Harvest Management For Producing Alfalfa In South Dakota, Edward K. Twidwell, Kevin D. Kepahart May 1994

Harvest Management For Producing Alfalfa In South Dakota, Edward K. Twidwell, Kevin D. Kepahart

SDSU Extension Circulars

Harvest management affects yield, quality, and persistence of alfalfa. While producers may strive for high yield, excellent forage quality, and stand longevity, all of these goals are difficult to achieve with one system of harvest management. Compromise among these three factors is often necessary. To determine which harvest management system is best for you, you need to understand how yield, quality, and persistence are influenced by plant maturity and harvest methods.

Use Of Ultrasound In Reproductive Management Of Beef Cow Herds, Douglas D. Zalesky Jan 1994

Use Of Ultrasound In Reproductive Management Of Beef Cow Herds, Douglas D. Zalesky

South Dakota Beef Report, 1994

The use of ultrasound technology in reproductive management of beef cow herds is currently being evaluated in ongoing projects with cooperator herds in South Dakota. The projects include the use of ultrasound for the purposes of evaluating 1) cycling activity of heifers on estrous synchronization programs immediately prior to breeding and 2) early pregnancy detection and aging of fetuses in heifers and mature cows. Information obtained from these images will be used by producers to make management decisions associated with the breeding season, selection of heifers, and nutrition. Ovaries are evaluated for the presence of follicles and a corpus luteum, …

Effect Of Weaning Date On Performance Of Beef Cows, R. J. Pruitt, P. A. Momont Jan 1994

Effect Of Weaning Date On Performance Of Beef Cows, R. J. Pruitt, P. A. Momont

South Dakota Beef Report, 1994

Records from 92 mature crossbred cows calving in March and April were used to determine the effect of weaning calves 40 days earlier than the traditional weaning time on cow weight change, body condition, and reproductive performance. When calves were weaned early (September 14 versus October 231, their dams gained more weight from September 14 to early December and had higher body condition scores in December than the dams of later weaned calves. The two nutritional treaments imposed after calving were important in explaining the effects of earlier weaning on cow reproductive performance. For cows that were fed grass hay …

Winter Diet And Nutritional Condition Of White-Tailed Deer In The Northern Black Hills, South Dakota, Robert G. Osborn Jan 1994

Winter Diet And Nutritional Condition Of White-Tailed Deer In The Northern Black Hills, South Dakota, Robert G. Osborn

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Habitat deterioration in the northern Black Hills (NBH) of South Dakota may be responsible for declining white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) population levels (Griffin et al. 1992). Because of the relationship between habitat and nutrition, a two-year research project was initiated in January 1992 to evaluate the physical and nutritional condition of white-tailed deer inhabiting five NBH winter subranges. Habitat variables were measured at 100 random locations on each study area. Pellet groups were collected throughout each study area at two-week intervals during January, February, and March 1992 and 1993. Five female white-tailed deer were collected from each study area in …

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch Jan 1994

Characteristics Of Milk And Reduced Fat Cheddar Cheese From Cows Fed Extruded Soybeans And Niacin, Matthew Ryan Lentsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's consumers are demanding food products that are "low-fat", "reduced fat", "high in -unsaturated fatty acids", and "low cholesterol". This trend in food product selection is at the advice of many health professionals. Current health recommendations are to lower the dietary intake of fat, especially saturated fat. In 1992, total dairy sales accounted for over 10% of total food sales (Milk Industry Foundation, 1993). Since dairy products are perceived as being hypercholesterolemic, a market exists for dairy products which are "lower in fat" and/or "lower in saturated fat". It is said that "consumer perception is marketing reality", and because of …

Beef Cattle Producer "Sustainability" And "Organic” Indices, Donald Taylor, Dillon Feuz Sep 1993

Beef Cattle Producer "Sustainability" And "Organic” Indices, Donald Taylor, Dillon Feuz

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper covers one component of a research project aimed at exploring the sustainability of beef cattle production in South Dakota. In this exploratory research, farmers/ranchers who follow alternative "near-organic" production practices are being studied in relation to farmers/ranchers who follow "mainstream" production practices. The study is being accomplished through comparisons of four "matching" pairs of "near-organic" and "mainstream" case study farms/ranches, with the members of each pair being as similar as possible in size-of-operation, types of cattle, natural and economic resources, and overall farm management levels. The comparisons involve both physical and economic measures of production. To determine farmers/ranchers …

Using Distiller's Dried Grain From Corn In Baked Goods, Cooperative Extension Service Aug 1993

Using Distiller's Dried Grain From Corn In Baked Goods, Cooperative Extension Service

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Distiller's grain is produced during the process of making ethanol from corn. This very complex process is simplified as described in the adjoining diagram. To make ethanol, corn is cooked with starch-degrading enzymes. This process breaks the starch in the corn to sugar. Yeast is then added to the mixture. As the yeast ferments the sugar, carbon dioxide (CO2) and ethanol are produced. The CO2 is vented off, and the ethanol is removed from this slurry. The slurry that remains can be separated into distillers wet grain and a thin liquid called sweetwater. The wet distiller's grain may be sold …

The Skills And Training Needed By Farm Management Researchers In The Future: Discussion, Douglas Franklin May 1993

The Skills And Training Needed By Farm Management Researchers In The Future: Discussion, Douglas Franklin

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper discusses Loren Tauer's paper entitled "The Skills and Training Needed by Farm Management researches in the Future. "To discuss the skills and training needed in the future, the priorities identified for the future are to be specified to indicate the direction training may need to be focused. As noted English novelist-playwright and Nobel Prize winner John Galsworthy stated, “If you do not think about the future, you cannot have one. "Thus, this paper is a forward looking paper in that regard, thinking about the future so that we can focus on a direction. However, Alan Greenspan has pulled …
