Fabrics Worth Noting: Deep-Pile Fabrics, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Fabrics Worth Noting: Deep-Pile Fabrics, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
During recent fall seasons we've seen deep-pile fabrics used in coats, jackets, collars, cuffs, and accessories. They've also been used as liners in carcoats, jackets, and all-weather coats. Some are furlike, with mink markings and simulated guard hairs. Man-made fibers also can imitate seal, fox, beaver, or leopard. Other deep-pile fabrics are frankly fake, and appear in colors never worn by any animal.

Range Seedlings: Kinds That Succeed And Kinds That Fail, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
You may want to seed a tract back to the native grasses because of the kind of land and your grazing needs on a year-round basis. Such range seedings are made with a mixture of the taller native grasses-those that once grew on the area to be seeded. These taller perennial natives, if once lost, are very slow to re-establish themselves. Small patches often can be seen above back-slopes in road right-of-ways, especially in range areas.

South Dakota Agriculture And Its Problems, South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, Department Of Economics, South Dakota State University
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The significant characteristics of the economy of South Dakota are: (1) the dominant role of agriculture in the state (2) the erratic nature of its agricultural production and (3) the decrease in economic activity and population as one moves from the southeastern to the northwestern part of the state. In I960, 61 percent of the population was classified as rural by the Census Bureau. This includes towns under 2,500 population. Only North Dakota has a greater percentage of its population living in rural areas The saying that "you can't keep them home on the farm" is as appropriate to South …

"Proper" usually means appropriate or right. In range livestock production Proper Use requires careful regulation of the stocking rate; including, at times, no stocking if deferment of grazing is opportune.
Evaporation Reduction Investigation Pactola Reservoir, South Dakota , 1962-1963, Agricultural Experiment Station
Evaporation Reduction Investigation Pactola Reservoir, South Dakota , 1962-1963, Agricultural Experiment Station
Agricultural Experiment Station Technical Bulletins (1939-2011)
The magnitude of water loss due to evaporation from reservoirs, lakes, ponds, and rivers for the 17 western states has been estimated to be roughly the amount of water sufficient to provide a 6-inch layer of water over an area the size of South Dakota. Increasing demand for water has stimulated interest and research in the use of a monolayer film for water conservation. Among other things, previous experiments demonstrated that large reservoirs could be covered with a monolayer film under favorable wind conditions and that the presence of the film reduced evaporation. To study the effect of a monolayer …

Shopping Hints For Buying Clothes For Tots, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
In buying children’s clothing, care required, durability, and cost are important considerations, but don't forget how a child feels about his clothes. Children grow fast. As they move from one stage to the next, their clothes must allow for this growth too. Select clothes that are designed for comfort, activity, growth and personal development.

SDSU Extension Circulars
Farmers in the proposed Oahe irrigation area of east-central South Dakota could have water available for irrigation within about 10 years. In less time, however, they must decide if they want to convert part of their dryland to irrigated farming. Material presented here is for comparing representative farms of five sizes in Lake Plains (Brown and Spink Counties) and Missouri Slope (Sully and Potter Counties) areas as shown on the map. Three farm sizes are considered for Lake Plains: 480 acres, 800 acres and 1,280 acres. Two sizes are considered for Missouri Slope: 1,280 acres and 2,560 acres. General dryland …

International Trade In Cattle And Beef Products With Emphasis On The Effects Of The European Economic Community On The South Dakota Economy, Harold F. Bjarnson
Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The purpose of this thesis is to estimate the extent to which selected European Economic Community (EEC) agricultural policy alternatives would affect United States imports and exports of cattle and beef products, and to hazard conclusions concerning the effects of the various EEC policies on the South Dakota cattlemen. This involves an examination of United States trade in these commodities and of alternative Common Market policies and the future trade patterns which would result from each. It is hoped that the facts assembled herein concerning international trade in cattle and beef products will be of assistance to South Dakota ranchers, …
Beef Marketing Costs And Margins, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Beef Marketing Costs And Margins, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Supplying beef every day of the year to over 190 million consumers is the business of millions of ranchers and farmers and thousands of marketing agencies Farmers and ranchers start the production phase by growing the cattle and finishing them to slaughter weight. The marketing agencies — terminal markets, auctions, truckers, dealers. slaughterers, packers, wholesalers, brokers and retailers — provide the facilities and services required to move beef from the ranch and farm to the consumers at the time and place and in the form they desire.
Economic Comparison Of Irrigated And Dryland Farming In Central South Dakota, R. D. Helfinstine
Economic Comparison Of Irrigated And Dryland Farming In Central South Dakota, R. D. Helfinstine
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
Completion of Oahe dam across the Missouri river near Pierre, South Dakota, means that landowners in east-central South Dakota must soon decide whether to use or not to use water stored in Oahe reservoir for irrigation. In making this decision landowners and other interested persons want to know if irrigation farming will be more profitable than dryland farming and what problems will be involved in the changeover. Farming in central South Dakota has been a high risk venture because of variations and low level of rainfall. Irrigation is one means of stabilizing and increasing production and incomes from farms in …
Where The Consumer's Beef Dollar Goes, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
Where The Consumer's Beef Dollar Goes, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Consumers often believe the prices they pay for beef are high in relation to the farmer's returns. Farmers often believe the prices they receive are low in relation to prices of meat at retail. Why is there such a wide difference in the price per pound of a live animal at the farm and for the retail cuts from that animal? Since the price of beef animals fluctuates rapidly and since prices are constantly changing, it is impossible to stop the price-making process to examine how it functions at a particular time. In order to better understand the relationship of …

Spatial Analyses Of The Flow Of Slaughter Livestock In 1955 And 1960, J. Havlicek, R. L. Rizek, G. G. Judge
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
In this study attention is focused on the spatial aspects of slaughter livestock movements from production to slaughtering. Given the regional levels of production, slaughtering and the costs of moving one unit of various types of slaughter livestock from any one region to another region, this study is concerned with ascertaining the regional price differentials, and the volume and direction of regional imports and exports that are consistent with minimizing the total cost of moving the livestock from production to slaughter. In addition, questions about the consequences of changes in the existing structure of the livestock economy may be evaluated …

Spatial Analyses Of The Meat Marketing Sector In 1955 And 1960, G. G. Judge, J. Havlicek, R. L. Rizek
Research Bulletins of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (1887-2011)
The livestock products sector is a complex composed of the activities of production, farm marketing, slaughtering, distribution and consumption. The level of each of these activities varies spatially and thus regional imbalances are generated which make necessary product flows between the geographical areas. Within this setting this study is concerned with an interregional analysis of the livestock meat sector of the U. S. economy. Thus, spatial slaughter-consumption relations will be basic observations for this analysis. In this study regional demands are reflected by price dependent demand relations or specific estimates of consumption. Regional supplies are dressed carcass weights of livestock …

On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L. J. Kortan
On-The-Farm Swine Selection, L. J. Kortan
SDSU Extension Circulars
In attempts to make selection more effective, swine breeders have become increasingly conscious of the importance of a good swine breeding program and of the part that heredity plays in improving performance and carcass quality. Breeders no longer select breeding stock on the basis of sight alone. Modern selection programs emphasize performance records and carcass cut-out values. This is desirable because research has indicated that visual inspection alone cannot identify animals which are genetically superior. Good feeding and management can result in larger, faster growing litters. However, these improvements in nutrition and management do not become a part of a …
