Asean-4: Agricultural Diversification In The 1990s, Donald Taylor
Asean-4: Agricultural Diversification In The 1990s, Donald Taylor
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Agricultural "diversification" is a prominent theme in ASEAN-4 (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, and Thailand) today. Since formulation of Indonesia's First 5-Year Development Plan in 1969, the four primary concepts guiding the country's development have been intensification, extensification, rehabilitation, and diversification. In the Fifth Plan (1989-94), diversification was shifted up to top priority (Kasryno, et al., 1992, 1; Saroso, 1991, 184). Malaysia's policies for export diversification have resulted in the value added from tin and rubber relative to the total value of primary exports decreasing from 63% in 1970 to 15% in 1990 (Yaacob, 1992, 4). Within agriculture, Malaysia has adopted policies …
Effects Of Growth Pattern On Muscle Growth, Nuclei Number, Protein Accretion, And Body Composition In Heifers, C. L. Alderson, R. H. Pritchard, D. L. Boggs
Effects Of Growth Pattern On Muscle Growth, Nuclei Number, Protein Accretion, And Body Composition In Heifers, C. L. Alderson, R. H. Pritchard, D. L. Boggs
South Dakota Beef Report, 1993
The effects of compensatory growth on accretion of muscle mass, protein mass, and nuclei number of the supraspinatus and semitendinosus muscles were evaluated using seven serial slaughter groups of Angus x Limousin heifer calves (n = 28, BW 270 2 9.5 kg). Fractional growth rates of carcass protein and fat were also evaluated. To achieve compensatory growth, energy intake was restricted for 88 days (Phase 1) followed by adlibitum feeding of a high energy diet (Phase2) [LH]. Controls were allowed continuous ad libitum access to the high energy diet (HH). Muscle weights, body composition samples, and muscle biopsies were collected …

Chaps Summary For South Dakota, 1992, D. L. Boggs
South Dakota Beef Report, 1993
Calving distribution and calf performance data were summarized from the CHAPS (Cow Herd Appraisal of Performance Software) analyses of 102 South Dakota cow herds. CHAPS uses beef cow weaning weight records to calculate adjusted 205-day weights and ratios, keep lifetime production records on cows, calculate Most Probable Producing Ability estimates for cows, produce a sire summary, and analyze production according to cow age and 21-day calving periods. The 1992 summary represents 11,661 cows for an average of 114 cows per herd. The herds ranged in size from 10 to 616 head. The average midpoint of the calving season for these …
Conventional Versus High Energy Receiving And Step-Up Diets For Feedlot Cattle, C. P. Birkelo, J. Lounsbery
Conventional Versus High Energy Receiving And Step-Up Diets For Feedlot Cattle, C. P. Birkelo, J. Lounsbery
South Dakota Beef Report, 1993
Two hundred sixty-four yearling steers with an initial average weight of 730 Ib were randomly allotted to 24 pens and fed ad libitum either conventional (CONV) receiving or step-up diets (hay content decreased from 50% to 40, 30, 20, and 10% of diet dry matter) or high energy (HE) diets (hay content was maintained throughout at 10% but wet corn distillers grain (WDG) decreased from 43% to 30, 20, 10, and 0%). The feeding of WDG in place of hay was designed to maximize energy intake while not overloading the rumen with starch during the grain adaptation period. Long grass …

Sdsu Beef Teaching Herd, R. J. Pruitt
South Dakota Beef Report, 1993
A herd of Angus, Simmental and Simmental- Angus crossbreds are maintained at the Cow-Calf Teaching and Research Unit near the SDSU campus. Cattle from this herd are used for teaching, research, and extension activities. In addition to use in the classroom, cattle are used for the annual SDSU Little International, field days, and numerous 4-H, FFA, and other educational events. Research projects include reproductive physiology, creep feeding, and cow nutrition studies.

A Comparison Of Fall Lambing Vs. Spring Lambing Performance Of Purebred And Crossbred Ewes, A. L. Slyter, Bruce Read, Ron Swan
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1993
Seasonality of lamb production continues to be a major problem for the sheep industry. The recent marked drop in live lamb price resulted from a shift of west coast lambs going to market as new crop spring lambs started through the market channels. Spreading the production and marketing curve should smooth out wide price fluctuations and stabilize the economics of the entire lamb meat industry. Fall lambing in combination with spring lambing would provide a more continuous lamb supply for market, slaughter, and consumption, thus stabilizing prices and ensuring a better supply of new crop fresh American lamb at the …

How The New Grading Standards Fit Industry Needs, Jeff Held
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1993
Consumers demand leaner cuts of lamb and retailers have requested more uniformity in lamb carcass characteristics for them to better serve their clientele. With the annual per capita lamb consumption in the U.S. at slightly more than 1.0 lb, meeting and enhancing consumer demand is critical.

Lamb Preference For Commercial And Grain-Soybean Meal Based Creep Diets During The Preweaning Season, J. E. Held, B. Read, A. L. Slyter
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1993
In the Upper Midwest, the majority of winter-born lambs are offered creep feed until they are weaned. Creep diets are intended to supplement the nutrients supplied by ewe's milk. Lactating ewes normally reach their peak in milk production about 4 weeks postpartum. Beyond this daily milk production declines independent of the diet offered. Lambs typically begin to consume creep feed at 10 to 14 days of age. The amount consumed is inversely proportional to the amount of milk consumed. The amount of creep feed consumed by young lambs, 2 to 6 weeks of age, is affected by the palatability of …

Market Lambs--Yesterday, Today And Tomorrow, Leroy H. Boyd
South Dakota Sheep Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1993
During the past four decades, purebred sheep production has encouraged weight gain, ram certification, and initiated the search for a four square inch loin eye area. Test stations, hindsaddle, carcass contests, backfat thickness, yield grade, and consumer preferred lamb carcass became industry words. By using ultrasonics, we measure or estimate fat thickness and loin eye area.

South Dakota Beef Cow-Calf Producer Management Practices, Donald Taylor, Dillon M. Feuz
Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)
This research report is based on the results of a mail survey of randomly selected South Dakota beef cow-calf operators undertaken during late 1991. The purpose of the survey was to determine the nature of management practices followed by the state's cow-calf producers and whether those practices differ by size and/or location of herd. Attention was given to producers' overall cowcalf, breeding, feeding, and health management practices.

Effect Of Source And Level Of Supplemental Protein On Performance Of Postpartum Range Cows, M. C. Namminga, R. J. Pruitt
South Dakota Beef Report, 1992
Two postpartum grazing trials were conducted from early March to mid May in consecutive years to determine the effects of supplemental rumen escape protein on the performance of spring calving beef cows grazing native range. Simmental x Angus cows were allotted within 7 to 14 days of calving to three supplement treatments formulated to provide equal amounts of energy from corn, soybean meal, and a combination of blood meal and corn gluten meal. Cows supplemented with corn lost more weight than cows supplemented with soybean meal. Supplemental escape protein did not improve weight gains over the soybean meal supplement. Supplemental …
