South Dakota Grasslands, Their Condition And Management, L. R. Albee, E. W. Klosterman, W. H. Burkitt, H. R. Olson
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
Statewide surveys of South Dakota grasslands have been made in 1940, 1942, and 1946. The stocking rates presented on the map (center pages) were determined from the 1946 survey, based upon the past ten years' actual use-grazing records from representative farms and ranches. The range and pasture condition method of study was introduced into the 1946 resurvey of South Dakota grassland. The condition approach is much more usable by stockmen and agricultural workers alike than former methods of making grassland inventories. The 1946 inventory of range and pasture condition shows South Dakota grasslands are near the peak of productivity. Above-average …

The Relative Accuracy Of One-Day And Three-Day Weights Of Range Cows, Leroy Henry Holt
The Relative Accuracy Of One-Day And Three-Day Weights Of Range Cows, Leroy Henry Holt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The weight of an animal is usually the most important measurement in assessing the results of livestock experiments. This is especially true with meat animals such as cattle, sheep, and hogs. The weight is measured by individual weightings is a variables that is influenced by many factors. In most experiments the weight desired is the average body weight under conditions being imposed by the experimental treatment. This weight can be measured only approximately, the error depending upon the precision of the scales, the care and accuracy

Lignin, Cellulose And Crude Fiber Changes In Maturing Western Wheatgrass: (Agropyron Smithii Rybd.), Chester R. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It can be said from observations that plants become more woody as they mature. A young plant is relatively tender and supple, whereas an older plant is tougher and has greater strength structure. The nature of this woodiness and its effect upon the digestibility of plants and plant products by animals is of some concern.
The Apparent Digestibility Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Arnold Bernard Nelson
The Apparent Digestibility Of Prairie Hay Harvested At Three Stages Of Maturity, Arnold Bernard Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
More land in the United States is used for grazing and hay production than for all other farm crops grown. Well-managed pastures and rangeland have always been recognized as an economical source of feed and recently have commanded much attention as an effective means of conserving soil resources and preventing erosion. In the states if North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana, about 67 per cent of the total land in farms and ranches is in pasture and hay. Over 60 per cent of the entire area of South Dakota and about 83 per cent of the area …
Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce
Carcass Differences In Inbred Lines And Linecrosses Of Swine, Ellis Andine Pierce
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A great amount of variation in the carcasses from butcher hogs proximal to two hundred and twenty pounds from different lines and breeds has become apparent in recent years. The average hog producer prefers the type of hog that gains quickly and economically and will net the most profit. The average consumer, however, prefers the type of carcass that has a high percentage of lean to fat. Today the dollar value of market hogs is determined more by the amount of finish they are carrying than by the quality of carcass. Since variations do exist in the carcasses from different …

Thinking Of Others At Christmas, Anna M. Wilson
Thinking Of Others At Christmas, Anna M. Wilson
SDSU Extension Circulars
A true gift is a joy to give and a pleasure to receive. Such a gift doesn't just happen, it grows. It takes thought and planning. Then it takes some doing. Gifts made at home will not stretch the purse strings too far, and they can be hand-tailored to the friend. The best gift may not be wrapped in tissue and ribbon-it might be an invitation to a Christmas tea party. Thinking of others will make Christmas the most joyous season of the year-as it should be.

Fertility Maintenance And Management Of South Dakota Soils, L. F. Puhr, W. W. Worzella
Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars (1920-1915)
A successful and profitable agriculture must depend upon a sound and permanent system of soil management. A program of sound soil management is necessary to conserve our soil resources in order to insure present and future stability in agriculture. Changes in the soil which make it less suitable for crop production are gradual processes. Some of these changes are depletion of soil organic matter, appearance of nitrogen and other nutrient deficiencies, deterioration in soil structure, increased susceptibility of the soil to wind and water erosion, failure of crops to grow and mature properly, and lower crop yields. South Dakota soils …
