Evaluation Of And Tentative Design Criteria For Anaerobic Lagoons As A Method Of Swine Manure Disposal In South Dakota, David Richard Curtis
Evaluation Of And Tentative Design Criteria For Anaerobic Lagoons As A Method Of Swine Manure Disposal In South Dakota, David Richard Curtis
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The problem of disposal of animal wastes has increased with modern methods of mass producing hogs, poultry, and other livestock and livestock products. With the increase popularity of confinement housing and the purchase of feed, less land is needed to raise more livestock and less land is available for disposal of the manure produced. Several methods for the disposal of hog manure have been suggested by various authors I the fields of agriculture and engineering. These proposed solutions include: field spreading, drying, composting, and lagooning. The purpose of this research was: to determine the extent to which lagoons were being …
Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman
Suitability Of Cheese Whey As A Substrate For Vitamin B12 Production By Propionibacterium Shermanii, Lloyd B. Bullerman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Disposal of waste is a major problem confronting the food industry today. These wastes are of varied composition and origin. One such material is cheese whey. Most of the surplus whey is considered to be and handled as an industrial waste, and disposed of in some manner. Whey is a by-product of cheese making. Since 90% of the starting volume of milk remains as whey after cheese manufacture, annual production of whey is large. Herein lies a large part of the whey problem, the fact that the actual consumption of whey is a small part of the total production. If …
Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick
Comparisons Of Ear Corn And Shelled Corn In Various Types Of Rations For Finishing Cattle, Gary Bruce Haiwick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Ruminants were once considered placid animals with the rumen serving as a storehouse for the feeds harvested when favorable weather and freedom from predatory animals permitted, and then retiring to a relatively safe place to ruminate and digest the stored feed. The large capacity and microbial digestion within the rumen enable ruminants to consume and utilize roughages efficiently. A large number of experiments have been conducted during the past several years to determine the effects of proportion of concentrates to roughages on rate and efficiency of production by cattle. Alfalfa hay is widely used in finishing rations for cattle and …
Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart
Effects Of B Vitamin Deficiencies On Energy Metabolism Of The Chick, William Clarence Lockhart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Approximately two decades ago Robertson et al. (1948) reported that high-energy diets supported faster growth of young chicks with an improvement in feeding efficiency. This seemed to open an era in poultry nutrition in which much work was conducted in order to establish the quantitative relationships between dietary energy levels and nutrients. With current emphasis on the energy content of the diet, a knowledge of those factors which interfere with the most efficient utilization of energy is important. Nutritional imbalance was shown by Sure (1941) to decrease the net energy or productive energy content of the diet. The B complex …
A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
A Study Of The Food Practices, Economic Position, And Conception Of Health On The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Kenneth H. Skogen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Teton Dakota Indians of the northern Great Plains have stirred the imagination of the people in America since they were first encountered by the early explorers. The frontiersmen found them living in the woodlands of the western Great Lakes where they were settled farmers. A century of warfare between the Chippewa and the Dakotas finally came to an end when the former group had occupied the woodland farms of northern Minnesota and the latter had migrated on to the plains. After wandering and fighting as they retreated westward, the Teton Dakotas were gradually transformed from peaceful woodsmen into skilled …
Structural Relationships For National And Regional Production Of Beef Calves, John E. Trierweiler
Structural Relationships For National And Regional Production Of Beef Calves, John E. Trierweiler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Notable changes have occurred in recent years that have produced basic changes in the beef industry. Structural relationships that existed for the producer-feeder are not necessarily significant in the operation of the cow-calf operator or the feed-lot operator. Structural economic models, which also can be used for forecasting, will be developed for the number of beef calves born in the United States and by specific homogeneous regions of production. The economic models will be tested for their ability to forecast the number of beef calves born during specific time periods. There has been a steady upward trend in both beef …

