Cooperative Marketing Of Farm Products In South Dakota, Wendell Frichiof Kumlien Jan 1921

Cooperative Marketing Of Farm Products In South Dakota, Wendell Frichiof Kumlien

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: General Facts Underlying the Whole Problem of Distribution and Marketing of Farm Products Before entering into a detailed discussion of cooperative marketing of farm products as applied to South Dakota, I wish to briefly mention a few general historical facts which in a large part go to make up the background for the whole present day problem of distribution and marketing. 1. Pioneer America’s Agricultural Problems Mainly Those of Production During the period when our country was predominately agricultural, each farm produced practically everything it needed and was in the main self-sufficing. Each farmer produced his own wheat and …

SDSU Extension Circulars

The past year has been filled with unusual activity and interest along the different phases of agricultural extension work. The demand for the services of the different extension workers has greatly increased, so much so that it has become a problem as to how their time may be best assigned to accomplish the most.
Extension work is based upon cooperation. The counties, state, and government cooperate in finding the problems and in solving them. Some of these agricultural and rural problems may be solved in the local community; others need the assistance of the whole county; other problems, again, are …

The Webspinning Sawfly Of Plums And Sandcherries, H.C. Severin Sep 1920

The Webspinning Sawfly Of Plums And Sandcherries, H.C. Severin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Because the plum webspinning sawfly* is the most destructive enemy of the foliage of plum trees and sandcherry bushes and because these are among the most important of the fruit producing plants in South Dakota, a study of this pest was undertaken. As a result of this study, the distribution of the insect has been fairly well determined and its life history and the behavior of the various stages in its life cycle are now known. The plants upon which the larvae feed and the injury done by them was also investigated. The most important of the natural enemies of …

A Serviceable Farm Barn, Ralph L. Patty Aug 1920

A Serviceable Farm Barn, Ralph L. Patty

SDSU Extension Circulars

There is a great demand for the plan of a general barn suitable for a South Dakota farm of from a quarter to a half section of land. Not only are old buildings being replaced but a very great number of larger tracts are being divided into separate farms, and entire sets of new buildings are being erected. These facts, more than any others, probably account for the large number of requests received by the Extension Division for such a plan. The plan presented in this circular is what we believe will best meet this need.

Water As A Limiting Factor In The Growth Of Sweet Clover (M. Alba), A.N. Hume, H. Loomis, J.G. Hutton Jul 1920

Water As A Limiting Factor In The Growth Of Sweet Clover (M. Alba), A.N. Hume, H. Loomis, J.G. Hutton

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. Sweet clover (white) will apparently live in the loam soils employed in the present trial with as little moisture as 9 percent of the dry weight of the soil in which it grows. On the clay soil employed in this series sweet clover appeared to cease growth when the percentage of water on the basis of the dry soil approached 11 percent as a minimum. It is thus indicated that even under conditions otherwise identical variations in soil type may produce some variation in the amounts of water necessary for growth of sweet clover. The observation that soil …

Corn And Millet Silage For Fattening Cattle, J. Wilson, J. W. And Kuhlman, A. H., A.H. Kulhman Jun 1920

Corn And Millet Silage For Fattening Cattle, J. Wilson, J. W. And Kuhlman, A. H., A.H. Kulhman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Summary
1. A choice silage was secured from corn when cut at time of tasseling and also from millet when about 90 percent of grain was ripe.
2. The steers that received shelled corn, oilmeal, and hay did not bring enough more on the market over the lot that received corn silage and oilmeal to justify the feeding of this comparatively expensive ration.
3. The best gains were secured in feeding silage made from White Dent corn, medium sized variety that matures ears before frost. This variety has been used at this station for several years and results secured in …
