The Effect Of Various Proteins And Amino Acids On Salenium Toxicity To Rats Fed Corn-Based Or Wheat-Based Diets, Ailene Annette Herr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Selenium occurs in the earth's crust in varying concentrations. It is crystallochemically related to sulfur, and sulfide ores frequently contain selenium. The commercial production of selenium is usually as a by-product of other mining operations, especially copper mining. It occurs in different oxidation states depending on the pH of the soils. At acidic pHs the predominate form is selenite. That present as selenite is bound to a high degree by iron colloids in soils and is thus not readily absorbed by plants. Once taken up by plants selenium becomes, to varying degrees, available to animals. Selenium can be either harmful …

Economic Feasibility Of Producing Fuel Alcohol From Fodder Beets In A Small-Scale Plant, Mohamed K. Habash

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Oil is the principal energy form in all the major developed countries. Most nations domestically produce only trivial quantities. For most of these countries, the energy requirements are met predominantly by oil imports. The Arab oil embargo of October 1973 caused a dramatic jump in the real price of oil. Oil markets were further shocked in 1979 by the Iranian political crisis. Since the beginning of this instability in the world petroleum market, an extremely high level of public concern for liquid fuel energy sources has been created. Farmers have been hit hard by the increases in fuel costs; these …

Effects Of Breed Of Ewe And Management System On The Lifetime Production Of Lamb And Wool, Wayne Joseph Busch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sheep production in the United States is highly variable. The sources of this variation are many and may include breed, climatic condition, management system and selection emphasis. The sheep is a highly adaptable animal and the success of an operation may be due in part to the ability of producers to select breeds of sheep best suited to their situation. Over time, two distinct management systems have developed. The first of these may be termed the farm flock system. The farm flock system is typical of the eastern United States in the crop farming areas of the country. This system …

Tryptophan And Threonine Requirements Of Pigs Fed A Low-Protein, Corn-Sunflower Meal Diet, Barton S. Borg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The ultimate goal of the pork industry is efficient production of quality pork for the least monetary investment. Most swine diets are formulated using feedstuffs which supply 100% natural protein. Different protein sources differ in their amino acid content and availability. For example, soybean meal has been shown to contain more lysine than sunflower meal and the lysine in soybean meal is more available to the pig than that of sunflower meal. Protein sources which supply the correct balance of available amino acids relative to the needs of the animal are considered as being protein sources of the highest monetary …

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Dietary Intake Of College Students, Elizabeth Ann Pond Jan 1985

The Effect Of Nutrition Education On The Dietary Intake Of College Students, Elizabeth Ann Pond

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to Guthrie, nutrition professionals are especially concerned about the food habits of adolescents. Dietary inadequacies are higher during adolescence than at any other stage of the life cycle. Deficiencies in this age range can have fat reaching effects, especially for females. Female adolescent nutritive needs are surpassed only by those during pregnancy and lactation. The adolescent who becomes pregnant before growth is complete is of particular concern. If nutritive intake is inadequate before conception the adolescent and her unborn child are at high risk. Another nutritionally related concern in adolescence is the increased incidence of eating disorders such as …

Lungworm Infections, Reproduction And Summer Habitat Use Of Bighorn Sheep In Custer State Park, South Dakota, Gary C. Brundige

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) were once indigenous to the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. When European settlers moved into this region during the late 1800' s, market hunting, loss of habitat, and introduction of animal diseases and parasites caused the subspecies of the region, the Audubon's bighorn sheep (O. c. auduboni), to become extinct by 1916 (Buechner 1960). To reestablish bighorn sheep in the Black Hills, 8 Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep (O. c. canadensis) were introduced into the former range of the Audubon's sheep in 1922. Finding the habitat to be very suitable, this small population increased to …

Mold contamination of processed food and its raw ingredients is a major concern in agriculture. Although at one time mold contamination of cheese and other foods was considered to be of little conse9uence, discovery of carcinogenic and/or teratogenic toxins (73) produced by molds commonly associated with food has changed this innocuous and frequent inconvenience into a serious health consideration. The presence of mold on or in cheese is a common occurrence, indeed, many cheeses depend upon molds to provide characteristic cheese flavor and texture. Cheeses such as blue, Roquefort, Camembert, and Brie are ripened under controlled conditions by species of …
