Winter Wheat In South Dakota, A.T. Evans, A. T. And Janssen, G., G. Janssen
Winter Wheat In South Dakota, A.T. Evans, A. T. And Janssen, G., G. Janssen
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Winter wheat production in South Dakota has been constantly on the decline since 1916. In that year 2,775,000 bushels were produced. The crop reporter reports the 1920 production at a figure of 1,325,000 bushels less. At the same time the acreage decreased by 75,000 acres. Spring wheat also shows a steady decrease in production since 1918. The yield in 1916 was low. The decrease in spring wheat production based upon the highest year's average is 63.2 per cent, while, basing our calculation upon the highest year's production on winter wheat we have a decrease of only 47.7 percent. This in …

Farm Record Keeping And The Application Of Business Principles To Farming, M. R. Benedict, H. D. Mccullough
Farm Record Keeping And The Application Of Business Principles To Farming, M. R. Benedict, H. D. Mccullough
SDSU Extension Circulars
How to make his farm return enough profit for a wholesome, worth while living and provide for moderate saving is the problem confronting every farmer to-day. Every farm family wants a comfortable home, schooling for the children, electric lights, running water, and the other comforts of life, but usually these things cannot be had unless the farm is made to pay as a business proposition. Farming is not and never has been a means of getting rich quickly or easily. It is a substantial and necessary occupation offering many advantages. On the other hand, it seldom has paid the farmer …
The County Agent's Handbook, I. B. Johnson
The County Agent's Handbook, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
In the daily work of the county agricultural agent, the agricultural extension worker, the farmer, or anyone interested in agriculture, questions arise, whose answers involve much detailed information. Workers have frequently realized the value of a ready, pocket-sized reference from which such information might be obtained. It is hoped that this handbook may fulfill such a requirement. The material enclosed is of special application to the agricultural conditions of South Dakota, yet so much of it is of general application that the handbook will be found useful by any agricultural worker. The loose leaf plan enables anyone to add whatever …

Digest
There is a great variation in the producing ability of different cows. Testing eliminates the unprofitable cow and enables one to select the very best animals for breeding stock. Page 419.
There are six plans or systems for determining the production of each cow. All of these plans are feasible. It is very important that an accurate sample of milk be secured and that it be properly preserved until tested. Page 420-421.
Occasional farmers are keeping private records of the production of their cows. Page 422.
Boys' milk testing clubs have been organized for the purpose of testing individual …
Influence Of Purebred Dairy Sires, T.M. Olsen, G.C. Biggar
Influence Of Purebred Dairy Sires, T.M. Olsen, G.C. Biggar
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
It shall be the purpose of this bulletin to present data which will answer the question as to the advisability of using as foundation stock the animals already on the average farm, and also to indicate the increase in production of the progeny of good purebred sires, assuming that the cows are fed properly. The data will furthermore throw some light on the question whether a farmer should raise his own cows or buy them. If as good cows can be raised in a comparatively short time, it seems rather hazardous for the average prospective dairyman to risk buying cows …

Grasshoppers, Cutworms And Army Worms And Their Control By Poisoned Bran Mash, A. L. Ford
Grasshoppers, Cutworms And Army Worms And Their Control By Poisoned Bran Mash, A. L. Ford
SDSU Extension Circulars
Were it possible to accurately estimate in dollars and cents the average annual loss caused by grasshoppers, cutworms, and army worms to the growing crops of South Dakota, the figure arrived at would be a staggering one. These three pests cause a greater average annual damage than any other three insect pests in the state. Natural conditions here are such that we may expect outbreaks from any of these three in any part of the state for many years to come. Being situated in this manner, it behooves every farmer in South Dakota to be prepared to fight these pests …
