Fifteen Years Of Future Farmers Of America Progress In South Dakota 1929-1944, Arlington Eddy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The origin of the Future Farmers of America in South Dakota did not occur by chance. Instead, it grew from the desires and needs of farm and ranch boys enrolled in vocational agriculture in South Dakota high schools. Numerous vocational agriculture departments in the state had agriculture clubs preceding the organization of the F.F.A. in South Dakota. Many of them were planning and carrying to completion various activities now common to the F.F.A. in this state. However, these clubs lacked a coordinating agency such as a state association operated by and for representatives from their own group. W.P. Beard, state …

Calcium And Phosphorus Content Of Grasses At Different Stages Of Growth, G.F. Gastler, A.L. Moxon Jul 1944

Calcium And Phosphorus Content Of Grasses At Different Stages Of Growth, G.F. Gastler, A.L. Moxon

Agricultural Experiment Station Chemistry Pamphlets (1943-1944)

The attached tables and graph show the calcium and phosphorus content of Western Wheat grass {Agropyron smithii) and Blue Grama grass (Bouteloua, gracilis) at different stages of growth. The percentages are calculated on an air dr-/ basis which would be comparable with the moisture content of very dry hay. Tne values, therefore, represent the approximate calcium and phosphorus levels in hay made from these grasses ~f they are cut at the stages indicated in the graph and tables.

Bloat In Dairy Cattle, T. M. Olson Jun 1944

Bloat In Dairy Cattle, T. M. Olson

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

For many years bloat has been causing death among cattle. This loss of animals has been a severe tax on the livestock industry. Moreover, good pasture has been wasted because farmers feared that their cattle would bloat if they were turned out on legume crops, many of which are well adapted for grazing. In recent years organized experimental work has been conducted to determine the cause of causes of this trouble and to suggest practices that may prevent bloat.

Vitamins D And A In Alfalfa Hay, G. C. Wallis Jun 1944

Vitamins D And A In Alfalfa Hay, G. C. Wallis

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

Every farmer knows that adequate amount of vitamin D and A are needed in order to maintain vigorous health, good growth, and efficient production in his livestock. This need has been well established by carefully controlled experimental work and by farm observations. It brings into sharp focus problem of finding the most economical means of providing these important nutrients.

Cull Regularly For Increased Production, Boyd A. Ivory May 1944

Cull Regularly For Increased Production, Boyd A. Ivory

SDSU Extension Circulars

It is questionable whether or not it pays to keep a flock longer than the pullet year, since a hen lays 20 to 25 percent less eggs her second year than her first. Furthermore, this loss in production the second year takes place during the fall months when the price of eggs is usually the highest. Keeping a flock the second year also makes disease prevention and control more difficult. An increasing number of South Dakota poultry growers make it a rule to sell every hen over a year old every year. They get more eggs with less feed. They …

The Grasshopper Mite : Eutronbidium Trigonum (Hermann) : An Important Enemy Of Grasshoppers, H.C. Severin

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

Grasshopper damage is an important problem in large sections of the United States. The results of extensive damage in past years affected agricultural and horticultural pursuits as well as other occupations. One of the important biological checks to grasshoppers in this country is the grasshopper mite, Eutrombidium trigonum, for in its larval stage it is parasitic on grasshoppers and in its nymph and adult stages it preys on grasshopper eggs.

Self Feeders For Swine, Ralph L. Patty

SDSU Extension Circulars

The trend of modern methods of farming requires more time-saving machinery and equipment. This is particularly true of equipment for hog production. There is an ever increasing demand for better and time saving equipment in hog production. It was this demand for new ideas and plans for such equipment that led to the preparation of this circular. Plans in blueprint form are available from the Agricultural Extension Service for equipment shown in this circular when so stated at the end of the description. Please order by number. Most of these same plans will also be found listed in Extension Circular …

Soft Corn For Fattening Livestock, I. B. Johnson, L. E. Johnson, T. H. Wright Sep 1943

Soft Corn For Fattening Livestock, I. B. Johnson, L. E. Johnson, T. H. Wright

Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)

"To what class of livestock can I best feed my soft corn?" and "What is its value?" These are two questions frequently asked by farmers having a soft corn crop, one which they are not able to convert into silage or market at a satisfactory price. There have been about as many opinions as to its actual value per bushel as there were farmers who produced it. In an attempt to use the full growing season, many farmers have planted varieties of corn which need a longer growing period than exists in much of the State. Such varieties are more …

Farm Management Aspects Of Agricultural War Production In South Dakota, C.R. Hoglund Jun 1943

Farm Management Aspects Of Agricultural War Production In South Dakota, C.R. Hoglund

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

ncreasing demands for meat, milk, fats, cereals, and oils make it essential that South Dakota farmers adjust their individual programs to achieve maximum production. This increased production may be brought about by a fuller utilization of crop land and land otherwise left idle, by shifting from low to high nutrient production crops, by adjusting livestock feeding practices for a more efficient use of feed and by the adoption of other improved farm management practices.
