Early Life History Of Yellow Perch In Eastern South Dakota Lakes, Shannon Fisher
Early Life History Of Yellow Perch In Eastern South Dakota Lakes, Shannon Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Yellow perch Perea flavescens are a popular South Dakota sportfish; however, inconsistent recruitment creates highly variable and unpredictable perch fishery quality. Before fishery managers can begin to develop and assess strategies to stabilize yellow perch recruitment, a better understanding of their early life history is required. I selected two natural lakes with differing yellow perch population types and monitored brood stock, spawning habits, and larval and juvenile life history patterns during 1995 and 1996. Pelican Lake was selected as a representative yellow perch population exhibiting inconsistent recruitment and Pickerel Lake as a population with relatively consistent recruitment. Yellow perch tended …
An Examination Of Selected Ethnic Foodways In The Upper Midwest, Gregory A. Mader
An Examination Of Selected Ethnic Foodways In The Upper Midwest, Gregory A. Mader
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many geographers recognize regional studies as a guidepost of geography. Cultural geographers have long identified the significance of ethnic regions and the differences between various ethnic groups in matters of housing, work, agriculture and diet. In many cases foodways and regional cuisine are distinct enough to act as a key identifier of a cultural region. This thesis uses church and other local cookbooks to identify specific ethnic and non - ethnic foods eaten by the Dutch of Northwestern Iowa, the Norwegians of the North Dakota-Minnesota border area, and the German-Russians of Southern North Dakota. From this source of information, patterns …

24th Central Alfalfa Improvement Conference: June 18-20, 1995, Ramada Inn, Spearfish, South Dakota, K. D. Kephart
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
For several years alfalfa breeders have selected for improved winterhardiness within fall dormancy classes. This has caused increasing concern about the reliability of fall dormancy as a predictor of alfalfa winterhardiness. A standard test for the evaluation of winter survival per se was developed to address this concern. The experiments reported here were designed to examine the relationship between fall dormancy and winter survival indices generated from standard tests with winter injury in multiple location alfalfa trials after a "test winter".

Organic Versus Sustainable Fed Cattle Production: A South Dakota Case Study, Donald Taylor, Dillion Feuz, Ming Guan
Organic Versus Sustainable Fed Cattle Production: A South Dakota Case Study, Donald Taylor, Dillion Feuz, Ming Guan
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
This is an exploratory study of "organic11 versus "sustainable" agriculture applied to fed cattle production. Two interrelated premises underlie the study. The paramount factors considered in current certification standards for organic beef production, in our judgment, are (1) protection of animal health and welfare and (2) production of a differentiated product intended to be conducive to consumer health and which, therefore, will command a price premium in the market. Second, we believe the concept of sustainability embraces concerns extending beyond those currently embodied in organic production standards. The theme of organic versus sustainable fed cattle production is examined through development …

Crude Protein Content Of Diet Of Cattle Grazing Native And Introduced Pastures, C. A. Tusler, P. S. Johnson, J. J. Wagner, B. F. Sowell
South Dakota Beef Report, 1995
Crude protein contents of diets were compared for steers grazing introduced, high condition native and low condition native grass pastures under spring-deferment or season-long grazing systems. This study was conducted at the SDSU Cottonwood Research Station near Cottonwood, SD, in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Esophageally fistulated steers were used to obtain diet samples throughout the grazing season on all treatments. Esophageal samples were analyzed for crude protein content and data were compared among grazing treatments within each year. In all three years, cattle diets were not limiting until late summer. Contrary to what was expected, diets of cattle on introduced …
Effect Of A Blood Meal/Corn Gluten Meal Supplement After Calving On Performance Of Cows Grazing Native Range, R. J. Pruitt, J. S. Heldt
Effect Of A Blood Meal/Corn Gluten Meal Supplement After Calving On Performance Of Cows Grazing Native Range, R. J. Pruitt, J. S. Heldt
South Dakota Beef Report, 1995
A spring grazing trial was conducted to determine the effect of a supplement with lower rumen degradability (sometimes referred to as escape protein or bypass protein) than soybean meal on cow and calf performance. Three supplement treatments based on corn, soybean meal and blood meallcorn gluten meal were fed to 70 Simmental-Angus crossbred cows grazing native range from early April to late May. There was no advantage to the escape protein as measured by cow weight change, reproductive performance or calf gain. Corn supplemented cows performed similar to soybean meal supplemented cows.

Effect Of Ewe Breed On Fall Lambing Performance, A. L. Slyer, Bruce Read
Effect Of Ewe Breed On Fall Lambing Performance, A. L. Slyer, Bruce Read
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1995
Seasonality of lamb production continues to plague the industry and feeds the large price swings found in the market place. This translates into a fluctuating economic picture for lamb producer, feeder, packer, and consumer. This wide price fluctuation makes accurate financial projections difficult if not impossible. Fall lambing offers a means of spreading the available supply of fresh American lamb over more months, thus reducing the common practice of holding lambs back or over finishing lambs.

Effect Of Test Weight On The Feed Value Of Corn To Feedlot Lambs, C. L. Willms, R. H. Pritchard, C. P. Birkelo, A. L. Miron
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1995
The objective of this trial was to evaluate the feeding value of corn with differing test weight in a growth study with lambs fed a finishing diet ab libitum.

South Dakota Performance Ram Testing Program Final Reports: 1993-94 And 1994-95, Jeff Held
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1995
The South Dakota Performance Ram Testing program was established primarily to identify differences in wool traits for rams managed under the same environmental conditions and plane of nutrition. Secondly, to measure postweaning growth rate as indicated by weight gain. An added feature is evaluation of animal carcass merit using real-time ultrasound technology.

Agricultural And Food Policy Preferences: The 1994 Perspectives Of South Dakota Agricultural Producers, Bashir Qasmi, John A. Sondey
Agricultural And Food Policy Preferences: The 1994 Perspectives Of South Dakota Agricultural Producers, Bashir Qasmi, John A. Sondey
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
U.S. farm policies are reviewed, every five years concurrent with the drafting of new farm legislation. The present farm bill expires in 1995, and a new bill will be debated and enacted in 1995. Since farm and food policies have a major impact on farmers, information on their preferences with regard to these policies are invaluable to legislators as well as to different advocacy groups (working for farmers). The research was completed as a part of a 15 state study to document the agricultural and food policy preferences by agricultural producers. This report deals with the policy preferences of South …
Strawberries In South Dakota, Anne Fennell, David F. Graper
Strawberries In South Dakota, Anne Fennell, David F. Graper
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
The strawberry is a popular small fruit that is adapted to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions and may be grown in most parts of South Dakota. Strawberries are very productive plants for the space they occupy. The fruit is high in vitamin C and contains ellagic acid, an anticarcinogen. A planting of 50 Junebearing strawberries will fill a 100 foot matted row and should produce 50-60 quarts of fruit. Everbearing plants grown in a raised bed can produce one half to one quart of berries per plant.
