Crop Rotation For South Dakota, E.C. Chilcott May 1903

Crop Rotation For South Dakota, E.C. Chilcott

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

That some definite system of crop rotation must be adopted by the farmers of this state before they can hope to obtain the best returns from their farms is a proposition that admits of no denial. That no rotation can be devised that will be equally suitable for all the farms of the state is also an unquestionable fact. Each individual farmer will have to work out the details of a rotation for his particular farm. But it is the belief of the writer that much can be done by the Experiment Station in determining some of the general principles …

I. Lamb Feeding Ii. Fattening Shep On Grass, J.W. Wilson, H.G. `. Skinner

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The production of a high class of meat products from the raw materials at hand should be the aim of every stockman in the state. Of all the animals on the farm the sheep is regarded by many as the most profitable, not only from the fact that it will convert, economically, the grains and forage plants into higher selling products, but also because it has no equal as a weed destroyer and a general improver of the farm. Of the six hundred or more different weeds and grasses found on our prairies and cultivated fields, the sheep will eat …

A Preliminary Report On The Fringed Tape Worm Of Sheep, E.L. Moore Apr 1903

A Preliminary Report On The Fringed Tape Worm Of Sheep, E.L. Moore

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The increased number of inquiries received lead to the belief that a preliminary report setting forth our present knowledge of this parasite would be of value. While our record of autopsies shows that the fringed tapeworm of the intestines frequently inhabits the same individual, as the twisted stomach worm, it is to the former alone we desire to call attention. An adult worm measures from 15 to 30 cm. (5 15-16 to 11 7-8 in.) in length. In comparison with other species of tapeworm the head is large, about the size of a pin's head, and provided with four distinct …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

In order that the reader may understand something of the plan and scope of the work in cereal investigation under way at this Station the following statements are made: This Station has been engaged in cereal investigations for a number of years, and in the spring of 1901 the United States Department of Agriculture entered into an agreement with the Station to enlarge the scope of the work through co-operation with the Department. In this co-operative agreement Dr. A. F. Woods of the Bureau of Plant Industry was given general supervision of the work for the Department of Agriculture, and …

A Study Of Northwestern Apples, N.E. Hansen Jun 1902

A Study Of Northwestern Apples, N.E. Hansen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Judging from the many specimens of apples sent in for identification, or submitted at the state fairs and horticultural society meetings, there exists much lack of exact information regarding varieties. Every fruit grower knows the need of some publication containing descriptions of varieties to assist in determining the name of varieties unknown to him the nursery catalogues usually being too brief to serve as aids to identification. During the past eleven years the writer has made an effort to make C:.rawings and descriptions of the apples cultivated in the prairie northwest, especially South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa. The investigation has …

Ornamentals For South Dakota, N.E. Hansen Jun 1901

Ornamentals For South Dakota, N.E. Hansen

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The early settlers in a new state are too busy with breaking the raw prairie, grain-raising, and similar work to pay any attention to the planting of ornamental trees and shrubs. As the land bcomes subdued, and money more plentiful, there comes a desire to plant trees, shrubs and flowers on the home grounds. The inhabitants of the towns and cities begin this work of lawn-making and planting ornamentals earlier because of the smaller extent of the home grounds. "Ornamentals" is a nursery term meaning trees, shrubs and plants intended for decorative purposes. The first attempts at landscape gardening generally …

Native And Introduced Forage Plants, J.H. Shepard, D.A. Saunders, W.H. Knowx

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The materials for this Bulletin have been collected and the analyses have been made during a period extending over several years. In reality this work is a continuation of that commenced in Bulletin No. 40 of this Station. Prof. Thomas A. Williams, now deceased, continued the collection of native grasses, etc., after Bulletin No. 40 was issued. Before he had severed his connection with this Station he had collected the following plants: Carex pennsylvanica, Stipa comata, Trifolium, alexandrium, Panicum miliacium, var. Sibericum, Polygonum ramosissimum, Ornithopus sativus, Festuca octiflora, Carex laxiflora, Elymus sibericus, Muhlenbergia ambigua, Spergula arvensis, Hordeum pusill um, Heirochloe borealis, …

Drought-Resisting Forage Plants At The Co-Operative Range Experiment Station, Highmore, S. D., J.H. Shepard Mar 1900

Drought-Resisting Forage Plants At The Co-Operative Range Experiment Station, Highmore, S. D., J.H. Shepard

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Soon after the appearance of the first Bulletin from this Station announcing the results of the co-operative irrigation experiments in the James River Valley, it became evident that there was urgent need for experiments in drouth-resisting [sic] forage plants in the range regions of this state. Many requests were received from the stock men who were ranging their herds there, that such work should be done. The matter was thoroughly discussed at the home Station and the necessity was fully admitted. But, owing to a lack of funds, no progress was made. It was even urged by the stock men …
