Influence Of Gestation Energy On Large White X Landrace Sow Productivity, M. K. Hoppe, G. W. Libal, R. C. Wahlstrom

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985

Production remains extremely important in our swine industry today. In the past 5-10 years, there has been an increase in the usage of white breeds in swine herds. The white or mother breeds are noted for their increased productivity; however, a question has stirred as to the feeding regime of these productive females. This question is important as feed costs are the major portion of operating expenses for the hog producers. Little controlled research has been conducted in the United States to establish the caloric intake requirement of the white sows during gestation. The National Research Council (NRC, 1979) lists …

Nutrient Analysis Of South Dakota Swine Feeds, C. Ross Hamilton

South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1985

Current economical conditions-have forced swine producers to utilize available resources efficiently to reduce production cost. A major portion of the production cost in most swine enterprises may be attributed to obtaining, handling and processing feeds. Grains are utilized as a source of dietary energy and constitute a major portion of swine diets. Thus, the practice of evaluating all feed grains available in a given geographic area to determine the grains providing the most economical gains other than feeding only those grains raised by the individual producer is expected to increase. Producers must understand how grains differ in their nutritional and …

Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier Apr 1985

Effects Of Various Dietary Salt Additions On Silica Urolithiasis In Male Rats, Carl J. Schreier

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Urinary calculi composed primarily of silica have been identified in range animals by several researchers. Silica calculi have also been found in dogs, humans, rats and guinea pigs. Forman et al conducted a detailed analysis of calculi. They found.that ashing at temperatures of 1500 C decreased calculi weight by 20%. Silica and calcium were shown to make up most of the remaining mineral content. Calculi from grazing ruminants in western Australia contained Si02, but further analysis showed that they were a mixture of substances. Mcintosh found that of the calculi analyzed 47% contained weddelite (Calcium oxalate.H20) and opaline silica, 13% …

Ozonation And Manganese Greensand Filtration For Iron And Manganese Removal From A Municipal Groundwater Supply, Cary Pieterick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Stoebner and Schjodt both used a pilot plant which treated raw water with ozone gas for the oxidation of iron am manganese and then passed the treated water through an anthracite coal filter. Both agree that the degree of iron and manganese oxidation was greatly affected by changes in ozone dosage but was not greatly affected by changes in detention time. Both also experienced limited filter runs between backwashing because of iron and manganese breakthrough in the filter effluent. Kirscherman used a pilot plant that involved aeration, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) treatment, basin detention, and filtration through a dual media (manganese …

The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman Mar 1985

The Effect Of Photoperiod, Ergocryptine Injection And Melatonin Feeding On Reproduction In The Ewe, Cindie Marie Luhman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the most intriguing aspects of reproduction is the reversible fertility governing seasonal breeding. Sheep are one of the many species that exhibit a circannual rhythm in reproduction, because they start estrous cycles in fall and winter months and become anestrus in spring and summer months. Seasonal changes appear to control this. Ewes seem to be more completely seasonal than are rams because only very limited ovarian activity, fewer follicles, and no ovulation occurs in ewes, although follicular size remains unchanged. Most rams will produce viable semen throughout all seasons, however, Lincoln and Short and Almeida and Lincoln reported …

A Comparison Of Type Of Birth, Breed Of Sire, Postweaning Nutrition, And Age Of First Breeding On Lifetime Lamb And Wool Production In Range Ewes, Steven M. Kappes Mar 1985

A Comparison Of Type Of Birth, Breed Of Sire, Postweaning Nutrition, And Age Of First Breeding On Lifetime Lamb And Wool Production In Range Ewes, Steven M. Kappes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Due to present economic pressures, sheep producers must utilize every management tool in the most profitable manner. Therefore, many traditional practices must be reevaluated. Research has indicated that some possible areas to improve lamb and wool production are in the use of crossbred ewes, breeding ewes to lamb at 1 yr. of age, feeding a high level of postweaning nutrition, and selection for twins, lamb production, wool production, longevity, and lifetime production. Research is usually performed at experiment stations where the conditions are not typical of those found for commercial operations and therefore may affect the application of the results. …

The Relationship Between Obesity And Fertility In The Lethal Yellow Mouse (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Kim William Jeppesen Mar 1985

The Relationship Between Obesity And Fertility In The Lethal Yellow Mouse (Ay/A; C57bl/6j), Kim William Jeppesen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The lethal yellow gene, (Ay) is a genetic mutation in mice which causes a number of defects. First described in 1905 by Cuenot, the Ay/- mouse has been the subject of one hundred or more studies. Yet, primary genetic and molecular lesions caused by Ay remain unknown. Cuenot reported that Ay caused three aberrant phenotypic alterations; these included yellow coat color, obesity, and embryonic lethality in Ay homozygous embryos (Ay/Ay). Since 1905, a number of other Ay-induced abnormalities have been reported. Among these aberrations is Ay-induced reproductive senescence. It is this particular Ay character (i.e. reproductive failure of Ay/- mice) …

Plasma Pepsinogen Test For Hypobiotic Nematode Larvae In Abomasal Glands Of Sheep, Richard Alex Jensen Mar 1985

Plasma Pepsinogen Test For Hypobiotic Nematode Larvae In Abomasal Glands Of Sheep, Richard Alex Jensen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The American Association of Veterinary Parasitologists reported that nematodes in sheep represent an unquestionably great production loss, and that the absence of deworming on a routine basis would hamper modern sheep production. After ingestion, the infective third stage larva, or L3, exsheaths and burrows into the digestive glands, and becomes a fourth stage larva, or L4. According to Armour, 18 to 21 days after L3 ingestion occurs, the nematode reaches sexual maturity. However, while in the gastric glands, these L4 invade the parietal, or hydrochloric acid (HCl) secreting cells, damaging them, and replacing them with non-acid secreting cells. This leads …