A Social System Analysis Of The Changing Food Practices Of The Teton Dakota Indians, 1800-1900, Norma R. Seerley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Food is a necessary element for satisfying a basic need of man. Without it, man could not exist. All of these foods have caloric values and vitamin content, and all are available to the various societies. A society also defines the purpose and emphasis to be given food. It may be a means for stilling hunger or getting nutrition; it may regard eating as a duty or virtue, or as a gustatory pleasure, or even as a social or religious communion. The Dakota’s choice of foods was originally fashioned by the kinds of foods available. Through recordings in history, the …
Genetic Components And Phenotypic Relationships Of Blood Constituents And Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Lowell Lewis Wilson
Genetic Components And Phenotypic Relationships Of Blood Constituents And Production And Carcass Traits In Beef Cattle, Lowell Lewis Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The production and marketing of meat is the world’s largest agriculturally related industry in terms of employment and gross product value. Thirty-one billion pounds or 30 percent of the total world supply of all types of meats, including poultry products, were consumed in the United States during 1963. Approximately 45 percent of this meat was beef and an additional 2.7 percent was veal. In order to retain the present advantage, all phases of the beef industry must continually search for improvements in production and marketing practices which would reduce the cost per edible unit or increase the quality of the …
A Thematic Approach To John Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle, James W. Grinnell
A Thematic Approach To John Steinbeck's In Dubious Battle, James W. Grinnell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to provide the reader, particularly the undergraduate, with an aid for studying John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle. In the course of this theses these four themes, namely, the phalanx theory, the concept of leadership and of ownership, and non-teleological thought, are examined first in Steinbeck’s writing in general, and then in novel In Dubious Battle in particular. Because the reader, including the undergraduate student of literature, usually does not have the time to read more than two or possibly three works by a given author, he may not be able to establish the relative …
The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert
The Effect Of Change In Moisture Content On The Load Carrying Capacity Of Three Member Nailed Wood Joints, William Theodore Welchert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis involves the study of the effect of change in moisture content on the load carrying capacity of three member nailed wood joints. New wood truss designs developed today can be tested with truss breaking equipment. Precise structural data on wood joints in extended service conditions are inadequate to justify enthusiasm for design precision. In agricultural construction and other utility buildings, wood-nailed trusses are extensively used because of their simplicity and economy. The weakest and most unpredictable parts of a nailed-wood truss are likely to be in the joints. Thus, the logical point for design improvement is the joint. …
A Modified Voges-Proskauer Method Of Determining Diacetyl In Dairy Cultures, Dwain Finkenbiner
A Modified Voges-Proskauer Method Of Determining Diacetyl In Dairy Cultures, Dwain Finkenbiner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dairy scientists have known for a number of years that diacetyl is one of the principle flavor components of butter, buttermilk, and cheese cultures. Of the tests which have been introduced to determine diacetyl, one of the first was the heavy metal gravimetric method. This procedure involved distillation of the diacetyl from the mother substance. The most common derivative formed was nickel dimethylglyoximate. Principle disadvantage of this method were that large amounts of sample were required for steam distillation when the products were low in diacetyl. It was also a time consuming procedure because the steam distillation could take as …

An Analytical Study Of The Degree And The Nature Of Association Between Problem Recognition And The Personal Characteristics Of Farm Operators In Lake County, South Dakota, Amir Khalili
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The distribution of farm income depends greatly upon resources available to individual farm operators and their ability to combine resources profitably. The consistency low cash farm receipts from marketing in Lake County as compared to other counties in economic area 4-B in 1959 and 1960, and the widespread low farm incomes in the distribution of rural family incomes in his county indicate that a great proportion of the farm families in this area have not made appropriate adjustments to changing economic, technological, and production factors. The widespread incidence of low incomes in this area might indicate that low income farm …

Meal Or Pelleted Barley Rations, The Effect Of Shaded Feeders And Waterers For Growing-Finishing Pigs On Pasture, J.W. Mccarty, R.W. Seerley, Albert Dittman
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
This trial was conducted at the Eureka Station which is an area of the state where barley is relatively more easily available as a swine feed than corn. Barley has been shown to have about 90 percent of the feeding value of corn when properly supplemented. Barley has higher protein content than corn but also has a higher fiber content. One means which has been used to make this otherwise excellent feed more useful is to pellet complete ground mixed barley rations. Results have been variable with respect to improve d pig gains and feed efficiency when bar ley rations …

