Control And Elimination Of Quackgrass, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
Quackgrass is one of the most widely spread of the eight noxious weeds in South Dakota. It is particularly prevalent in northern counties, but is found in all parts of the state. It has been reported on over 280,000 acres on more than 14,000 South Dakota farms, but these reports do not include all rangeland infestations.
Sudangrass Studies: Yield, Hcn Value, Nitrate Content, And Grazing Systems, Don T. Winch
Sudangrass Studies: Yield, Hcn Value, Nitrate Content, And Grazing Systems, Don T. Winch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The use of summer annual forage crops to supplement cool season perennial forages for grazing has become popular in the mid-western area of the United States. Sudangrass (Sorghum sudanese (Piper) Stapf.) is one of the most important sources of annual summer feed in this area. With the advent of more vigorous and well adapted varieties and hybrids the use of sundangrass has greatly increased. It produces high yields of good quality forage in a short period of time. Sudangrass makes its best growth during mid-summer when most pasture species are dormant or semi-dormant (14). It will tolerate long periods of …
Supplemental Vitamins In The Drinking Water For Early Weaned Pigs And Growing Rats, Marvin Eugene Wastell
Supplemental Vitamins In The Drinking Water For Early Weaned Pigs And Growing Rats, Marvin Eugene Wastell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vitamins are defined as organic compounds required in small amounts to perform many essential functions in the animal body. All vitamins have different structures and perform different functions. Experimental research has shown that it is very important to supply adequate amounts of vitamins to insure normal growth and body maintenance of animals. Swine producers use completely mixed diets or the free choice feeding of corn and supplement, which includes proteins, minerals, vitamins and additives, as methods of supplying supplemental vitamins for pigs. These two methods have been accepted by modern swine producers as good feeding programs because they have supported …

The Nature And The Influence Of The Work Of The Information And Education Section, South Dakota Department Of Game, Fish And Parks, Edward Riedl
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper deals with a study of an organization whose responsibility is to inform and educate people. This is a study of the program of the Information and Education Section, South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks. There is much confusion connected with the terms “public relations,” “publicity,” and “public information.” Definitions of these terms will result in a better understanding of this study. Emery, Ault and Agee define public relations, “as the planned effort to influence and maintain favorable opinion through acceptable performance, honestly presented, and with reliance on two-way communications.”1 Public relations is also a management function. …
Feedlot Performance Of Heifers As Affected By Spaying And Hormone Treatment, Lowell James Nygaard
Feedlot Performance Of Heifers As Affected By Spaying And Hormone Treatment, Lowell James Nygaard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Thirty-three percent of the animals which comprised the fed slaughter market in 1966 were heifers (U.S.D.S., 1967). When heifers are compared to steers, the gain at a slower rate, require more feed under similar feeding systems and sell at a lower price. These are important economic considerations in view of the large number of heifers fed for slaughter. The meat from heifers has been shown to be equal to that of steers in eating quality. It, however, sells at a lower price because heifer carcasses tend to be fatter and to have more waste as fat trim than steer carcasses …

Fish And Wildlife -- Part Of Your Wealth, Cooperative Extension South Dakota State University
SDSU Extension Fact Sheets
The value of wildlife varies with individuals. Many people enjoy having birds and animals on their land. All farmers benefit to some degree from the "natural regulation" which many birds and mammals have on insects, rodents, and other animal pests. Supplemental income can also be derived from the sale of jackrabbits, muskrats, and other fur-bearers taken from farms and ranches.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1918 the Bureau of Markets, now the Bureau of Agriculture Economics, of the United States Department of Agriculture inaugurated its market reporting service on livestock in Chicago. At that time a uniform standard was set up for market classes and grades of cattle. The use of these uniform descriptions for all classes and grades of cattle throughout the country by researchers, producers, selling and buying agencies and packers has contributed a great deal to the orderly marketing of cattle and to the reporting and exchange of research information. The grade of a particular animal is determined by the apparent …

