South Dakota Controlled Environment Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Louis Lubinus
South Dakota Controlled Environment Poultry Housing, Boyd Bonzer, Louis Lubinus
SDSU Extension Circulars
An efficient, practical poultry house is an asset to a farm. It need not be expensive to give good results. Sometimes a building already on the farm can be remodeled inexpensively to serve the needs of hens; however, for larger flocks seriously consider new housing. A poultry house must protect the birds from the hot sun in summer, cold temperatures in winter, and temperature extremes in spring and fall. It must also provide for moisture removal and be a comfortable, dry place for the hens. Such a house will increase production lower feed cost, produce cleaner eggs, and save labor. …

An Appraisal Of The Use Of Soil Survey Information As The Basis For Valuing Land For Tax Purposes In Spink County, South Dakota, Donald Dean Patterson
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
There is, however, strong justification for enacting modifications in the structure of the property tax and seeking means of strengthening its administration. Historical trends are of special interest when studying the property tax because it has survived with few modifications during a period of changing economic conditions. Since its adoption in Colonial times, the nation's economy has passed from the agricultural to the present industrial stage. Many of today's property tax problems are related to those gradual changes in the economy of the country and in the needs of its citizens. These aspects of the property tax are also related …
Characteristics Of Chicken Wastes And Disposal By Lagooning, Charles Roger Wieting
Characteristics Of Chicken Wastes And Disposal By Lagooning, Charles Roger Wieting
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disposal of poultry manure is becoming a greater problem as confinement of bird increases, flocks become larger, and poultry acreages decrease. Also, poultry production units are moving closer to urban areas, necessitating greater sanitation practices. Water pollution caused by surface runoff of farm animal wastes has caused additional concern for proper disposal methods. Several methods of disposal of poultry manure that have been proposed as solutions include: digesting, lagooning, field spreading as a liquid, field spreading of fresh droppings, drying, and composting. Before facilities for adequate treatment of animal wastes can be designed, the chemical, physical, and biological properties of …

Dietary Selenium And Arsenic Additions In The Life Cycle Of Laying Hens, Nirwan Tilak Thapar
Dietary Selenium And Arsenic Additions In The Life Cycle Of Laying Hens, Nirwan Tilak Thapar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Economic losses from plants grown on seleniferous soils have been reported in the literature for the last 30-35 years. The overall magnitude of such losses will never be known, but to individual gerdsmen they often meant financial ruin. The earliest report of conditions indicative of selenium poisoning was by Madison (1856) as indicated by Franke in 1934. Selenium toxicity has attracted much attention in Wyoming and South Dakota in particular, where in several areas the soil contains unusually high levels of selenium. This element is absorbed and concentrated in various parts of plants. From there it may be further transferred …

The Carbohydrate Composition And In Vitro Digestibility Of Western Hheatgrass At Various Growth Stages As Determined By Leaf Number And Cutting Date, Dennis L. Schentzel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the major factors influencing the nutritional value of grass is stage of maturity. The relationship of lignification to maturity and plant digestibility has been studied extensively. One of the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of stage of maturity on hemicellulose content of western wheatgrass and further the content of its component sugars. Western wheat grass is a rhizomatous cool season perennial grass which is very important in South Dakota ranges. Another purpose of this study is to note whether cutting date and leaf number are good measures of the stage of maturity as measured …
The Influence Of Carcass Maturity And Marbling On Beef Muscle Pigments And Color, John R. Romans
The Influence Of Carcass Maturity And Marbling On Beef Muscle Pigments And Color, John R. Romans
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Consumer acceptance of beef and Federal beef grades are dependent to a large extent upon color. There may or may not be a scientific basis for this. It has not been definitely shown that color =, in itself, has any effect on the palatability of meat, yet color is used as an indicator of beef quality. Meat pigment is composed largely of the chromo proteins myoglobin and hemoglobin. Factors other than the amount of pigment presents in beef muscle may influence its color. Fat and water content of the muscle may also play a role. This study was designed to …
Comparison Of Alternative Beef Cattle Systems For Western South Dakota Ranches, Grant L. Cornelius
Comparison Of Alternative Beef Cattle Systems For Western South Dakota Ranches, Grant L. Cornelius
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
Speculation often arises among ranchers that an increase in size of operation, a change from one type of system to another, or a modification of the present type of system may be profitable. This speculation is caused by cost and price changes which reduce net returns and make other types of operations appear to be more profitable. The objective of this study is to develop cost and return estimates of common types of cattle ranching systems and thereby determine whether such speculation is well founded.

