Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson Jan 1925

Quantitative Determination Of The Elements In The Nodes And Internodes Of Normal And Abnormal Corn Plants, Percy Danielson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

During the last decade the annual loss due to corn rot diseases has been so great that much attention has been given this problem. These diseases, according to several authorities are caused by certain fungi and bacteria which live parasitically upon the corn plant and are known as root, stalk and ear rots. Several species are found on the seed and start growth as soon as the seed germinates. These same species are found living in the soil. When these organisms are found to be prevalent on the seed and in the soil all stages of growth in the corn …

Useful Homemade Equipment, Clara M. Sutter Jan 1925

Useful Homemade Equipment, Clara M. Sutter

SDSU Extension Circulars

In raising poultry one is too apt to spend so much for equipment that the birds cannot pay interest on the investment and a reasonable amount for labor. Advertisements are so attractive that we find it easier to buy the manufactured articles than to make these that will answer the purpose. Following are some pieces of equipment that may easily be made by any club member.

Weeds And Their Control, Petry, E. J. Dec 1924

Weeds And Their Control, Petry, E. J.

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The aim of this bulletin has been to include only the worst weeds which are more or less general throughout the state, but the writer has also added other facts of interest and value about weeds. The successful man or woman of today must know a great deal more than formerly about his or her occupation and about good living if more profit and enjoyment are to be obtained from life. This bulletin contains more than a mere set of directions, by which one may come to know and destroy some weeds. How weeds destroy the value of labor, of …

Hog Cholera, Gilbert S. Weaver Jul 1924

Hog Cholera, Gilbert S. Weaver

SDSU Extension Circulars

Hog cholera is a highly contagious disease of swine only causing peculiar and characteristic symptoms, resulting in death, and is caused by a virus. The disease has existed in the United States for 91 years, the first known outbreak occurred in the southwestern section of Ohio in 1823. Probably it was imported into this country as a great many of the diseases have been. It gradually spread to neighboring states and inasmuch as nothing was done to control it, the disease has now spread to every hog-raising state in the union. In South Dakota more or less hog cholera exists …

Suggestions On The Incorporation Of Cooperative Livestock Shipping Associations Under The Laws Of South Dakota, M. R. Benedict, Turner Wright Jul 1924

Suggestions On The Incorporation Of Cooperative Livestock Shipping Associations Under The Laws Of South Dakota, M. R. Benedict, Turner Wright

SDSU Extension Circulars

The cooperative shipping of livestock form South Dakota points has become so general that nearly every farm is familiar with the workings of the Cooperative Shipping Association. During the early stages of this movement; that is, up to the present time, these organizations have been for the most part loosely formed, unincorporated associations of producers with no very permanent existence. Where they were well managed, they have accomplished fairly well the principal purposes of a livestock shipping association; namely, the narrowing of the handling margin at the local points, better grading of the stock shipped, and the elimination of excessive …

Flowers Every Day In The Year, Hansen, N. E. May 1924

Flowers Every Day In The Year, Hansen, N. E.

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

To have flowers on the table every day in the year is a dream of beauty that can be realized in South Dakota. It is done with bulbs during the winter and early spring, perennials in the spring, summer and fall, and annual flowers and summer bulbs during the summer and early fall. During the past twenty-nine years at this station, the writer has experimented with hundreds of varieties of these various flowers. A brief account of the main successes will be of interest for the prairie planter at this time. The flower specialists would like a full account of …

Forage Crops For Lambs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman May 1924

Forage Crops For Lambs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The object of the experiment was to ascertain the value of different forage crops for the Iamb in the fall of the year when the pasture grasses become partially dried and the ewes lessen in their feed for the Iamb. The condition of the Iamb at marketing time is governed chiefly by the kind of feed it and its dam have received since birth of lamb, and anything that can be done to increase its growth and condition must be considered an advantage. We consider it a good practice to wean the spring Iamb in early fall when pastures begin …

Purebred Dairy Sires: Their Value And Influence On Production, T.M. Olson, R.M. Gilcreast May 1924

Purebred Dairy Sires: Their Value And Influence On Production, T.M. Olson, R.M. Gilcreast

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

There are two fundamental factors which should be considered in starting a dairy herd. The first factor is the experience and training of the prospective dairyman. Success in the dairy business presupposes that the management shall have some knowledge of how to feed and care for dairy cows. Without this knowledge a low average production is likely to result, even with good producing cows. Dairy experience should not be gained with a high priced herd and at the expense of good producers. The second factor which should be given consideration before deciding on the method of starting the herd is …

Potatoes As A Feed For Fattening Pigs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman May 1924

Potatoes As A Feed For Fattening Pigs, J.W. Wilson, A.H. Kuhlman

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Many farmers of South Dakota who engage in the production of potatoes as a cash or market crop oftentimes have large quantities of cull or unmarketable potatoes at their disposal. In such cases much interest is manifested in the value of potatoes as a feed for livestock. Although potatoes have often been used for such purposes, very little experimental data is available for showing the feeding value of potatoes or the best method of utilizing them in rations for farm animals. In the early studies made to determine the feeding value of potatoes, no mention is made of the use …

Some Tentative Statements Concerning Fowlds Hulless Oats, A.N. Hume Mar 1924

Some Tentative Statements Concerning Fowlds Hulless Oats, A.N. Hume

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Comparative yields, secured at Brookings in 1923, indicate that hulless oats yielded a somewhat lower number of bushels per acre than the best standard varieties of ordinary oats. The same comparative yields for this season indicated that a hulless variety yielded a lower number of bushels per acre than the best standard varieties, even when the latter were reduced to a hulless basis. Samples of hulless oats contained a higher percentage of raw protein than the whole grain of ordinary varieties, but a lower percentage than the kernels (grains with hulls removed) of the same varieties, according to analyses made …