Isolation Of Anti-Tuberculosis Agent From Korean Soils Containing Decayed Organic Materials, Jong Myong Kim
Isolation Of Anti-Tuberculosis Agent From Korean Soils Containing Decayed Organic Materials, Jong Myong Kim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Tuberculosis is still one of the major threats to the health of mankind. Attempts to find suitable chemotherapeutic agents for tuberculosis date almost from the time that Koch (1, 2, 3) announced the discovery of the etiological agent of this disease. The earlier work has been reviewed by Long (3, 18). The modern chemotherapeutic era, however, began when Rich and Follis (3, 29) demonstrated that sulfa-nilamide exerted a light suppressive effect on the course of experimental tuberculosis in guinea pigs. Since that time, numerous investigators (1, 2, 4-14, 16-18, 29, 36, 39, 41-44) have attempted to find chemotherapeutic agents suitable …
Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar
Nitrate--Urea Interrelationships In Sheep, Donald Wayne Hoar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Nitrates are absorbed from the soil by plants and serve as a source of nitrogen which is converted into protein and other nitrogen containing compounds. Plants usually contain relatively small amounts of nitrate because it is converted into other nitrogenous compounds rapidly after being absorbed. Under certain conditions some plants may accumulate fairly high concentrations of nitrate. While these high concentrations are not toxic to the plant, animals consuming them may sometimes show symptoms of nitrate toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is readily converted into nitrite which causes toxicity. Nitrate is not very toxic, but it is …

The Effects Of Arsenical Compounds On Growth And Enzymes Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, M. L. Halling
The Effects Of Arsenical Compounds On Growth And Enzymes Of Klebsiella Pneumoniae, M. L. Halling
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For many years people have equated arsenic or compounds containing arsenic with poison. Inorganic arsenic compounds are used as chemotherapeutic agents as well as poisons. Organic arsenicals were introduced at the start of this century launching modern chemotherapy. The introduction of antibiotics in the 1940’s virtually replaced organic arsenicals in chemotherapy. Solutions of inorganic arsenic compounds are used as tonics for animals and to finish animals for show. Because arsenicals are excreted by animals in much the same structure as they are consumed and arsenite prevents both putrefaction and growth, it is possible the decomposition of animal excreta will be …
The Effect Of Norethandrolone On The Liver Microsomal Enzyme Which Demethylates Aminopyrine, Garrett John Gross
The Effect Of Norethandrolone On The Liver Microsomal Enzyme Which Demethylates Aminopyrine, Garrett John Gross
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With the introduction of numerous and more complex drugs in medicine annually, the metabolism of drugs by liver microsomal enzymes and factors influencing their metabolism has become a subject of increasing interest. A variety of drugs are metabolized by enzyme systems located in liver microsomes (1). Reactions catalyzed by these enzymes include N-dealkylation, deamination, aromatic hydroxylation, ether cleavage, alkyl chain oxidation, azo link cleavage, sulfoxide formation, and glucuronide formation. The report that 3’-methyl -4- dimethylaminazobenzene, a potent liver carcinogen, did not cause hepatomas in rats when administrated with 3-methylcholanthrene (2) stimulated early investigations to study the effects of various chemical …
The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie
The Ecology Of The Nitrogen-Fixing Azotobacter And Klebsiella In Selected South Dakota Lakes, Paul A. Gillespie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The importance of nitrogen in an aquatic ecosystem is quite well known. Nitrogen, being originally derived from the atmosphere, enters into a complex cycle involving both the plant and animal components of the ecosystem. The nitrogenous compounds of natural waters may be broken down into the main categories according to their source, either allochthones or autochthonous. Allochthones nitrogen is that derived from the outside sources and includes those compounds carried into the lake by precipitation, by surface runoff containing terrestrial nitrogen, or by the inflow of ground water. Autochthonous nitrogenous compounds are those which result from the fixation of elemental …
Porcine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Daniel Harold Gee
Porcine Body Composition As Influenced By Live Weight, Daniel Harold Gee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the controversial issues confronting the swine industry is the correct market weight for hogs. When the market prices look favorable for the future the producer tends to put additional weight on his hogs to obtain a greater total return in terms of dollars and cents. The marketing weight is often dependent up the availability and cost of feed. The area extension worker and nutritionist usually encourage the farmer to market his product at weights which maximize feed efficiency and meat production. Lighter hogs tend to produce faster gain with less feed and produce a leaner, trimmer carcass with …
Supplemental Vitamins In Feed And Water For Growing And Finishing Pigs And Growing Rats, Vernon L. Fritz
Supplemental Vitamins In Feed And Water For Growing And Finishing Pigs And Growing Rats, Vernon L. Fritz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Vitamins in swine diets have become more important in recent years as swine producers have changed to the confinement method of rearing pigs. When confined, swine are more likely to suffer from nutritional deficiencies, especially a deficiency of vitamins. However, with greater knowledge of nutrition and establishment of vitamin requirements, swine producers are now able to include the essential nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals and vitamins) and feed additives in a completely mixed diet. This method of feeding swine has been widely accepted since completely mixed diets support excellent gains and feed utilization; however this method of feeding is not …
The Relationship Of Live And Carcass Measurements To Carcass Meatiness And The Influence Of Sex And Sire On Carcass Traits In Lambs, Robert E. Fritz
The Relationship Of Live And Carcass Measurements To Carcass Meatiness And The Influence Of Sex And Sire On Carcass Traits In Lambs, Robert E. Fritz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The changing demands of the consumer have caused quite an influence on our breeding, feeding and management programs. The consumer is better educated and spends more time selecting which cut or cuts of meat to buy. The desire of the consumer to purchase leaner cuts and cuts with more eye appeal has influenced producers to select parent stock with more desirable meat qualities, and animal scientists to strive to find measures which producers could use in their selection programs in order to produce more red meat and less fat. The popularity of other meats has increased and the per capita …