Supplemental Vitamins And Antibiotics In Drinking Water For Swine, R.W. Seerley, M.E. Wastell, V.L. Fritz
Supplemental Vitamins And Antibiotics In Drinking Water For Swine, R.W. Seerley, M.E. Wastell, V.L. Fritz
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
Can a balanced diet be economically provided to swine by including certain nutrients in the drinking water? Traditionally swine diets have been developed by including the essential nutrients and growth additives to the air dry free-choice or self-fed rations. Water soluble microingredients have been added to drinking water for therapeutic treatment, but nutrients have not been commonly added to water under general feeding conditions. However, the same principle is applied when water is mixed with a ration and fed as a liquid. Theoretically, feeding water dispersible micronutrients and additives in water and macroingredients in a dry mixture should support good …

The Failure Of Nitrate Or Nitrate In Drinking Water To Affect Growth Or Reproduction In Swine, R.J. Emerick, R.W. Seerley
The Failure Of Nitrate Or Nitrate In Drinking Water To Affect Growth Or Reproduction In Swine, R.J. Emerick, R.W. Seerley
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
Some sources of water for livestock have been found to contain relatively high levels of nitrate. Although levels of nitrate above 300 ppm of nitrate nitrogen are known to exist, they occur infrequently. The experiments reported herein were conducted to determine the effects of various levels of nitrate or nitrite in drinking water on growing-finishing pigs, and gilts from weaning through gestation and lactation. Results obtained from the feeding of sodium nitrate at levels as high as 300 ppm of nitrate nitrogen in the drinking water of growing-finishing swine have been reported previously (Animal Science Mimeo Series 63-6). The level …

Swine Housing Research - Southeast Experiment Farm, R.W. Seerley, H.G. Young, J.F. Frederikson
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
The development of the Southeastern Experimental Farm has created the opportunity for studies in swine housing management. Initial steps taken to develop a program were the construction of three temporary structures, which were described in the 1963 Animal Science Mimeo Series. Results of the first summer study (A.S. Mimeo 63 -1) were reported. Daily gains and feed required per pound of gain were approximately the same among pigs on slotted floor, concrete floor with slotted dunging alley and concrete floor with bedding. More labor was required for the conventional concrete floor and sloping floor than was required for the completely …

Supplemental Lysine And Methionine In Finishing Swine Rations, B.A. Eason, R.W. Seerley
Supplemental Lysine And Methionine In Finishing Swine Rations, B.A. Eason, R.W. Seerley
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
The term "protein requirement" does not suffice any longer for the determination of a well balanced ration, and the term "amino acid requirement" is becoming more standard. Grain and protein feeds vary in their amino acid content and also vary in the availability of the amino acids. When a ration is formulated, the feedstuff amino acid content, amino acid availability and the amino acid requirement of the animal must be considered. These areas, plus amino acid interactions and others, include a broad field and all need extensive clarification. Research has been conducted at several experiment stations to evaluate different protein …
The Influence Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal In Growing-Finishing Swine Rations, R.W. Seerley, R.C. Wahlstrom
The Influence Of Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal In Growing-Finishing Swine Rations, R.W. Seerley, R.C. Wahlstrom
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
In 1958, an experiment was initiated to evaluate the effect of dehydrated alfalfa meal in rations for sows reared in confinement. The results of these trials have been reported earlier and in this series of reports. A part of this experiment was to rear the gilts on alfalfa-free rat ions or with some alfalfa meal in the ration. These gilts were used subsequently in the reproductive trials. In the reproductive phase gilts fed the alfalfa-free ration as growing gilts were fed a ration without alfalfa meal as sows, whereas gilts fed alfalfa were assigned to a treatment group with alfalfa …

Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal In Rations For Confined Sows, R.W. Seerley, R.C. Wahlstrom
South Dakota Swine Field Day Proceedings and Research Reports, 1964
This report is the third in a series of trials to evaluate the addition of dehydrated alfalfa meal in rations for brood sows who have been kept on concrete from birth. The previous trials were reported in the 1962 and 1963 Swine Day Reports. This particular trial was designed to compare 0, 10 an d 20% levels of dehydrated alfalfa meal in the rations and the addition of more protein, minerals and vitamins to a 10% alfalfa ration.
