Potatoes In South Dakota, A. Evans, G. Janssen, M. Fowlds Feb 1922

Potatoes In South Dakota, A. Evans, G. Janssen, M. Fowlds

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

During the past few years the potato raising industry has increased rapidly in South Dakota. The eastern part of the state has come to take rank with the best potato growing sections of the United States. The Sioux Valley now produces potatoes which rank in quantity and quality production with the famous Greeley spuds or the well-known Red River Ohios. Sioux Valley spuds should and will undoubtedly rank high on the market in the future. In 1909, South Dakota raised 50,052 acres of potatoes. These were largely produced east of the Missouri River, with the Black Hills region producing most …

Textile Study : Wool, Azalea Linfield

SDSU Extension Circulars

Materials made from woolen and worsted yarns are among our most useful and valued textiles. The raw material is procured form the fleeces of the various breeds of sheeps, goats, and other animals living in all parts of the world. The clothes made from this wool or hair vary greatly, as the fiber ranges from the short staple, soft, crumpy, dull merino wool to the long, silky, lustrous wool of the Leicester sheep of England, the glossy hair of the Angora goat of Constantinople, or the long, coarse hair of the Chinese sheep. The length of the staple varies from …

Concerning The Degree Of Self Fertilization In Corn (Zea Mays Indentata) That Is Obtained Under Normal Field Conditions, George Janssen Jan 1922

Concerning The Degree Of Self Fertilization In Corn (Zea Mays Indentata) That Is Obtained Under Normal Field Conditions, George Janssen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"Like begets like”. This well-known phrase which aroused so much comment among students in genetics and animal breeding has almost unconsciously become an adage to a part of their philosophy. Whatever truth or lack of it is associated with these words we admire the keenness of observation of him who wrote them. However significant the words "like begets like" could it be strictly adhered to our problem in breeding a cross-fertilized population would be greatly lessened. Much has been done in plant and animal breeding and the methods employed in accomplishing the greater part is without written history. Here and …

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar Jan 1922

The Effect Of Diet Of The Cow And The Pasteurization Of Milk In Closed Bottles Upon The Nutritive And Antiscorbutic Properties Of Cows' Milk, George C. Biggar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Probably no discovery in the scientific world, and especially in the field of nutrition, has excited more interest in the past few years than the finding and naming of the three hitherto unknown food factors known as vitamins. For many years it has been observed that certain diets for man that apparently are satisfactory as far as their nutritive value is concerned, still seem to lack something necessary for normal growth and function, or else lead to some serious disease. For example it has been known for centuries that sailors on long ocean voyages where the diet consisted largely of …

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Acme wheat, S. D. No. 284 (C. I. No. 5284) was developed by selective breeding at the Highmore experiment farm. Acme is a selection from Kubanka, a tested wheat for South Dakota. Comparative results with Kubanka may be found in South Dakota bulletin 146. This bulletin also quotes the history of Kubanka wheat as follows: "It has medium or short heads that are white with occasionally a slight bluish bloom, and have rather long beards. Feeding Dairy Cattle, T.M. Olson Oct 1921

Feeding Dairy Cattle, T.M. Olson

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

It is the purpose of the writer to give in this bulletin a few practical suggestions on the feeding of dairy cattle, particularly applicable to South Dakota conditions. The suggestions are based on scientific experiments in feeding, and such practices as have been developed by feeders. There are two basic factors in economical milk production one the cow, the other the feed. The characteristics which make one cow a heavy producer when fed the proper amount and kind of feed, and the other a light producer under similar conditions, are inherited, and cannot be altered by feeding. It is safe …

Rations For Pigs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kulhman Aug 1921

Rations For Pigs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kulhman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

On January 1, 1915, there were 1,263,655 head of swine in South Dakota or 253,734 more than on the same date in 1910. While the census figures for the period ending 1920 are not yet available it is estimated that they will show at least a total of 2,300,000 head. The increased production was caused partially by the high prices of pork and also a desire on the part of the producers to do their part in winning the war. Again, the boys' and girls' pig club work in many counties, supervised by the Extension Division of this College has …