The Effect Of Range Site And Range Condition On The Growth And Development Of Western Wheatgrass, Myron Eugene Enevoldsen
The Effect Of Range Site And Range Condition On The Growth And Development Of Western Wheatgrass, Myron Eugene Enevoldsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
One of the problems confronting the range administrator or ranch manager in making sound grazing management decisions is lack of detailed knowledge about the growth and development of herbage grasses. It is important to know how the desirable grass species in a particular area will respond to the time and frequency of harvesting in order to formulate a grazing management plan that will permit maximum sustained livestock production while maintaining or improving the species composition and the vigor of the important forage plants. Taller and more palatable grasses are replaced by shorter grasses as grazing intensity is increased; thus, foliage …

Effects Of Supplemental Lysine And Methionine In Finishing Swine Diets, Bruce A. Eason
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Considerable research has been conducted in the last few years to evaluate protein and amino acid levels in the various growth phases of porcine animals. Most of this research has been limited to the baby and growing phase of the pig, whereas little research has been conducted with the finishing phase of the pig. Lysine and methionine, essential amino acids in the diet of monogastric animals, have been studied extensively in animal nutrition. The following experiments were designed to gain some insight into the effects of supplementing two crystalline amino acids, lysine and methionine, to a corn-soybean meal-tankage diet for …

Effect Of Thiamine, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, And Niacin In Bovine Blood On The Economy Of The Short-Nosed Cattle Louse Haematopinus Eurysternus (Nitzsch), John Roger Crouch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A livestock producer will usually experience a louse infestation among his cattle sometime during his career. Most of the cattle that become louse-infested are easily ridded of their lice. There may be, however, one animal in a herd which is particularly susceptible to the lice and becomes chronically infested. Sometimes the susceptible animal may become so heavily infested with lice that death occurs. Scharff (1962) stated that the death loss resulting from very heavy infestations of the short-nosed cattle louse, Hematopinus eurysternus (Nitzsch) was probably about one percent. The louse involve in the experiment was the short-nosed cattle louse, Hematopinus …

The Concept Of The Flapper In The Early Writings Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Janet Foster Carroll
The Concept Of The Flapper In The Early Writings Of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Janet Foster Carroll
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A curious, but important, relationship exists between the social history of a particular age and the imaginative literature of the same period. The writings in both areas become major sources of knowledge about that era for readers in future generations. The following thesis is the outgrowth, in part, of this interest – an examination of the concept of the flapper in the early works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. For years Fitzgerald has been regarded as the chronicler of his Age. As early as 1920 he was heralded by the public as “Spokesman for the Younger Generation,” and although he seems …
