Bloat In Dairy Cattle, T. M. Olson

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Bloat is an abnormal accumulation of gases in the paunch or rumen, resulting in great distention of the organ with subsequent paralysis of its walls. Bloat has been known for more than a century. Trotter of Scotland in 1811 writing on the general view of agriculture speak of “the swelling of cattle by eating too great a quantity of clover, potatoes, turnips, or cabbages.” In recent years since legume pastures have become more widely used for dairy cattle, dairymen have become concerned about bloat. The danger from bloat has been an important deterrent in more general use of legumes as …

The annual income from poultry raising during the years 1935-39 was more than 15 million dollars which is more than $160 per farm. South Dakota ranks 21st in the United States in the number of chickens raised, and is the 12th leading turkey producing state. The gross income from poultry and eggs is usually not large on most farms but is well distributed and is used to meet many of the small expenses which come up throughout the year. In addition to paying grocery bills …

SDSU Extension Circulars

Almost three-fourths of the 83,000 Farm Operators in South Dakota Lease All or a Part of Their Land. These tenant operators, the owners of that land and agents who handle it constitute a high proportion of the people of the state. With a large and ever increasing amount of land in county, state, and federal ownership every citizen within the state is more or less affected by the manner in which the land is handled. As a consequence, leases and the leasing systems employed have some bearing on the economic and social welfare of practically every individual in the state. …

Selenium In Rocks, Soils, And Plants, Alvin L. M, Oscar E. Olson, Walter V. Searight May 1939

Selenium In Rocks, Soils, And Plants, Alvin L. M, Oscar E. Olson, Walter V. Searight

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

The selenium which is found in the soils of the Great Plains has been derived from geological formations, especially those formations deposited during Cretaceous time. The sedimentary rocks which make up the Cretaceous formations are the most important selenium bearers. The selenium which was laid down in these sedimentary formations has been carrie3d through the soil-forming processes and is found in the soils of certain areas. Plants growing ion these soils absorb the selenium which further finds its way into the tissues of animals that happen to feed upon the plants.

Times Look Better! The 1939 Outlook Is Mostly Favorable, S. W. Jones

SDSU Extension Circulars

The domestic demand for farm products in 1939 will be considerably better than in 1938, according to present indications. Industrial production during 1939 will average materially higher than in 1938 but not as high as in 1937. The improvement is expected to come mainly in the higher rate of production of automobiles, building, steel, textiles and miscellaneous consumers' goods. (See more in text.)

The Efficiency Of Churn Washing Method And The Keeping Quality Of Butter As Indicated By Yeast And Mold Counts, T. Allen Evans Jan 1939

The Efficiency Of Churn Washing Method And The Keeping Quality Of Butter As Indicated By Yeast And Mold Counts, T. Allen Evans

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Of all the equipment used in the manufacture of butter, no single piece has as close contact with the finished product as does the churn while at the same time no piece of equipment is more difficult to keep properly cleaned. The workers in the dairy industry have expended much time and effort attempting to build a churn which could be kept in a more satisfactory state, especially from a bacteriological point of view. As yet no satisfactory material for churn construction has been found to replace wood which at best is difficult to keep free of micro-organisms. Since it …

The Effect Of Orally Ingested Selenium Upon The Blood Picture, Feed Consumption And Growth Of The Normal Dog And The Effect Of Arsenic In Chronic Selenium Poisoning, Morris Rhian Jan 1939

The Effect Of Orally Ingested Selenium Upon The Blood Picture, Feed Consumption And Growth Of The Normal Dog And The Effect Of Arsenic In Chronic Selenium Poisoning, Morris Rhian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic selenium poisoning, commonly known as "Alkali Disease", is quite common in most of the states in the Great Plains area. Since the discovery that selenium is the cause of "Alkali Disease", as a result of a survey by Franke and others (1) in 1934, and the isolation of selenium from toxic grains by Robinson, there has been a great deal of work reported on the effects of selenium on the animal body. A summary of the work reported in studying selenium poisoning was published by Moxon (2) in 1937.

Soil Conservation : An Elementary Discussion For Use In Grade Schools, Ralph E. Hansen Sep 1938

Soil Conservation : An Elementary Discussion For Use In Grade Schools, Ralph E. Hansen

SDSU Extension Circulars

Problem: Soil erosion and water losses in various places in South Dakota have become a serious handicap in growing crops and producing livestock. Dust storms and swollen streams have represented a great loss of water and soil in this state during the past few years. Although South Dakota is a comparatively new state in agriculture, much of its land already is rapidly losing its productivity, and many acres of land have been injured by erosion. This condition creates a problem that faces the boys and girls, as well as their elders, in this state today. The problem is to save …
