Buying Canned Meats : Home Canned Meats, Susan Z. Wilder Apr 1936

Buying Canned Meats : Home Canned Meats, Susan Z. Wilder

SDSU Extension Circulars

Canned meat products are not used as extensively as the canned fruits and vegetables, according to grocerymen. The potted meats are used more in the Summer for picnic lunches and emergency meals. There are a number of reasons for this. Rural homemakers can meat so that they have a ready supply. The commercially canned meats are fairly expensive. Generally, they are not labeled according to U. S. meat grades. According to reports, low quality meat is used. The homemaker can obtain very little information on the quality of canned meat from the label. However, the products sold in interstate trade …

The Common Black Field Cricket: A Serious Pest In South Dakota, H.C. Severin Dec 1935

The Common Black Field Cricket: A Serious Pest In South Dakota, H.C. Severin

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The common black field cricket, Gryllus assimilis (Fabr.)* is not only a serious insect pest of certain field and garden crops in South Dakota, but in addition it is an important household pest because of the damage it does to fabrics such as wearing apparel, curtains, bedding, etc. While this species of cricket is omnivorous, the greater portion of its diet consists of vegetable matter. Many of our field and garden crops may be injured through the feeding activities of this cricket, but usually the damage done is most severe in alfalfa fields devoted to seed production. It is the …

Vitamin D In Milk, T.M. Olson, G.C. Wallis Dec 1935

Vitamin D In Milk, T.M. Olson, G.C. Wallis

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Milk still retains its enviable rating as our most nearly perfect food. It ranks alone as a superior food for infants, and is by no means of minor significance in the adequate nutrition of older children and adults. However, even with a liberal supply of milk, the problem of proper nutrition is not a simple one. A study of our public health statistics, and a consideration of the various factors stimulating refined nutritional research bear abundant evidence of the fact that our knowledge and practice of the science of nutrition is not as yet all that might be desired. The …

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, J. Muehlbeier Jun 1934

Reliability And Adequacy Of South Dakota Farm Price Data, J. Muehlbeier

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

The reliability and adequacy of South Dakota farm price data cannot be stated with any great degree of precision. The statistical measures of reliability in this analysis are based upon the conditions of simple sampling of which the conclusions cannot be stated in absolute terms but must be expressed in probability. The sampling as done by the Division of Crop and Livestock Estimates is known as weighted stratified sampling, a departure from simple sampling, but considered to result in greater representativeness. Recognizing the limitations of the measures in this study, certain conclusions can still be drawn concerning the reliability of …

An Economic Study Of Farms In The Spring Wheat Area Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen May 1934

An Economic Study Of Farms In The Spring Wheat Area Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

This is the first of a series of three circulars being published as progress reports of a five year study which was begun in 1930, on the economics of agriculture in the Spring Wheat Area of South Dakota. The study was started as a modified cost route in Potter County with 48 farmer cooperators keeping records, some of which were quite complete in that labor and feed records were also kept. During the first year a representative of the college lived at Gettysburg and visited the cooperators at least once each month to check on the completeness of the records …

Estimated Returns From Operating 800 Acres In The Spring Wheat Area Under Four Different Plans - A Method Of Determining What To Produce, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen May 1934

Estimated Returns From Operating 800 Acres In The Spring Wheat Area Under Four Different Plans - A Method Of Determining What To Produce, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

The relatively low prices farmers receive for their products, and the continued high costs of interest, taxes, and the products farmers buy, increase the need of study of factors which tend to give the best possible net returns from a farm business. The purpose of this circular is to discuss the relative profitableness of different enterprises on diversified farms in the Spring Wheat Area of South Dakota. The plan of the circular is to show the organization and to give the estimated returns of four farms, on each of which the enterprises are of different relative importance. Three of the …

Estimated Returns From Farms Of Large, Medium And Small Size Of Business In The Spring Wheat Areas Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen May 1934

Estimated Returns From Farms Of Large, Medium And Small Size Of Business In The Spring Wheat Areas Of South Dakota, C. M. Hampson, P. Christophersen

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Size of farm business is recognized by all farm management investigators and by many farmers as one of the most important factors making for success or failure in farming. A moderately large size of business, doubtless is more profitable in so-called normal times than is a small sized business. Size of business in this circular is not measured in acres only, as is common in certain sections where most of the land is fertile and tillable, and most of the farms are of the same type. Size of business cannot be measured accurately, nor by a single descriptive term such …

Wheat And Wheat By-Products For Laying Hens, W.C. Tully, J.B. Taylor May 1934

Wheat And Wheat By-Products For Laying Hens, W.C. Tully, J.B. Taylor

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

Wheat is the second largest grain crop in South Dakota and is grown extensively in many parts of the state. It has long been recognized as being second only to yellow corn as an individual grain for poultry. Wheat bran and middlings have for many years been a recognized part of starting, growing, and laying mashes for chick and poultry feeding but definite experimental work on their actual individual values seems to be lacking. As wheat is grown on so many farms, particularly in certain sections in the state, and as poultry is kept on approximately 85 per cent of …

Oil Of Chenopodium And Chenopodium Plants For The Eradication Of Round Worms In Swine, F. Leblanc, T. Wright, J.B. Taylor Mar 1934

Oil Of Chenopodium And Chenopodium Plants For The Eradication Of Round Worms In Swine, F. Leblanc, T. Wright, J.B. Taylor

Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)

1. The results of this series of tests indicate that if pigs are badly infested with worms, worming them once by an efficient method as soon as possible after weaning will reduce feed costs during the subsequent feeding period.
2. Worming the pigs a second time resulted in increased rather than decreased feed costs as compared with pigs wormed only once.
3. The results of two tests indicate that chenopodium plants may be used as a forage crop to eliminate worms and reduce grain and supplements required to produce 100 pounds of gain.
4. Cultural methods for development of chenopodium …

Chick Brooding, Feeding And Management, W. C. Tully Feb 1934

Chick Brooding, Feeding And Management, W. C. Tully

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Good Breeding for Egg Production. Good Housing. Proper Feeding. Sanitation and Management. These are the four fundamentals of successful poultry production. While it is true that the greatest need of the Northwest is better bred laying stock, neglect of any of these essentials will result in lowered income from the poultry enterprise. This circular is written to present a starting and growing ration that has been tested on thousands of chicks, including all those raised at the South Dakota experiment station for the last three years, as well as additional information on chick management.
