How The 1938 Agricultural Conservation Program Applies To South Dakota Farms, Extension Service, South Dakota State College Of Agriculture And Mechanic Arts
SDSU Extension Circulars
Objectives of the 1938 Agricultural Conservation Program – The Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938 authorizes features of the 1938 program which are designed to stabilize and improve the income of farmers. Farm incomes in South Dakota are adversely affected both by years of excessive production and years of short crops. This year's program provides for: (1) soil conservation and the prevention of erosion by wind and water: (2) national acreage allotments to provide for the domestic and export demands of food and fiber plus adequate reserves for carryover; (3) storage of reserves on the farm by means of commodity loans, …

The Bach Family Looks At 1938, Horace M. Jones, John M. Ryan
SDSU Extension Circulars
Farmer James Bach opened the lid of his mail box and took quick inventory of the daily deposit the carrier left on his morning rounds. A beautiful illustrated seed catalogue, with its gaudy cover page consulting the first sign of spring, the daily newspaper, the farm magazine, a card from cousin Egbert in Detroit, who, dissatisfied with the life of his rural boyhood home had sought employment in an automobile factory, and a letter from the county agent enclosing an invitation to attend a 1938 Farm Outlook meeting was the mail. Mr. Bach submitted to the temptation to read Egbert's …

Planting And Growing The Family Food Supply, L. L. Davis
SDSU Extension Circulars
Locating and Planting the Family Garden. Importance. A good vegetable garden used to be a luxury in part of our state. The development of small dams and impounding of water for stock and for irrigating small areas have led to a greater interest in vegetable gardening. We know that the garden is important because it furnishes fresh vegetables for summer needs, and by canning, drying and storing extend their use through the winter. The vegetables furnish minerals and vitamins that are essential in our diet. Many people have found that a garden supplements employment and incomes by using spare time …

Sheep, I. B. Johnson
Sheep, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Sheep production in South Dakota has been increasing from year to year, reaching its greatest development at the beginning of 1,934 with approximately 1,300,000 ewes and ewe lambs on South Dakota farms and ranches. In spite of a series of dry seasons this number has been reduced but slightly and it may be said that the state's sheep breeding population remains well above a million head annually. The more recent development has been in the farm flocks in the eastern part of the state, farmers realizing that sheep are coming through with two cash returns annually – one on wool …
Meat Identification And Judging, I. B. Johnson
Meat Identification And Judging, I. B. Johnson
SDSU Extension Circulars
Meat is a food most attractive to one's appetite. A diet without meat lacks savoriness and palatability. The following statement regarding meat has been accepted by the American Medical Association: "The modern science of nutrition shows meat to be a wholesome, valuable, healthful, easily digestible and highly nutritious food." Because of meat's importance in. the diet, all 4-H Club members should avail themselves of the opportunity afforded by meat judging and identification work to become more familiar with quality in meat and with the wholesale and retail cuts of meat. Poultry Houses For South Dakota, Ralph L. Patty
Poultry Houses For South Dakota, Ralph L. Patty
SDSU Extension Circulars
The South Dakota poultry house plans described in this circular were designed from a study of plans from other states, trials of houses on the College Poultry Farm, and after the suggestions of former Professor G. L. Stevenson, Clara M. Sutter, Professor W. E. Poley, and O. J. Weisner. The house is designed for the rigorous climate of the north central section of the United States. In the design of this house the cost item has been kept in mind constantly. A better house could be designed and built but not for the reasonable cost of this one. This house …

Organization of Agricultural Extension Work in South Dakota during March, 1912,
Marked the beginning-of a-movement in agricultural education that was destined to influence the economic and social life of rural people in South Dakota for twenty-five years. Only the future will reveal its limitations. Agricultural Extension Work had its inception in Brown county. Farmers, business men, a railroad, a mail order house, and county commissioners of Brown county had formed the Better Farming Association. This organization took the initiative in promoting and inaugurating county agent work. During the span of years from March, 1912, to March, 1937, Agricultural Extension work …

The Ectoparasites Of Some Of The Rodents In The Vicinity Of Brookings, South Dakota, Dermont E. Herreman
The Ectoparasites Of Some Of The Rodents In The Vicinity Of Brookings, South Dakota, Dermont E. Herreman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The animals known as rodents furnish very satisfactory material for the study of parasite infestations. Because parasites of rodents as well as the rodents themselves are unusually interesting, many examinations have been made, by students, of the parasites and their hosts. These investigations have, no doubt, been facilitated by the small size, abundance, and comparative ease with which these rodents can be captured. Rodents are economically important in that they themselves are injurious in doing damage to fields, crops, and forests and are responsible for looses running into the thousands of dollars annually. Also many rodents harbor parasites which are …

Farm Planning In South Dakota, A. M. Eberle, S. W. Jones
Farm Planning In South Dakota, A. M. Eberle, S. W. Jones
SDSU Extension Circulars
Cropping systems on many of our farms will not maintain soil fertility and control erosion. In South Dakota especially, a considerable acreage of land which is now being farmed should be growing grass. How much land should be shifted from farm land to grass? Several authorities have ideas on the subject, but what does the farmer himself think about it? How much agricultural production should be accomplished in any one county, in the State, or the Nation? With a view to getting farmers' answers to such questions, an agricultural adjustment planning project was launched in 1935 by the AAA and …