The results of this work prior to 1954 were reported in South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station Circulars 104 and 107.
Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick
Influence Of Proportions Of Concentrates To Roughage With Various Feed Additives On The Feedlot Performance Of Growing And Finishing Steers, Wayne Bernard Mcgillick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In any feeding operation considerable attention should be given to the selection of a proper ration. A ration that will produce the most rapid gain will not necessarily produce the most economical gain. Rate of gain and fattening depend on the intake of digestible energy in excess of maintenance when the ration contains adequate amounts of other essential nutrients. Since many feed additives have become available in recent years, it is important to know their effects with various types of rations. Diethylstillbestrol have been reported to consistently improve gain and feed efficiency. Other feed additives have not been investigated as …

Pork Carcass Quantity And Quality Components As Influenced By Live Weight, Robert Charles Fletcher
Pork Carcass Quantity And Quality Components As Influenced By Live Weight, Robert Charles Fletcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The weight at which hogs should be marketed is a controversial issue confronting the swine industry. The producer is prompted by the nutritionist to market hogs at which feed efficiency is most desirable. The producer normally markets at heavier weights as fewer animals are needed to attain the desired net sales. However, not only do lighter hogs produce more gain on less feed, but generally they produce a carcass with less fat and a greater portion of lean. This lighter carcass produces the weight wholesale cuts which sell at a premium price and leaner retail cuts which are more desirable …

Build Financial Security, Mildred Novotny
Build Financial Security, Mildred Novotny
SDSU Extension Circulars
Financial security means different things to different people. Some families and individuals feel secure if they have a steady job, own their home, or if they are free from debt. Whatever financial security means to you, it is likely associated with peace of mind and confidence that you can provide for your family's needs, desires, and responsibilities. No one can foretell your expenses of a Iifetime, but you can expect a basic pattern of expenses during the family life cycle. A plan for meeting these expenses is the first step toward building financial security.

Characterization Of Staphylococcus Species Isolated From Raw Milk With Special Reference To The Enterotoxigenic Coagulase-Positive Types, Adnan M. Ammouri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Numerous reports from many parts of the world have described the occurrence of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning. Some studies have incriminated raw milk as a reservoir of the staphylococcus organisms as the vehicle of transmission. Recently Cheddar cheese has been implicated as the contaminating agent in food poisoning outbreaks traced to dairy products. The frequency of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning has stimulated interest in the characterization of members of the staphylococcus genus. The strains particularly important are those capable of production an enterotoxin. In order to determine the strains of staphylococcus organisms isolated from raw milk which are …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Shrink-Resistant And Antibacterial Finishes On Wool Blankets After Repeated Launderings, Coila M. Janecek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Wool blankets are important to the economy of the state since South Dakota is one of ten leading states in wool production. Wool’s greatest competitor, synthetic fibers, has increased in production from 85.2 million pounds in 1949 to 470.5 million pounds in 1958, an increase of approximately 550 percent. This competition by synthetic fibers has resulted in the wool industry undertaking intensive re-search to develop finishes that would improve the quality of wool products. Results of South Dakota and Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Stations research indicated that wool blankets ranked highest of all fiber types in warmth qualities, however, shrinkage in …
The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Microflora Of Raw Milk, Jaswant Singh
The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Microflora Of Raw Milk, Jaswant Singh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The proper handling of milk samples prior to bacterial analysis has been somewhat of a problem to dairy processors of South Dakota. There have been, and still are, many queries by these people about the treatment of o milk sample prior to the determination of a bacterial count. Should the milk samples be frozen prior to determining the number of bacteria? If it is feasible, what effect will the freezing have on the number of bacteria found? No tangible information about this problem has been found in the literature. Standard procedure emphasize mainly the icing of milk sample before analyzing …
Comparative Study Of Milk Quality Tests On Manufacturing Grade Raw Milk, Donald L. Wallace
Comparative Study Of Milk Quality Tests On Manufacturing Grade Raw Milk, Donald L. Wallace
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One criterion used to determine the quality of milk is based upon its bacterial content. This immediately emphasizes the problems of determining milk quality. Bacteriological tests are, at best, only estimates of the number or the activity of the organisms present. Since its introduction to South Dakota dairy farms, the bulk tank has continued to increase in popularity. Its increased acceptance has caused new problems in determining milk quality. The bulk tank allows the farmer to cool the milk faster and more efficiently than ever before, thereby limiting bacterial growth. Quality tests should not only differentiate between good and poor …
