Systems Of Producing Fat Yearlings For South Dakota, William Clark Mccone Jan 1949

Systems Of Producing Fat Yearlings For South Dakota, William Clark Mccone

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

About twelve billion pounds of dressed beef and veal were produced in the United States in 1947 through the conversion of grassland crops into meat by cattle and these cattle lead all classes of American livestock in the consumption of grass and grassland crops. Grass usually represents the principal and cheapest feed for beef cattle. They utilize about one third of the permanent pastures and three fourths of the range areas. Pastures may be regarded as a costly source of feed only on highly productive farm lands, but their use in rotation with cultivated crops on such land is certain …

The Apparent Digestibility By Sheep Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Robert Manseau Jordan Jan 1949

The Apparent Digestibility By Sheep Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Robert Manseau Jordan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Grass is the greatest asset of the Northern Great Plains. Grass does and must serve as the basic feed for the flocks and herds of this area. Without grass, much of the Northern Great Plains would be waste land with little or no value. In the states of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, about 67 per cent of the total land is in pasture and hay. Seventy five to 95 per cent of the total feed needed by cattle and sheep in the Northern Plains states is furnished by pasture and roughage. With an ever-increasing demand …

The Effect Of Wrapping Material On Freezing Rate, Quality And Cooking Losses Of Beef Frozen And Stored In Home Freezer Units, James Robert Dynes Jan 1949

The Effect Of Wrapping Material On Freezing Rate, Quality And Cooking Losses Of Beef Frozen And Stored In Home Freezer Units, James Robert Dynes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Meat is an essential food in the daily menu of growing and working Americans. Due to meat production methods and population distribution, this meat must often be preserved for a considerable length of time. If better and more accessible storage methods and facilities were readily available, more meat could be used to great advantage in the diets of all people. It is for these reasons that constant effort is being put forth to find better and more efficient means for its preservation. Freezing as a method of preservation for perishable food products has been used for many years. Artificial freezing …

Correction Factors For Adjusting Weights Of Range Calves To A Constant Age, Christian Alfred Dinkel Jan 1949

Correction Factors For Adjusting Weights Of Range Calves To A Constant Age, Christian Alfred Dinkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In experimental beef cattle breeding work and commercial beef production it is desirable to know comparative weights of claves at a given age, usually at weaning age of around 200 days. Some workers have gone to considerable trouble weighing all calves at 200 or 205 days regardless of work involved. A few have weaned calves at a constant weight such as 500 pounds and made their comparisons on gain per day to test weight. These methods are usually impractical in herds kept under corn-belt conditions and practically impossible in herds maintained on western or north-central ranges. Weaning at a constant …

The Apparent Digestibility By Steers Of A Wintering Ration Consisting Of Prairie Hay Cut At Three Different Stages Of Maturity Supplemented With Oats And Soybean Oil Meal, George Emmett Staples

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Past experience in areas where periodic droughts occur has emphasized the importance of maintaining a production program which stresses hay and pastures, together with livestock which can utilize large amounts of roughage. A program of this type becomes in such areas if farming is to be stabilized and the soil preserved.

An Improved Method For The Determination Of Crude Fiber And Nitrogen Extract Of Feeds, Robert Alvin Wilcox Jan 1949

An Improved Method For The Determination Of Crude Fiber And Nitrogen Extract Of Feeds, Robert Alvin Wilcox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The crude fiber method in use today was originated in Germany by Henneberg and Stohmann (1) about 85 years ago and is known as the Weende method after the name of their experiment station. Their method consists of boiling a dried and ether extracted sample (about 1 gram) for 30 minutes in 200 ml. of a 1.25o/o sodium hydroxide solution. The residue is filtered off and washed free of alkali with hot water in a Gooch crucible prepared with a treated asbestos mat, dried in a 100 degree C oven, weighed, ashed and reweighed. The loss in weight upon ashing …

A Study Of The Heel Flies, Hypodermia Lineatum Devillers And Hypoderma Novis Degeer, In South Dakota, John A. Lofgren

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The heel flies or ox-warble flies and their larvae, commonly called cattle grubs or warbles, are among the most troublesome and costly insect pests of livestock producers in South Dakota. These parasites attack cattle almost exclusively although they may occur at times in other domestic and in wild animals. Infestations in man have been recorded, but these cases are quite rare. This work deals only with the occurrence of the parasites in cattle.

Nitrogen Distribution In The Corn Plant, Eugene I. Whitehead, Frank G. Viets, Alvin L. Moxon Jun 1948

Nitrogen Distribution In The Corn Plant, Eugene I. Whitehead, Frank G. Viets, Alvin L. Moxon

Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)

Inasmuch as oat hay containing potassium nitrate in excess of 1.5 percent is considered unsafe as cattle feed, some of the losses sustained in Sully, Potter, and Walworth counties may have been due to excess nitrates present in the cornstalks. Since nitrates or other nitrogen fractions (e.g. the alkaloids) are frequently associated with forage poisoning, it seemed advisable to further investigate the nitrogenous constituents of the corn plant. It is the purpose of this paper to present data collected at this laboratory relative to the changes in the nitrogenous constituents of field grown corn plants throughout the period from the …
