Protein Feeds For The War Period, A. L. Moxon, E. L. Erickson, F. U. Fenn, G. C. Wallace
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
The shortage of high-protein feeds and protein supplements for livestock is becoming more acute every day. Supplies of animal protein are not large enough to meet present needs mainly because of the increased demand for them due to (1) greater use of protein feeds by livestock producers in order to provide more milk, meat, and eggs, and (2) the need for larger amounts of casein and other animal proteins, as well as certain vegetable proteins, in war industries. It has been estimated that the shortage of protein concentrates in the United States will exceed 1,810,000 tons for 1943.' Because of …

Turkey Manual, W. O. Wilson
Turkey Manual, W. O. Wilson
SDSU Extension Circulars
In the past, South Dakota turkey producers relied heavily upon shipped-in eggs as their source of poults. This was primarily due to three factors, (1) the industry was comparatively small and the demand was only moderate, (2) lateness in the season of available eggs to supply poults (3) lack of knowledge on the care of breeders. The tremendous increase in turkey production has brought about a change in this practice. Seventy-five percent of the state's turkey growers secured poults from their own breeding flock, according to a study made by the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. Some of the contributing …
Chick Care : His Life Is In Your Hands, Boyd A. Ivory
Chick Care : His Life Is In Your Hands, Boyd A. Ivory
SDSU Extension Circulars
The brooding period in many ways is the most critical and difficult period in the management of domestic birds. No poultry business can be successful over a period of time without a practical and efficient layer-replacement program. Chickens must be well grown before they can make a profitable return to their owners regardless of the poultry enterprise in which he is engaged. One of the most common causes of lost profits and failures in poultry keeping is the lack of knowledge and the ability to carry out a good chick-rearing program. The source of chicks, the time of brooding, and …

Plant Diseases Common, Destructive, Preventable In South Dakota (Revised), W.F. Buckhholtz
Agricultural Experiment Station Plant Pathology Pamphlets (1942-1962)
Abundant agricultural production is a victory goal and in South Dakota is based on an abundance of feed, forage and cash field crops and an adequate home vegetable and fruit supply. On the other hand, soil conservation and the maintenance of South Dakota’s agricultural productivity depends on a practice of moderate rather than wholesale over-cropping of cultivated land. Shortages of labor and machinery place a definite limit on the amount of really good farming that can be done it South Dakota for the duration of the war. One of the ways to insure maximum crop production from a minimum of …

New Hard Surfaced Floors For The Farm Poultry House, R. L. Patty, L. F. Larsen
New Hard Surfaced Floors For The Farm Poultry House, R. L. Patty, L. F. Larsen
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Experimental work on poultry house floors by the Agricultural Engineering department of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station has developed two new hard-surfaced floors that are very practical for the purpose. One is of soil-cement and the other of oil-surfaced soil mixture. Their principal advantage is their low cost. Cost of materials for these floors figures about one-third that for the conventional concrete floor. The time required to build them is about the same, and even with hired labor the total cost of building these floors should be only one-third as much as for concrete or even less.

Feed For Milk-Eggs Pork, R. A. Cave, G. A. Mcdonald, Richard Heeren, John M. Ryan
SDSU Extension Circulars
The biggest service that farmers can give to the nation in war is greater production of meat, milk and eggs. Uncle Sam is calling upon South Dakota farmers for greater production of these products throughout this winter and for next year. In many years of the past, it would not be possible for our state to provide this greater production but now it is different – we now have the greatest feed supply in our history, thanks to the bountifulness of nature last year. To use our vast feed supplies most efficiently- to get the maximum amount of human feed …

A Summary Of Livestock Marketing In South Dakota, W. P. Cotton
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
39 (41). For the five year period 1936-40 livestock sources were responsible for 78.7 percent of all farm cash income in South Dakota, exclusive of government payments. Of all the cash income from livestock sources the sales of the following species of animals accounted for specified percentages: Cattle, 32.7; hogs, 25.5; and sheep, 5.5 (See Figs. I and 2). The distribution of livestock in the state and the boundaries of the areas into which the state was divided for this study is shown by Figs. 3, 4 and 5. Cattle are distributed much more uniformly over the state, with the …

Beef Production : A Manual For 4-H Club Members, G. A. Mcdonald
Beef Production : A Manual For 4-H Club Members, G. A. Mcdonald
SDSU Extension Circulars
The first and most important step in the baby beef phase is to select the type of calf that will make the most economical gains and finally dress out a highly desirable carcass. The success and profit of the enterprise will depend on the conformation, feeding ability and quality of the calf selected. Suitable feeder calves for profitable baby beef production are generally the offspring from sires and dams of good beef type and breeding. As a rule it does not pay the cattle feeder to feed out the calves of common or nondescript breeding for baby beef, as the …

Insecticides For Victory Gardens, N. P. Larson
Insecticides For Victory Gardens, N. P. Larson
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Insects are directly responsible for the loss of 5 to 20 percent of garden products under average conditions; in some cases the loss is complete. While much of this loss may be prevented or reduced by tillage and weed destruction, it is frequently necessary to protect the growing garden with insecticides. The various common insecticides available are listed and the use of each is described. Special advantages and disadvantages of each are also given. Table 2 ( see back cover) shows the uses of several of the more common insecticides, while Table 1 ( see pages 8 and 9) lists …
