Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen
Vitamin A And Carotene Requirements Of Fattening Beef Cattle, Thomas M. Hansen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
During the last 25 years, several experiments have been conducted to study the amount of vitamin A and carotene needed by cattle. More emphasis has been devoted to carotene since cattle rations contain varying amounts of this precursor of vitamin A. Increasing market demands for lightweight cattle have brought about changes in methods of feeding. Cattle are being fattened rapidly at young ages using rations which contain a large amount of concentrates. Such rations are often low in carotene and need vitamin A or carotene supplementation. Recently, several research workers have questioned the adequacy of present recommended vitamin A and …
A Linear Programming Approach To The Optimum Farm Organizations For Selected Farm Sizes Under Dryland And Partially Irrigated Conditions In The Missouri Slope Region Of The Oahe Unit, Kenwood James Gors
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
What will the optimum farm organizations yield in terms of net income to the farmer? The purpose of this study was to answer this question for the selected farm sizes. The question was answered through the use of linear programming. The selected farm sizes were 640, 1280, and 2560 acre dryland farms and 560, 1080, and 2240 acre partially irrigated farms. The supply of labor available was 240 man hours per month and 2500 total man hours per year from the farm operator and his family and also whatever more could be profitably hired. The farm was completely operator owned …

Identification Of Dimethyl Selenide As A Respiratory Product From Organisms Administered Selenium Compounds, James Donald Froom
Identification Of Dimethyl Selenide As A Respiratory Product From Organisms Administered Selenium Compounds, James Donald Froom
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dimethyl selenide mercuric chloride complex was prepared and characterized. Dimethyl selenide as released from this complex was gas chromatographed as a reference standard in the identification of dimethyl selenide respired from organisms administered selenium compounds. Gas chromatographic evidence in which the retention time of the reference standard was compared with the unknown indicated that selenium compounds are metabolized by organisms with the elimination of dimethyl selenide as an end product of respiration. Rats administered sodium selenite intraperitoneally respired an odorous gas which was shown to be dimethyl selenide. Aspergillus mold administered sodium selenite yielded a volatile product which appeared as …
Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen
Synchronization Of Estrus In Swine, Robert D. Fritschen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Greater production and efficiency of management in the livestock industry has increased the need for artificial breeding of farm animals. The solution to the development of artificial insemination in any species depends greatly on being able to preserve the semen for several days with minimum loss in fertilizing capacity. Synchronization of estrus could make swine artificial insemination practical and economical. Four separate experiments were conducted with a total of 176 gilts in an attempt to synchronize estrus and conception in gilts by use of exogenous hormones. The first experiment was conducted with 48 gilts. The two hormones used in this …
The Effect Of Erythromycin On Feed Consumption, Rate Of Gain, Feed Efficiency And Fecal Bacteria Of Growing Swine, Lawrence Eugene Carson
The Effect Of Erythromycin On Feed Consumption, Rate Of Gain, Feed Efficiency And Fecal Bacteria Of Growing Swine, Lawrence Eugene Carson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
An experiment consisting of three separate trials was conducted to determine the effect of adding erythromycin thiocyanate at various levels to growing-finishing swine rations. The study was concerned with the effect of the antibiotic on feed palatability, feed consumption, rate of gain, feed efficiency, and fecal bacteria when added to various rations fed to growing-finishing swine. It was concluded that erythromycin stimulated gains and improved feed efficiency when added to protein supplements at 25 grams per ton even though it decreased the acceptability of the supplement initially. When erythromycin was added to the supplement at 50 grams per ton palatability …

South Dakota Range : Its Nature And Use, James K. Lewis, Leslie R. Albee, Paul L. Howard
SDSU Extension Circulars
The American Society of Range Management was created in 1947 to foster advancement in the science and art of grazing land management. The Society's committee for cooperation with Youth Organizations developed a basic manual, "Range Its Nature and Use" in 1957, outlining the basic principles of range management in a logical order. The material used in this manual has been adapted to meet fundamental range needs and problems in South Dakota. This South Dakota manual has been designed and arranged to present range management information in a progressive step by step order to youth groups and others interested in management …

A Comparison Of Some Limnological Changes Caused By The Brookings Sewage Treatment Plant On Six-Mile Creek And The Big Sioux River, Richard Ruelle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: In the days of the early pioneers in South Dakota and other sparsely settled areas, there was no problem in finding a sufficient supply of water for drinking, cooking, and washing purposes. The problems of waste disposal were taken care of by the microorganisms in the soil, the microorganisms easily being able to keep pace with the few settlers. As cities and towns began to form, usually along a stream where there was an abundant supply of fresh water, sewage disposal became a growing problem. The easiest way to get rid of the sewage was to dump it into …

Effectiveness Of An Aspergillus Oryzae Culture On The Preservation Efficiency And Feeding Value Of Alfalfa-Brome Haylage Stored In Gas-Tight And Concrete Stave Silos, Samuel C. Perry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
High-quality forage is essential in feeding dairy cattle if dairymen intend to increase milk production or to maintain a high level of production. Problems of preserving high-quality forage for the winter feeding of livestock occur each year. The preservation of legumes and grasses as hay is governed by a number of factors: (1) curing weather, (2) state of maturity of the crops, and (3) other factors such as equipment available and methods of handling the crop. The inability of dairymen to control these factors results in heavy nutrient loses in the hays during the curing process due primarily to leaching …

Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports
This report marks the completion of the second year of research at this farm. Experimental work was continued in the areas of fertility and cultural practices, plant disease control, crop management, and crop variety testing. Investigations were expanded into corn plant populations, potassium deficiency, plant breeding and genetic studies on corn, grasses, legumes, sorghum and soybeans. Livestock research was initiated in the spring of 1962 when 106 feeder pigs were placed in three temporary buildings constructed for this purpose. Results of this trial are summarized in this report. Ninety(90) fall pigs have been started as a continuation of this experiment.

Feeding The Dairy Herd, Ervin Kurtz, Hollis Hall, Howard Voelker
SDSU Extension Circulars
Dairy cows, in order to make milk in large quantities, must be supplied with liberal amounts of the raw material from which milk can be made. That means good feed. The average production of South Dakota milk cows for 1961 was 5,700 pounds of milk and 205 pounds of butterfat. Much of this relatively low production is due to poor feed and lack of enough feed. Production and feed records shown in table 5 reveal that one way to get increased production is to give the cows more feed. Feed is the greatest single item of expense in producing milk. It …

Symbols Of Christmas, Kay Sharp Nelson
Symbols Of Christmas, Kay Sharp Nelson
SDSU Extension Circulars
People, when happy, express themselves in many ways. Traditions, customs, and symbols of Christmas have come to America from almost as many lands as we have peoples, brought here by our forefathers and observed, with only slight modification, down through the years. Traditions are the unwritten stories, beliefs, and activities that are handed down from generation to generation, customs so long continued that they almost become the force of law. Symbols are objects (animate or inanimate) that represent emblems, figures, or understanding such as a creed or belief. The symbols are used to express traditions.
