A Year's Progress With South Dakota's Farm Electric Test Line, R. L. Patty
A Year's Progress With South Dakota's Farm Electric Test Line, R. L. Patty
SDSU Extension Circulars
America uses a great deal of electric service in her cities for lighting appliances and power, but service offered the rural districts from power lines, in the past has been limited and poorly organized. The farmer has not been a desirable customer for the power companies and frequently has accused the power companies of charging excessive rates. One reason for this is found in the high cost of distribution of electric energy. It costs too much money to run a low voltage electric line to a farm just for lighting service. If the power company built the line, the interest, …

More than 300 township or community organizations have been formed by the farm men and women of South Dakota. Probably more than 15,000 farm families are discussing farm and home problems in these organizations every month, and also enjoying the social advantages which accompany such cooperation.

Improving Winter Rations For Pigs, A.H. Kuhlman, J.W. Wilson
Improving Winter Rations For Pigs, A.H. Kuhlman, J.W. Wilson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
An efficient winter ration for fall pigs is one which supplies not only the essential nutrients of a balanced ration but which also furnishes adequately those energizing elements which are obtained so abundantly, even if incidentally, from direct sunlight and succulent pasture during the summer months. The standard ration of yellow corn and tankage is not a very efficient winter ration for fall pigs because these feeds do not supply sufficiently the vitamins which are so necessary for satisfactory growth and development. Fortunately, this practical and popular ration may be easily improved by the addition of alfalfa hay and linseed …
The Wheat-Stem Maggot, G.I. Gilbertson
The Wheat-Stem Maggot, G.I. Gilbertson
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The wheat-stem maggot is the young or larval form of the fly, Meromyza americana Fitch. It attacks not only wheat plants, but also rye, barley, emmer, timothy and certain species of native grasses. Records in South Dakota show an annual loss to cereal crops of from less than one to fifteen per cent. Both spring sown and fall sown grain are attacked. The wheat-stem maggot is widely distributed over South Dakota. The insect occurs wherever it can find certain native grasses or cultivated cereals in which to breed. It is generally conceded that the pest is a native of North …

Use More Milk, Mary A. Dolve
Use More Milk, Mary A. Dolve
SDSU Extension Circulars
Nature has provided milk for a growth food. It is so efficient that, with no other nourishment than milk, an infant will double or even treble its weight in nine months. Childhood is the period of growth and development. The very best of building materials should be provided in order that strong, healthy bodies may result. Milk contains, in an ideal form, the elements necessary for growth and repair.
South Dakota's Agricultural Program, R. H. Rogers
South Dakota's Agricultural Program, R. H. Rogers
SDSU Extension Circulars
Agriculture is South Dakota's leading industry, representing a capital investment of almost three billion dollars and producing an annual income of about 200 million dollars. Still in its infancy, this great industry deserves a program of future development that will serve as a guide to the many individuals interested in the business of farming in South Dakota. In the preparation of this program, it is realized that this first attempt is not perfect in all details. However, it is hoped that with this as a beginning, the future of Agriculture in South Dakota will be approached with a keener insight …

Planning The Living Room, Susan Z. Wilder
SDSU Extension Circulars
Home surroundings have a direct influence on the health and happiness of the family. The living room is the center of family life. Through the good times together and in the entertainment of friends in this room, parents and children grow into an appreciation of each other. “Living rooms are made to live in; that is, to play in, to work in, to read in, to sing in and to entertain in.”

Correlations Between Length Of Spike And Culm In Wheat And Certain Characters Of Progeny, Including Yield, A.N. Hume, E.W. Hardies, C. Franzke
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Measurements of the central culm and head of 256 plants of Marquis wheat were made in 1919 , which were called "mother heads" and "mother culms' ' respectively. Each head was threshed separately and an equal number of kernels from each, sown in nursery rows with the seed from long heads alternating with that from short heads. The same order of planting was followed during the length of the experiment. Each row was threshed separately and seed saved for the following year.

Hog Pastures, Crops For South Dakota, And A Plan To Provide Clean Lots And Pastures, Agricultural Extension Service, South Dakota State College Of Agriculture And Mechanic Arts
SDSU Extension Circulars
Profitable pork production demands the use of good pastures. This circular deals with this problem.
Part one contains a list of the important hog pasture crops; their relative efficiency as pork producers; and points on culture and sections in South Dakota where they can best be grown. Part two contains a complete plan for a system of hog lots and pastures to provide clean land and the rotation of crops that best fit into such a system.

Household Pests, A. L. Ford
Household Pests, A. L. Ford
SDSU Extension Circulars
Household insects and similar pests are attracting more and more attention each year. Housewives are more strongly convinced than ever that these pests are not to be neglected, but must be treated as a dangerous and serious problem. Many of these home invading pests either completely consume or render our foods unfit for human use. Others destroy our clothing. Some are just simply nuisances around the house. The most dangerous group, however, is composed of those pests which carry and spread human diseases.

A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase
A Chemical And Morphological Study Of Grindelia Squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal, Marcus A. Chase
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A species of Grindelia known as Gum, Rosin or Tar weed, is of common occurrence on dry banks and sandy soils in various parts of South Dakota. During day seasons it attains such a dense growth in closely cropped pastures that horses feeding in them have their heads and manes covered with a black tarry-like substance, and their fetlocks collects fairly large ball of this tarry mass. In dry years the development of the weed is so rapid that the grass in a closely cropped pasture may be nearly exterminated during a single season. A pasture may seem to be …
