production. Investors concerned about the wisdom of allocating capital to this type of fuel alcohol production facility are also potential beneficiaries of this research. Perhaps most importantly, this information would be valuable to farmers in eastern South Dakota. Alcohol plants organized on a cooperative basis could reduce the individual financial risk of farmers involved--by spreading commitments among all the cooperative's members. …
Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson
Effects Of Anabolic Implants And Breed Group On Carcass Traits And Palatability Characteristics Of Bullock Beef, Roger C. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The ultimate goal of the beef industry is efficient production of beef that satisfies the consumer and increases demand. In the past, American producers have been primarily interested in the production of high quality beef because consumers were concerned with meat palatability, particularly tenderness. However, due to current diet-health issues and economic conditions, American consumers have come to expect acceptable palatability and are now more concerned with the nutrient density and cost of their meat purchases. Maximum production efficiency must be realized to keep beef competitive with other protein sources for consumer dollars. Production systems must be used that are …
Information Needs And Sources Of The South Dakota Horticulture Industry, Iris (Friedrichsen) Thoreson
Information Needs And Sources Of The South Dakota Horticulture Industry, Iris (Friedrichsen) Thoreson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Information is needed by horticulturists in areas such as chemical use and application, plant diseases and insects, cultural practices, and marketing techniques. Horticulturists can use a variety of sources to get the information they need. They can use printed material, radio or television, and personal sources. The individuals or groups wanting to communicate with horticulturists need to be aware of the kinds of information needed by the horticulturists and the sources used by them. A computer search of current literature disclosed limited findings on the information gathering processes used by commercial horticulturists. However, researchers have studied information gathering processes in …
Bull Behavior And Pregnancy Rates, R. J. Pruitt
Bull Behavior And Pregnancy Rates, R. J. Pruitt
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1984
Successful reproductive management of the beef cow herd includes having a high percentage of cows calving during the first 21 days of the calving season as well as a high percentage of cows calving. Nutrition, herd health , crossbreeding systems and evaluation of bulls for reproduction potential are all management areas that need attention in attaining these goals. Current guidelines for evaluating the reproductive potential of bulls include a 'physical exam, measuring scrotal circumference and evaluating semen (Breeding Soundness Exam , Society for Theriogenology). When conducted by an experienced person , these are relatively simple procedures that should be considered …

The Effects Of Calcium Hydroxide Treatment Of Sunflower Seeds On Ration Digestibility And Rumen Parameters In Holstein Steers, Ann C. Spearow
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Digestibilities of rations containing 10% (dry matter basis) oil-type, rolled sunflower seeds treated with three levels- of calcium hydroxide were compared using .a randomized complete block design. Forty-eight Holstein steers were fed one of six completely mixed rations consisting of (DM basis) 44% corn silage, 10% chopped alfalfa hay, and 46% concentrate mix. Concentrate mixes contained: CSM = control; SCS =control+ 22% sunflower seeds; SCL = SCS + 3.5% additional limestone; SCH2, SCH4, and SCH8 = SCS + 2, 4, and 8% calcium hydroxide (% sunflower seed DM), respectively. Total rations were isonitrogeneous at approximately 16% crude protein and isocaloric …
Evaluation Of Three Rations On Growth And Reproductive Performance For Replacement Heifers, L. B. Bruce, H. L. Miller
Evaluation Of Three Rations On Growth And Reproductive Performance For Replacement Heifers, L. B. Bruce, H. L. Miller
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1984
Nutrition following weaning of replacement heifers affects their performance as cows. Low levels of energy can delay puberty and reduce conception rates. Excessively high levels can decrease milk production and life span. Previous research indicates that gains should be kept to about 220 pounds from weaning to first breeding. This level of gain precludes high concentrate rations, curtailing flexibility and ability to minimize feed costs when concentrates are a cheaper source of energy. Limiting feed intake to supply desired total energy consumption would allow flexibility and use of higher percentage grain when economical. Limit feeding has been studied with finishing …
Cow Efficiency Update, C. A. Dinkel
Cow Efficiency Update, C. A. Dinkel
South Dakota Cow-Calf Field Day Proceedings, 1984
No important differences have been found between breed groups and no effect of cow size on cow efficiency has been detected. These results appear to be in agreement with other published reports dealing with cow size and breed differences where (1) the annual energy intake for the cow and calf has been measured, (2) the output resulting from net energy input has been measured, and (3) the cow has been fed sufficient energy to maintain reproduction. These experiments have been conducted in environments from Texas to Canada and with a variety of methods used to determine intake level of the …

The project includes visual slides, accompanying cassette tape, written narrative with corresponding information on the concepts presented in the slides, and a …
Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng
Pesticide-Pesticide Interaction In Organophosphorus Insecticide Degradation, Peter E. Cheng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The widespread use of pesticides during the last two decades has played an important role in the development of today's agricultural system and is one of the major topics of modern science. It is also expected to assist in meeting the nutritional needs of the rapidly expanding populations in the world. The organophosphorus insecticides are among the most toxic pesticides employed for agricultural pest control. However, organophosphorus insecticides are usually rapidly degraded and eliminated. There has been a great amount of study on the chemical, microbial, and physical factors affecting degradation of organophosphorus insecticides, but degradation pathways and behavior have …

Further Studies On Fatty Liver Hemorrhagic Syndrome, Chandi C. Rakshit, C. W. Carlson
South Dakota Poultry Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1983
Fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome (FLHS) has been one of the major problems in the poultry industry. Although we are not sure of the cause, we can say that nutrition plays an important role in that some dietary ingredients have reduced the incidence of FLHS in previous experiments at this research center (see A.S. Series 76-1, 77-27, 78-5, 79-24, POULTRY 80-4 and 81-5).
A further experiment was conducted to ascertain the effect of different levels of fat additions as well as oats on FLHS.

Swine Marketing In South Dakota: Results Of A Producer Survey, Larry Janssen, Kevin K. Weischedel
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
South Dakota is one of the top 10 hog production states with about 3 m111ion hogs and pigs marketed and 3.2 million hogs slaughtered in the state each year. This totals 3-4 percent of the nation's hog supply. With ample supplies of available land, labor, and feed grain there is considerable potential for further growth of the South Dakota pork industry if the expansion can be based on profitable production and marketing prospects for producers. In 1980, a pork marketing study was initiated by SDSU to obtain current infonnation on: 1) Organization of hog production and marketing in South Dakota, …
